Supernatural - Hot Cuppa TV: Jim Beaver Interview

Jim Beaver Left 'Deadwood' to Explore the 'Supernatural' and 'Harper's Island'

May 07, 2009

Fans of "Deadwood," David Milch's groundbreaking Western series for HBO, know Jim Beaver as Ellsworth, the irascible yet gentlemanly -- in his own profane way, like many folks on the show -- gold prospector who came to an unfortunate end, witnessed by his dog.

But Ellsworth's demise did nothing to slow down Beaver's career, as he can be seen concurrently as demon-hunter Bobby Singer on The CW's "Supernatural," airing Thursdays (the season finale airs next week); and as Sheriff Charlie Mills on the CBS mystery/drama limited series "Harper's Island," airing Saturdays (which, incidentally, also stars Katie Cassidy, who used to play the demon Ruby on "Supernatural" -- not to be confused with Irish actress Elaine Cassidy, who plays Mills' daughter on "Harper's Island).

He's also a screenwriter, a playwright and an author, with a new memoir, "Life's That Way." It's based on a series of e-mails that chronicles Beaver's efforts to deal with his wife Cecily's cancer diagnosis and death, and being a now-single father to their autistic daughter, Maddie.

Born in Wyoming as the son of a minister, Beaver spent much of his childhood and adolesence in Texas. He also volunteered for the Marine Corps and was active in the Marine Reserve until 1976. His acting career involves stage, film and television (including writing episodes for such TV shows as "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Tour of Duty").

Since Beaver is a writer, I asked him to pen some answers to questions, which are below. Enjoy.

A brief excerpt:

Q: What’s your relationship like with show stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles? A trio of Texans!
A: I don’t have the same relationship with Jared and Jensen that Bobby has with Sam and Dean. We’re much more on an even level, as far as I’m concerned. There’s no sense that I’m older and wiser, like there is with Bobby, no sense that Jim ever needs to straighten the two youngsters out like there sometimes is with Bobby. We’re three friends and colleagues, and I think there’s a lot of mutual respect that goes along with the friendship. If anything, I come to them for advice. It’s great being a trio of Texans, since it gives us all kind of that feeling of knowing the “secret handshake,” you know?

Alex O'Loughlin Emerges From the 'Moonlight' to Take on 'Criminal Minds'

WARNING: As well-read as he may be, O'Loughlin is a man's man and an Aussie, and the following audio interview contains a few instances of profanity. I'm not technically proficient enough to bleep them, so consider this fair warning to send those of tender age or sensibilities out of the room before hitting the play button -- or just wear headphones.

Among other things, O'Loughlin is discussing his guest role on CBS' "Criminal Minds," executive-produced by feature-film producer Mark Gordon ("Grey's Anatomy"), former Chicago police officer Edward Allen Bernero ("Third Watch"), Deborah Spera, Chris Mundy and O'Loughlin's good friend, Simon Mirren ("Third Watch," "Without a Trace").

Breaking: Spock (aka Leonard Nimoy) cast as 'Fringe's' William Bell

By Korbi Ghosh

April 08, 2009

UPDATE: FOX has confirmed to me that Nimoy has indeed been cast as William Bell

If FOX is worried about the ratings for "Fringe" -- which fared okay in its return last night, though lead in "American Idol" definitely pumped its numbers up -- Mr. Spock may soon be providing the network with a bit of relief.

Trekkies not already watching "Fringe" will likely rethink that decision come next month when, according to http://fringetelevision.com, "Star Trek" legend Leonard Nimoy will join the show as William Bell, the founder of Massive Dynamic and Walter's Harvard lab partner from back in the day...

President Roslin Speaks -- Q&A With 'Battlestar Galactica's' Mary McDonnell

February 23, 2009

With only a few episodes left of Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," airing Fridays, fans will soon know the ultimate fates of all the characters -- and one of the most interesting is likely to be that of President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell).

Simultaneously battling breast cancer, leading her people on a flight across space from implacable enemies and acting as an agent of religious prophecy -- and, of late, carrying on a torrid, possibly doomed, romance with Adm. William Adama (Edward James Olmos) -- Roslin is the textbook definition of a well-rounded character.

