Joshua Jackson and J.J. Abrams on "Fringe"

Wednesday, 10 September 2008

By Christina Radish

From J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the team behind Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III and Alias, comes Fringe, the new Fox television series that will thrill and terrify while it explores the blurring line between the possible and the impossible. FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), the brilliant but formerly institutionalized scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble), and his scheming, reluctant son Peter (Joshua Jackson) uncover a deadly mystery involving a series of unbelievable events and realize that they may be part of a larger, more disturbing pattern.

The show’s star, Joshua Jackson, returning to television for the first time since Dawson’s Creek, and co-creator/executive producer/writer J.J. Abrams spoke with MediaBlvd Magazine about the possibilities of fringe science.

A brief excerpt:

MediaBlvd> With the chemistry that Anna and Josh have going on, will there be love in their characters’ future?

Josh> It would have been inappropriate in the pilot because it’s awkward, hitting on a woman when her boyfriend is dying in front of her eyes.
J.J.> Now, the odds are so much better. There’s, no doubt, going to be a slow burn relationship that develops between the two of them. I don’t think it will happen exactly as you might think, but there obviously will be a dynamic there that we will play up. It just needs to be done right. There’s a lot going on in their lives, on the show, that are more urgent issues, but over time, there’s definitely going to be a relationship between the Peter and Olivia characters.

Stargate Atlantis ends its series run: Cast and crew react to the news

Nancy J Price

When word broke at the end of August that Stargate Atlantis, one of the shining stars in the Sci-Fi Network galaxy, was being canceled, ardent fans weren't the only ones who felt blasted with a stunner. After all, the show was only in its fifth season, and was more successful than ever. Straight from the set, SheKnows got reactions from series regulars as well as the show's executive producer.

More than a feeling
"Going in [to season 5], I had a feeling that this could be the last season of Atlantis, just because of the economics," says series showrunner Joe Mallozzi. "The more years you’re on the air, the more expensive it gets to produce."

Shock and awww
"The thing about this industry is that every year you're up for renewal. Every year there's the possibility that it may come to an end," adds David Hewlett, the man behind the adorably arrogant Dr Rodney McKay on both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. "We got notified a little earlier in the year than we expected –- normally it would be November or so. So it was a little bit of a shock. "

Bittersweet sympathy

That's also how Ronon Dex's alter ego Jason Momoa described the mood. "I'm little sad to be leaving a family of four years behind... Four years is a long time to play a character. So it's kind of bittersweet."

A short-timer's attitude

So what's life on the set like now as the cast is filming their last few episodes? "It's that weird sort of feeling of you're still at work, but you know it's done," says Hewlett. "There's a weird mix of sadness at the fact that we've been doing this for five years, and it's kind of hard not to get attached." After a beat, a goofy little grin creeps up onto his face. "But at the same time, there's a certain amount of 'Woo hoo! What's next? Let's go!'"

At BBC (UK):

Torchwood: Lost Souls Download

Brought to you by BBC Wales and Afternoon Play a one off episode of Torchwood.

"Somewhere out there in that chaos of darkness and light, of science and protons, of gods and stars and death... somewhere there's an answer."

The Torchwood Institute was founded by Queen Victoria in 1879 to protect the British Empire against the threat of alien invasion. By 2008, all that remains of the organisation is a small team based in Cardiff. And now, following the tragic deaths of two of their colleagues, the remaining three - Captain Jack Harkness, Gwen Cooper and Ianto Jones - have to protect the human race against another unknown force from the darkness.

Martha Jones, ex-time traveller and now working as a doctor for a UN task force, has been called to CERN - the world's largest particle physics laboratory in Geneva - where they're about to activate the Large Hadron Collider. The LHC is a particle accelerator, which has been built deep underground in a 27 km tunnel under Switzerland and France. Once activated the Collider will fire beams of protons together recreating conditions a billionth of a second after the Big Bang - and potentially allowing the human race a greater insight into what the Universe is made of. But so much could go wrong - it could open a gateway to a parallel dimension, or create a black hole - and now voices from the past are calling out to people and scientists have started to disappear...

Where have the missing scientists gone? What is the secret of the glowing man? What is lurking in the underground tunnel? And do the dead ever really stay dead?

