The whole crew is laughing at our scene in a Wraith Dart so it's really funny. We're having some really good laughs doing it. It's been great. David and I are pretty much throughout the episode and we have a lot of stuff together. So it's a big Beckett and McKay episode."

Carson Beckett’s death in season three caused heartache aplenty for his loyal fans. But no one ever really dies in science fiction - and to prove it, season five promises to be the doctor’s most interesting year yet, says actor Paul McGillion.

...In his trailer, actor Paul McGillion settles down out of the rain to talk about Beckett’s return in season five. It’s telling that the actor even has a trailer – he’s no passing guest star, but rather an important, permanent part of the show. In fact, McGillion is back for at least five episodes of Stargate Atlantis’ fifth year, happily reprising the much-loved character that met his untimely demise in season three’s ‘Sunday’. Paul McGillion “I’m happy to be back,” he says with a smile, “I never wanted to leave the show in the first place!”
Of course, it’s worth mentioning that this Carson Beckett isn’t quite the same timid doctor we met in season one, and that’s not just because he’s become a little more inured to the terrors of the Pegasus galaxy. No, this Carson Beckett was cloned from the original by one of Atlantis’ arch enemies, Michael, and rediscovered in season four’s ‘The Kindred’. Still, the differences are subtle… so subtle, in fact, that McGillion laughs at the question of whether they are there at all.

“He’s basically exactly the same. I think he’s much more handsome in season five,” the actor jokes with another laugh. “He’s been away from craft service and he’s dropped a few pounds! But no - there was some comment in our first episode back, ‘The Seed’. There’s a little awareness [that he’s a clone] at first, but that’s diminished now. ‘Outsiders’ is my third episode back, and I think it’s almost like, ‘Whatever!’” He laughs again. “You know that it’s Beckett. I don’t have any special super powers or anything. There’s really not too much comment.”

June 9, 2008: Chinchilla Wins Mayoralty Race in San Monito County
Lining up for the wraith team's free kick.
I went over the script one last time, then handed in after lunch. Finally, I’m done. Until, of course, I get the notes and have to begin the rewrite. Alex Levine, who went over the script before distributing it, had some thoughts. He found the Shen imbroglio too subtle (I thought it might be). He bumped on the end of Act IV and its resolution (I figured some would). He felt the reveal needed to be moved up and the big decision needed more of a build (Hey, man. Don’t come to me with problems. Come to me with solutions.). I expect feedback from everyone else in the not too distant future. Hopefully before we all go our separate ways this Friday. The rest of the gang is understandably busy. Still, we did find time to gather and discuss Martin’s script (a very special Stargate Atlantis). The highpoint of the afternoon’s progress was, of course, the place-holder title we came up with: Snow Globe. Ah, the satisfaction of another day’s work well done.

Alas, it looks like I won’t be Comic Con-bound this July. Given the choice, I deferred moderation duties to Marty G. who, at the end of the day, will do a much better job than I would have (and, frankly, is in greater need of a tan). So, sorry to say no behind-the-scene snaps of the convention, party, and panels this year, but I’ll make up for it by posting video of my dog Lulu stripping the bark off my wife’s prized cedar topiary.

Between the long stretches spent seated at my desk staring blankly at my laptop screen, I did find the time to -
David Nykl (Dr. Radek Zelenka)
Help spin Carl's [Binder] story for episode 17 (or maybe 18?). A nice callback to some SG-1 tech, the return of that guest star will have the boards abuzz, and Carl searches for an appropriately grisly punishment.
Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex)
Help spin Alan's [McCullough] story for episode 18 (or maybe 17?). A mysterious arrival, a difficult dilemma, and the continuation of a storyline introduced in The Queen.
Todd (Christopher Heyerdahl) and costumers