McDonnell was gracious enough to answer some email questions about the show and her character. Enjoy.

A brief excerpt:

Q: There are not many TV romances between mature people. Roslin and Adama – what have you enjoyed most about playing this relationship?
A: One of the reasons that I enjoyed Adama/ Roslin so very much was the utter compatibility between Eddie and myself. There was never really a question of how do we do this. Sometimes you get lucky in your work. Ed and I had an instant and deep respect for each other that naturally grew into a fondness. I think that is what mature relationships are made of.

They are completely authentic and earned through an experience of other as partner and soul mate. The audience (both the younger and more mature) LOVED this relationship because it created hope and because it was based on total acceptance of the other person regardless of differences.

Battlestar Galactica - Zap2It: Kate Vernon Interview

At Zap2It:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh)

'Battlestar Galactica's' Final Cylon Is Back This Friday... & She's Talking.

Korbi Ghosh on February 12

When it was revealed last month that Ellen Tigh was Battlestar Galactica's final Cylon, the fan reaction was decidedly mixed. Understandably so. The character had been dead since season three and some viewers felt the last Cylon should be a more prominent player. However, now that we know Ellen is the one, it puts a few of her past actions into perspective, and yet raises several questions at the same time. KTV reporter Marisa Roffman chatted with Kate Vernon -- who comes back to the show tomorrow night -- to get her take on her character's big reveal, how long she's known about it, how long Ellen's known and why, at one point, she thought she'd burned her bridge with Battlestar...

A brief excerpt:

Fans first suspected Ellen might be a Cylon when Tigh started seeing visions of her while interrogating Six. Was that foreshadowing or was he just feeling guilty about his role in Ellen’s death?
I think it’s both. Saul and Ellen have an ancient relationship now. Now that everyone knows who we are, it’s clear that these two people have been connected and involved and married for thousands of years. And they’re very much a part of each other. So for him to mix with another female that is blonde and blue eyed and tall, it was like an overlay of his tremendous guilt for poisoning the woman that he truly loves and who he truly wants. I think it was part of his grieving process. When someone you love dies, you try and let them go and move on with your life, but you can’t help but have this weird holographic memory of your past lover.

Dollhouse - Zap2It: Tahmoh Penikett Interview

At Zap2It:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

'Dollhouse' Week: An interview with Tahmoh Penikett

Welcome to Dollhouse Week. Over the next few days we'll feature a variety of posts about Joss Whedon's new FOX series, which stars Eliza Dushku as a young "doll," someone who can be implanted with any personality or skill set and hired out for missions, only to have her memory wiped and returned to a childlike state when the task is done. First up: Tahmoh Penikett, who plays an FBI agent investigating the highly illegal and seemingly mythical Dollhouse.

... Have there been any big surprises as you've gotten to know your character better?
Not huge surprises, but it's interesting thinking about the direction I got from Joss in some of the first episodes -- I was a little confused. But it's funny, coming full circle six episodes later, I completely understand why. The man's juggling a lot of things -- I'm obviously not privy to the long storyline, and he didn't always have the opportunity to share all that with me. But it was good to kind of question some of the directions and choices he was making for my character in the very beginning and seeing it make sense some episodes later.

Helo speaks: Chatting with 'Battlestar Galactica's' Tahmoh Penikett

By Rick Porter

January 15 '09

Tahmoh Penikett plays the stoic Helo on Battlestar Galactica, and as such he's not going to give away many specifics about the show's final episodes. (Nor, frankly, would I deign to ask, because he's a big guy.)

Penikett, however, was more than willing to discuss more general things about the final Battlestar arc, which starts Friday on Sci Fi. The actor, who also stars in FOX's upcoming Dollhouse (we'll have more on that as the show gets closer to air), says more than once that the story will "blow people away."

We discussed his thoughts on the show coming to an end, where Helo's head is now that the fleet has found Earth and one not very big spoiler. Here's what he had to say:

A brief excerpt:

Helo has always been the good soldier. How's he dealing with getting to Earth and finding it so devastated?
I think it's probably as hard on him as on a lot of people, but the thing about Helo -- so much was riding on this ... this was the last hope. Everything was about this, it was about discovering Earth. To come and discover it's been nuked, and whatever is left is ... pretty much uninhabitable and it's not what they were hoping, it would break a lot of people -- and it does. You discover that it will break more than a few people.

