Q&A with Atlantis showrunner Joe Mallozzi

It was announced a little over a week ago that The SCI FI Channel chose not to renew Stargate Atlantis for a sixth season. At least one TV movie based on the series will go into the early stages of development and another franchise series will be born: Stargate Universe. Fans aren't happy, but that's pretty much par for the course for any series.

After GateWorld interviewed series co-creator and all-around Stargate guru Brad Wright, and with some questions I think still unanswered, I thought it would be enlightening to bring in one half of the duo responsible for the day-to-day production of Atlantis, Joe Mallozzi.

Paul Tenny: It seemed like the decision not to split the 5th season of Atlantis in two was actually a good sign for the show. Do you know if that was in any way related to the cancellation, or why that decision was made?

Joe Mallozzi: I don't believe it was cancellation-related. In fact, when we heard we would be running straight through, we took this as a very good sign as it would allow the ratings to build, unimpeded, over the course of an entire season. Nothing cools off a hot show like a two or three month break...

Stargate Week: Search & Rescue

Put simply, I loved this episode.

You will not be disappointed this year if the premier is any indication of how the entire season will turn out, and I've no doubt that if they continue hitting their marks just as they've done with Search & Rescue that a sixth season will be ordered. That doesn't mean that it's going to come free, though. If you want it as a fan, your job is to watch it on TV instead of on your computer and to introduce your friends and family to the show if you can.

The more people that watch this show, the better.

It really deserves it.

Stargate Atlantis week

I hope everyone had a good weekend and that a lot of you are looking forward to the 5th season premier of Stargate Atlantis this coming Friday. I've got a week full of SGA stuff planned out and I figure this post would be a good place to keep track of it all (for you) as we progress throughout the week.

I've had Stargate on my mind for much of the past week, ever since the Scifi Channel sent me a press kit for the fifth season of Atlantis. I've been throwing together some ideas of how I want to approach my early review, from touching on the good times and the few rough times from season four, where the series has gone since its inception, where the franchise is with the movies and what not. Exec-prod Joe Mallozzi (who got me that press-kit, thank you sir) reminded us that no show lasts forever.

It turns out the truly good people in this world don't either, and that's unbelievably sad.

With the past in mind and new things coming later this month, the future of the Stargate franchise is very bright, but on Sunday some of that brightness was stolen from us with the passing of Don S. Davis.

I've been hoarding some Stargate links for a while, mostly meaning to read them myself but with the intention of sharing them once the pile got big enough. Here it is, interviews, stories, and probably a fair amount of spoilers for the new fifth season of Atlantis and Stargate: Continuum.

There's also a few things from Battlestar Galactica thrown in for flavor, if that's your thing.

Martin Wood talks Sanctuary, Canadian productions

If you've heard about Sanctuary then you'll probably dig this, and if not, it's still worth noting because I think this represents the very beginning of a new digital development platform for television. Note that I said development and not distribution, because I'm of the mind that the Internet can't possibly replace cable or satellite distribution -- physically incapable of it -- meaning it'll make a good proving ground for trying things out, but not much more than that. Sanctuary is a show that like Quarterlife was produced by veteran TV producers and writers, self-financed, broadcast initially on the 'net without much success, but garnered enough attention where it counts to make the leap to broadcast television.

For Wood, this is less about developing shows on the 'net before moving to traditional distribution channels, and more about developing successful shows that are entirely Canadian productions. Stargate for example only features one WGA writer (the rest are WGC -- Writers Guild of Canada) and only three SAG actors amongst the main cast. The studios where the show is filmed are in Canada -- which is not to be confused with the studio that owns the show, MGM, which is based in the United States -- and all post production and effects are done locally. I know a lot of Canadian writers that desperately want their government to invest more money in local productions instead of acting as outsourced talent for American industry, and Wood sees this as progress in that direction.
