Stargate Atlantis - SciFi and TV Talk's Blog: Jason Momoa Interview

Jason Momoa - At Home On Atlantis

By scifiandtvtalk

Some people say it’s the clothes that make the man. In the case of actor Jason Momoa, his dreadlocks are what first come to mind when you think of his Stargate Atlantis alter ego of Ronon Dex. After seven years, he was longing to shed his dreads, especially after they started to become a pain in the neck, quite literally. Unfortunately, because of his work on Atlantis, that was not an option, so a compromise was struck. The actor had his hair cut, but that meant wearing a wig as Ronon, which still had its drawbacks.

A brief excerpt:
“When it comes to the acting, I’ve learned a great deal on Atlantis. I get really nervous on-camera, so I’ve tried to relax and slow down. This season I’ve had the chance to go much deeper into this character and really experiment with him. Broken Ties was a huge breakthrough for me, especially when it came to the scenes where I cried. I find it very difficult to cry, and as an actor you have to look inside yourself as much as possible and be aware of your emotions. Thank God I got to work with [director] Ken Girotti on Broken Ties, who’s incredible. He got me to relax and would say to me, ‘You know you can do this.’ When you’re on-set and, for example, the lighting people are doing their thing, the camera guys are moving the camera into place, and someone from make-up is powdering your face, it’s hard to channel your emotions. It takes a lot of practice, and I’m not good at getting all emotional and crying. Ken just came up to me and said, ‘Jason, you know what you want to do. You’re there, just relax.'"

Exclusive Interview: Jason Momoa

Actor not as stoic as his 'Atlantis' character

By Blaine Kyllo | Monday, August 11, 2008

Like Ronon Dex, the character he plays on Stargate Atlantis, Jason Momoa is tall, muscular, and imposing. Unlike the stoic Ronon, however, Momoa is loud, boisterous, and larger than life. He’s the kind of actor that makes sure people know when he’s entered the room, and when he takes to the Daedalus set where interviews with press are being conducted, his voice booms through the hallways.

The day before we saw Momoa in his car, a ’50s-era pink Cadillac he purchased in Santa Barbara and drove to Vancouver in a winding road trio. “She’s called Lulu. Honolulu. Did a road trip, Keroac-style, me and a buddy. Got lost. And found Vancouver. Destination: Vancouver. Windy roads. No heater. We froze our asses off.”

A brief excerpt:

CinemaSpy: Both [stunt coordinator] James Bamford and [costume designer] Val Halverson mentioned how involved you are in idea generation for your character. Talk about that.
Jason Momoa: I’m very involved because to me, my process starts with whatever sparks in my head, my imagination of what this character’s going to be. Then, when I get to set, when I first got here, it was so amazing what these women did with my wardrobe. But it starts for me with the wardrobe. Just like stepping into the character. Val, I would think, is annoyed by me because I’m constantly in there about wardrobe. That’s my passion; I’ve got to constantly be creative. There’s always an outlet there for me, whether I’m doing my art or writing or just having an idea. With that shop down there, they can make, distress, build anything, and Ronon is that guy. He’s always been on the run and he makes his clothes and he’s got these imperfections and it wears the scars of him running. He’s like, “I’ve bled in these. This is my home.” That’s what it is, his boots and his clothes. That’s what he’s carried. To me that was very important, wardrobe.

Blood and Tears

GateWorld talks with Jason Momoa

Casual viewers of Stargate Atlantis may see Ronon Dex as "the muscle," who says little and is always ready for a fight. While that much is true, fans who have come to know the character over the years know that he also has lots of heart.

This spring GateWorld's editors paid a visit to actor Jason Momoa, always kicking back in between takes on the set of Stargate Atlantis with his guitar. We caught up on his physical battles, and learned that the pre-season cutting off of his heavy dreadlocks was only the beginning of his trials. Jason talks about shooting the upcoming season, most notably the Ronon-heavy episode "Broken Ties." Finally, he tells us how he feels about Ronon's new romantic possibility.

Season Five of Stargate Atlantis premieres Friday, July 11 on SCI FI Channel in the U.S.

A brief excerpt:

GW: Tell us a little bit about "Broken Ties."

JM: It's awesome! It's probably the best episode -- the hardest thing as an actor [for me] to do. Because even though not a lot is scripted, for Ronon there's not a lot of dialogue. It's his looks and a lot of pain that he goes through. Just a lot of pain.

The fight was great. We worked really hard on it. I almost feel sorry for Mark Dacascos ["Tyre"]. He's great to work with. We have really good chemistry together. I feel bad for him because we spent four days training with it, and two and a half hours of shooting. So we kind of got screwed on the whole fight. And the fight in my opinion came out really crappy.

Jason Momoa: Dex appeal

Hawaiian actor Jason Momoa appeared in lifeguard drama Baywatch before landing the role of Satedan warrior Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis. With the fourth season about to be released on DVD, Momoa spoke to Bryan Cairns about fighting and leaving his shirt on.

**snippage**

As the big muscle on the show, do you have to work hard to keep that physique?

JM: "No, it is too hard. Before the season starts, what I try to do is climb, get in shape, and ride a bike. Once we start rolling, everything dissipates so by the end of the year, I am all ugggh. Until they come in and say, “Ummm, you are supposed to be the bulk of the show!” - then I would go to the gym…It is a good thing I don’t have to take my shirt off. I am so excited to wear clothes. I hate taking my shirt off [laughs]"

Stargate Atlantis: Series 4 Vol. 1 is released on region 2 DVD on 2 June 2008, and Region 1 DVD box set on July 8 2008.