But ultimately, he's a father. He's a father and a husband, and that's his mission. He has to mourn like everyone else, but really what it comes down to is he's got a daughter to take care of and a wife to take care of. They're still alive and there's still hope, as little as it is.

Teyla Emmagan from ‘Stargate Atlantis’

By Michael Korb

October 28

When you’re the queen of a now primitive but once technologically advanced community traveling across galaxies in a spaceship full of human explorers, dressing for the occasion can be a challenge. There’s not exactly a Gap in outer space (well, there might be; it’s difficult to know for sure). But for Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell) of Stargate Atlantis, airing Fridays on Sci-Fi Channel, her ace in the hole is costume designer Valerie Halverson.
“Teyla was the leader of her people – the Athosians – but she has come onto Atlantis to help guide them,” says Halverson, who designs everything for the series. “We tried to get her looking more like a team member, so we gave her a sleeker, sexier uniform, but also wanted to keep an elegance about her. After all, she is a queen. I’ve always tried to convey that. She’s a regal hunter...”

TV Review: 'Sanctuary'

By Hanh Nguyen

October 01, 09:52 PM

Like the beings offered a safe haven in Sanctuary, Sci Fi Channel's latest original series has yet to establish what it is before it can truly be comfortable in its skin and accepted on its own terms. In trying to be too many things at once, the show relies on cliches and loses the ability to actually entertain...

**snippage**

Overall, Sanctuary should fill the viewer with a sense of wonder, but it's all too familiar, from the ragtag group of people with an unusual mission to the cliched mansion/lab/zoo where all are housed. The secrets the characters harbor fail to intrigue, the fight scenes are cheesy instead of stimulating and the odd creatures neither frighten nor fascinate. Worst of all, the show lacks the oomph and sense of fun of shows like Doctor Who or even its spin-off Torchwood.

Sanctuary is by no means a bad show, but it does feel like it's trying so hard that it never settles on a single voice or vision. But as Helen says, "Sanctuary for all is not just an empty motto," and the show certainly deserves a chance to prove its potential.

Sanctuary comes home on Sci Fi beginning Friday, Oct. 3. Also, check out Zap2it's Sanctuary photos.

What's your take on the show? Was I too harsh? Could it replace any of your favorite sci fi shows?

Birimbau, Angela's Breakup & Her New Love: 'Bones' Michaela Conlin Comes Clean

By Korbi Ghosh - September 09

A week ago, Bones' Angela and Hodgins were happily engaged. But after last Wednesday's season premiere, they're going their separate ways. So, what's to come? Michaela Conlin was kind enough to fill me in...

A brief excerpt:

Are there any interesting cases coming up that stand out?
MC: "Angela's ex-girlfriend is actually sort of embroiled in a case which is pretty interesting. But they've all been good so far. There are all these revolving interns that have been coming in [to fill] Zack's position and they've been really fun. We've had Michael Badalucco from The Practice, Carla Gallo from Undeclared. Great people. But as far as major cases go, no, not yet. Gormagon was a big thing and I think we're all recovering from that."

Burn Notice - Zap2It: Review of 'Bad Blood'

At Zap2It:

(Please follow the link for the complete review.)

'Burn Notice': Meet Michael's mini-me

By Sarah Jersild

August 14, 09:34 PM

Burn Notice is normally compelling enough to make me ignore any elements that might cause disbelief. Big guns? Huge explosions? A constant array of family friends who need help? Michael's infinite skillset? I can buy that. But Michael's Mayor Quimby-gets-brain-damage Baaaahstahn accent? Oh, hell no.

This spoiler can never have enough shoes.

There's a new bad-ass in town -- Victor [Stargate SG-1's Michael Shanks], one of Carla's cohorts, is brought in to bring Michael to heel. Victor's into firearms and killing and the potential destruction of everyone Michael holds dear. He gives Michael a cunning bedazzled cell phone (pretty!) and tells Michael he is now officially at Victor's beck and call...