Lost Souls is a spin-off from the award-winning BBC Wales TV production Torchwood. It stars John Barrowman, Freema Agyeman, Eve Myles, Gareth David-Lloyd, Lucy Montgomery (of Titty Bang Bang) and Stephen Critchlow.

Green Screen Cowboy: Directing SCI FI's 'Sanctuary'

By Steven Eramo

posted: 10 September 2008

As a director, whether you are shooting a feature film, TV show, or even a fast food commercial, it is up to you to help set the scene for your cast. For Martin Wood, resident director of the new upcoming SCI FI Channel series Sanctuary, that job is that much more challenging. Most of the show’s environments, along with an array of exotic, magical, and sometimes dangerous creatures (a.k.a. “abnormals”), are brought to life with green screen. On this particular morning, the director is his typically enthusiastic and animated self as he stands behind the camera on the show’s Vancouver set and works with actors Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne to get them to imagine themselves in a very different place...

As season one of Sanctuary unfolds, our heroes are going to end up traveling around the world, from the snowcapped mountains of the Himalayans, to catacombs beneath Rome, and even the waters of the Bermuda Triangle. All these locales and many more are courtesy of green screen, the benefits of which have not been lost on Wood.
“When you’re filming on a practical set, you can never think of doing, for example, a shot where a man is standing sixty stories up on a steal girder having a conversation with a woman, when one of them turns and flies away. And the whole thing is shot from above looking down at them with sixty stories of a city below you,” muses the director [Martin Wood]. “You can’t really do that on a practical set, but we can do it standing on the floor of our studio.

Why is Sci Fi dumping Stargate Atlantis? How were the ratings? Will Atlantis have movies like SG-1? — Johnny
Matt: I reached out to Atlantis show runner Joseph Mallozzi for his extremely qualified perspective on the cancelation, and frankly he's a bit stymied. After all, he shared, "The ratings for the first half of Season 5 have been better than the ratings for the back half of Season 4, which were, in turn, an improvement over the front half of last season." The light at the end of this black hole? Says Mallozzi, "Yes, the plan is to continue the stories of the Atlantis expedition in [TV]-movies."

Osoyoos desert invaded by film crew

Published: September 09, 2008 6:00 PM

Normally filmed in Vancouver, Stargate Atlantis has made a move to Osoyoos for the filming of one episode.

There’s been an alien invasion in Osoyoos.

Actually, it’s the current production of Stargate Atlantis, which is working this week...

Thanks to its scenic desert and landscape, the South Okanagan is a draw to producers.

According to the Okanagan Film Commission, the location complements co-creator Robert Cooper who wrote the episode, Vegas, that the team is currently filming...

It is suggested that Flanigan, the series’ lead actor, will be appearing in scenes shot in the Okanagan.

Vegas will be aired on local television in the beginning of 2009.

Terminator's Manson Reveals All

Shirley Manson--the newest cast member of Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles--can't fight the machine.

That is, Manson--previously known as the Scottish-born lead singer of the 1990s pop band Garbage--can't manage the vocal part of her own band's song, "I Think I'm Paranoid," as it appears in the video game Rock Band.

Seriously?
"Oh, no," she says with a laugh. "I score horribly."

She adds in her distinctive Scottish burr: "Machine vs. human. Who will win?"

It's a question she might ask about her new TV show. (Massive spoiler ahead!!)...

Birimbau, Angela's Breakup & Her New Love: 'Bones' Michaela Conlin Comes Clean

By Korbi Ghosh - September 09

A week ago, Bones' Angela and Hodgins were happily engaged. But after last Wednesday's season premiere, they're going their separate ways. So, what's to come? Michaela Conlin was kind enough to fill me in...

A brief excerpt:

Are there any interesting cases coming up that stand out?
MC: "Angela's ex-girlfriend is actually sort of embroiled in a case which is pretty interesting. But they've all been good so far. There are all these revolving interns that have been coming in [to fill] Zack's position and they've been really fun. We've had Michael Badalucco from The Practice, Carla Gallo from Undeclared. Great people. But as far as major cases go, no, not yet. Gormagon was a big thing and I think we're all recovering from that."
