Continuum Made Character Suffer

The upcoming straight-to-DVD movie Stargate: Continuum, based on SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate SG-1, gave producers a chance to wreak havoc on a main character to serve the exigencies of the film's location shooting.

(Major spoilers at the link above!)

"I had to finish the Arctic scenes first, before we started to shoot [Stargate: The] Ark of Truth," Wright said in an interview in Vancouver, Canada, last week. "It was kind of weird. We shot all the Arctic scenes, and then took a long, long break, shot another movie and then did Continuum."

"There's a nobility of the character, and that's fun to do in a time-travel story, because you know you can get away with it, and it will be OK," Wright said. He added with a nasty grin: "What I did to O'Neill [Richard Dean Anderson] was pretty harsh, too." Stargate: Continuum drops on DVD and Blu-Ray on July 29. --John Sullivan

SAM NEILL ('THE TUDORS,' 'JURASSIC PARK'), SEAN BEAN ('THE LORD OF THE RINGS') AND JOSS ACKLAND ('LETHAL WEAPON 2') TO JOIN THE CAST OF NBC'S NEW FALL ADVENTURE DRAMA SERIES 'CRUSOE'

Published: May 22, 2008

Stars to Join Philip Winchester ('Thunderbirds') and Anna Walton ('Hell Boy: the Golden Army') Previously Announced for Classic Series

BURBANK, Calif. - May 22, 2008 - NBC announced that Sam Neill ("The Tudors," "Jurassic Park"), Sean Bean ("The Lord of the Rings") and Joss Ackland ("Lethal Weapon 2") will join the cast of NBC's new landmark series, "Crusoe" an epic and ambitious take on Daniel Defoe's legendary tale.

Sean Bean

"Crusoe" finds the dashing and resourceful Crusoe (Philip Winchester, "Thunderbirds") after many years of being a castaway on a desert island with his companion Friday (casting to follow). Written by Stephen Gallagher ("Eleventh Hour") and directed by Duane Clark ("CSI: NY"), "Crusoe" follows the adventures of the two island dwellers while looking in flashback at Crusoe's life before he was thrown into an isolated existence filled with danger and adventure.

Among those are his tragic childhood with widower father James (Bean), the blossoming relationship with the love of his life, Susannah (Walton) and his endeavor to transform entrepreneurial aspirations into a business empire under the watchful eye of family friend, Jeremiah Blackthorn (Neill). Overcoming marauding militias, hungry cannibals, wild cats, starvation and apocalyptic lightning storms on his seemingly idyllic island, Crusoe dreams of the day he will be reunited with his beloved family.

Sam Neill

Due to film in the United Kingdom, South Africa and the Seychelles, "Crusoe" is a distinctive, dramatic and daring story, laced with humor and plenty of high-octane action.

...Well, I’m pleased to report I’ve finally completed a very rough beat sheet for Remnants, formerly a “very special Stargate: Atlantis”, now a “not so special Stargate: Atlantis”. However, I’m sure that once the other writers weigh in with their brilliant ideas, it’ll go from “not so special” to “one of passing interest”. So far, I’ve got the word out to a couple of potential guest stars, discussed the look of the mainland, and have been considering some of the more important character moments I want to explore with Sheppard, McKay, and Woolsey.

Dropped by the FX Stage where David Hewlett and Michael Shanks were doing their thing. According to Marty G. who is directing 2nd unit, they’re both in crazy-good moods and their scenes are going swimmingly.

I was back in the editing suite this afternoon working on Whispers after receiving notes from my fellow producers, the network, and the studio. Once I’d made the required cuts and trims, the episode was thirty seconds short. Hunh. If you’ll recall, it took me approximately two hours to get it to time when it was thirty-five seconds long. I wish it were as easy as simply adding that time back in but, alas, we had to go through the episode again, scene by scene, adding Sheppard’s warning here, putting back Mirellus’s exit there. Finally, we’re to time and, following a brief conversation with the uber-talented Joel Goldsmith about the score, I am done. For now.

Today’s pic: Remember the old Marvel Team-Up where Spiderman would partner with another superhero to take down the villain of the month? It was always interesting to see who the webhead would team up with. Sometimes, it would be someone really cool like Wolverine or The Punisher. Other times, it would be someone somewhat less cool like, say, Frog-man. Well, consider today’s pic the Atlantis equivalent of the old Marvel Team-Up, and a definite Spidey-Wolverine combo.

Interview with David Winning

Stargate-Planet, May 2008

David Winning was a director of Stargate Atlantis' first season episodes. We're grateful that he's willing to answer a few career related questions for our German website visitors.

S-P.de: Your Atlantis episode "Childhood's End" won three awards for "Best direction". What do think does make this episode and your direction special?

DW: "Childhood's End ultimately is a story about compassion and understanding. Sheppard and his team crashland on a planet where the inhabitants are all children; no one lives past the age of 25. Our heroes soon learn the disturbing reason. The series presents some interesting dilemmas and political choices for the fans; how much interference is too much in a new culture -- and what is the real purpose of the SG teams exploration. I loved working with the kids obviously, that was a major fun part of the show. Cleo and Casta played by Jessica Amlee and Sam Charles were both amazing and pretty experienced for their age. But I think the most challenging part was just creating this whole forest village that the kids lived in. With amazing support from a great effects team (to add the actual treehouses) and also the art direction and set decoration was incredible. That village went on forever; just wish we'd had the time to shoot it completely and show it off. Perhaps the movie version. I think it's always fun to be in on the ground floor of a series because everyone was finding their way. Childhood was such an early episode for Atlantis, that it was fascinating watching the characters being formed by a talented cast. I really liked playing with the tension in the group as Aries starts to get more manic and defensive. There developed sort of an evil quality to the villagers amidst the innocence of youth. Episode trivia: Three scenes were removed; both just for time. I tend to overshoot stuff so quite often because of the confines of episodic some material will have to go. I'm remembering one scene involved Teyla questioning a pregnant villager about the origins of the sacrifice – just a short scene that I liked but it got trimmed. Also the team's arrival in the forest village was a long steadicam tracking shot through the winding path of the village and showing all the kids coming out of hiding to greet the group. Sad to see this go as it really showed off the expanse of the encampment. In the present cut the group just arrives at the shrine as the rope ladder is thrown down. Also a short argument scene between Keras and Aries in the treehouse, just before they confer with the team about their decision."