...Meanwhile, Victor summons Michael to play driver for a heist, but he won't tell Michael what they're stealing and why. Fortunately, Michael has improvisational x-ray skills, and, along with making things go boom, he manages to get a picture of the mysterious item. No, it's not a Stargate (dammit!) -- it's a sniper rifle. Huh. Why steal such a thing? And why didn't the Evil Spy Overlords want Michael to know about it?

Highlights, thoughts and odds and ends

* What did you think of Victor? I think he's appealingly unhinged, but I don't know if I buy him as a bigger bad-ass than Michael himself. I did like the note around the GPS in the phone, though.

* Victor's crazy came out the most, I think, when he accepted that Michael would be cowed enough to not want to see what's in the box. Or maybe they figured Michael would figure out how to see into the box, an the sniper rifle hides something else. Or maybe Michael knows that they know, and he... my head hurts...

Michael's spy bits

* Fire alarms are passe. No one pays attention unless they, themselves, have burst into flames. A bomb threat on the building next door gets people out of the building you're targeting and has them concentrating on another place. Plus, modern bomb squads use RF jammers that block potential bomb triggers, cell phones and wireless security camera...

Sanctuary - Zap2It: Fall TV Premieres

From Zap2It:

Sanctuary - Sci Fi

Premieres: Friday, Oct. 3
Airs: Fridays at 10 p.m.

Stars: Amanda Tapping, Emilie Ullerup, Robin Dunne

What's It All About? Amanda Tapping stars as Dr. Helen Magnus, a 157-year-old "terrologist," one who studies monsters. Along with her team, she befriends creatures that have evolved from mankind and gives them a safe haven in which to live. Of course, not all monsters want a sanctuary, and the most dangerous need to be disposed of. The series is shot extensively on green screen -- like the movie "Sin City" -- allowing creators to immerse their characters in imaginary and detailed worlds. A prequel of sorts aired in a number of short webisodes (still available at YouTube.com). Though these had the same cast and concept, creator Damian Kindler ("Stargate") promises the TV series will have more humor -- something notably lacking in the webisodes -— as well as brighter sets and more backstory for the main characters. Kindler calls it a "reboot of the concept" and adds, "It's brand-new and different and reimagined and in a really cool way, so we're excited to see how the people that saw the first iteration react to the even bigger, shinier version."

~~**~~**

NOTE: Sanctuary's premiere is Oct. 3 and begins at 9pm as it is a two-hour premiere. The following week, on October 10, Stargate Atlantis moves to 9pm and Sanctuary takes the 10pm time slot on the SciFi Channel (US).

'Stargate: Continuum' Cast Recall Being On Ice

By Kate O'Hare, Zap2it.com

July 29, 2008

On Monday, July 21, now-brunette "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate: Atlantis" star Amanda Tapping appeared in Beverly Hills, Calif., at the Television Critics Association Press Tour to promote her new Sci Fi Channel series "Sanctuary."

But in May of 2007, Tapping was still a blonde and still hard at work in Vancouver, Canada, playing Air Force Col. Samantha Carter in "Stargate Atlantis" and two "Stargate SG-1" movies, "Ark of Truth" and "Continuum."

"Ark of Truth" was designed to wrap up storylines from the end of the show's 10th season, but "Continuum," due out Tuesday, July 29, on DVD, represents the first stand-alone movie based on the long-running TV franchise (started on Showtime and continued on Sci Fi Channel), itself based on the 1994 movie "Stargate."

And, speaking to crowds on Friday, July 25, at Comic-Con International in San Diego ("Continuum" premiered in San Diego on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Midway on July 24), executive producer Brad Wright hinted that more movies might be on the way...

'Battlestar Galactica' President Mary McDonnell Talks Laura Roslin, Lee, Adama and More

By Korbi Ghosh

June 16, 11:48 AM

After seeing Battlestar Galactica's epic mid-season finale last week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mary McDonnell (pictured left) to discuss her character's presidency, her relationships and how she, as an actor, sees the overall story. She also gave up a tease or two about what we can expect when the show returns to finish its run. Read on...

A brief excerpt:

**snippage**

One of my favorite moments was the scene between you and Jamie Bamber, during which Laura gives Lee her approval. The two have butted heads all season, but now, Laura seems to appreciate his abilities as a leader.

Well, I think she's known since the beginning. If you look back, there's a scene on Colonial One, where she recognizes that he's the one. All along, in her mind she's been thinking about how to keep an eye on him and gage if he's prepared [for the presidency]. So even in his opposition to her, she gets it. She just wants him out of the way so she can finish her agenda. But there's a part of her that's [proud of him]. That's her subtext, anyway. We don't necessarily talk about it. But that's why we had that moment [in the mid-season finale], because the discussion behind-the-scenes was sort of like this. [Executive producer] Ron Moore always knew how Laura and I, Mary, saw Lee. And the writing staff, they started tweaking [Lee and Laura's relationship] very subtly in this episode. But to play the antagonism between them has been really cool, because you know she still goes home and says, yeah, he's the one. He's got all the stuff, the sizzle and the drive and he can take it the next step. That's what she's concerned about.

Two Presidents, A Secret Cylon & Starbuck: 'Battlestar Galactica's' Jamie Bamber Speaks

By Korbi Ghosh

June 05, 04:01 PM

Maybe it's commonplace in the U.K. -- I don't know -- but in my experience, guys as attractive as Battlestar Galactica's Jamie Bamber aren't usually all smart and introspective too. However, instead of the boring personality that so many men of his beauty are saddled with, God gifted Bamber with both hands. A speaker of three languages, the two of us chose to chat in English today (a random decision and not at all because I have no understanding of French or Italian) about all things Lee Adama. If you're a lover of the series, this is a conversation (long, but I swear, worth it) you want to get in on...

**snippage**

Very interesting, because we actually have seen a different side of Lee as of late. He's resorted to a couple dirty trickster ways, talking to Tom Zarek behind President Roslin's back. Do you feel like he's lost some of his idealistic, moral center?

No, I absolutely don’t. I think Lee has always been someone who wants to contribute. He believes in sacrifices, he believes in service, he believes in helping those around him. I think what he sees in the beginning of season four is a vertical framework that is antiquated and does not fit this sort of fledgling society. The Presidency was a huge office back on Caprica and then it was like the United States presidency suddenly boiled down to the one state of New Hampshire. Is there room for two Houses and a judiciary and all this stuff when you have just one state? The answer is probably no. And I think what Lee sees with Roslin is that she’s someone he admires very much, but she’s been on a torturous journey as the president, personally and politically. She’s lost touch with the civilian voice, she’s become very cozy with Admiral Adama and they've become kind of a de facto autocracy. And I think Lee understands that it’s necessary and probably the right way to govern, but what he feels is that they could do a better job of at least having the illusion of being accountable to the rest of the fleet. So I think he starts off trying to help the President, trying to bring a new, fresh, young sort of face to this leadership, and one that could maybe involve the people, giving them some sort of voice. And then he realizes she’s very much set [in her ways] and she views him as a threat post-trial, and he decides that this isn’t the right way to do things. I think he’s still being the same Lee. He’s got a vision and he’s an idealist, but he’s not afraid [to make moves]. As I'm sure, if you were with Barack Obama in the back rooms and if you were really talking to him as part of his team, he would bare his teeth. He’s got to be ambitious. He’s got to be single-minded and he’s got to tread on some fingers sometimes. Lee’s no different.

The Long Goodbye of 'Battlestar Galactica'

By Kate O'Hare, Zap2it

March 28, 2008

By now, it should all have been over for Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica" -- filming wrapped, cast and crew scattered, episodes working their way through the post-production process.

But thanks to a three-month shutdown for the Writers Guild of America strike, this week instead marks the beginning of filming for the final group of episodes in the fourth and last season of "Galactica."

"It's still the last season," star Katee Sackhoff says. "It's just taking a lot longer to shoot the dang thing than we thought it would."

On Friday, March 28, Sci Fi airs two half-hour specials to launch the first half of the 20-episode season, which starts airing April 4.

**snippage**

"They thought she was dead," Sackhoff says, "and now she's back, which in everyone's mind says 'Cylon.' If we look at past shows, how do they treat Cylons? They airlock them.

"So, that's where we come in, with Starbuck getting the rare, beautiful treatment of a Cylon. It's fantastic."

**snippage**
