A brief excerpt:

Interview with Stephen E. Miller

Stargate-Planet, March 2008

Stephen Miller is best know from tv shows like Davinci's City Hall, Davinci's Inquest and from movies like "Air Bud", "Free Willy", "Zero Sum", "Alaska". We're grateful that he agreed to answer a few career related questions for our German website visitors.

S-P.de: Did you have to audition for the role of "Dr. Poole" on Stargate Atlantis and how did you prepare to play this character?

SEM: Yes, I had to audition. It went easily, because I had known the director, Andy Mikita, for some years so there was less pressure. The role didn't require a lot of preparation. I made sure I knew all my lines. When you go onto a series that you've never been on before you always want to do a good job and not let anyone down.

Behind the Scenes: Outcast

John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and Ava Dixon (Emma Lahana)

February 4, 2008 (Episodes)

Director Andy Mikita discusses filming the most atypical Stargate Atlantis episode ever – `Outcast.'

Season four has seen some truly stunning thrills and spills for the Atlantis crew, from battling the Asurans to teaming up with their arch-enemies, the Wraith. But `Outcast' reveals an entirely different challenge for John Sheppard, as some sad family news brings him back to Earth – and delivers a few unexpected bumps once he's there.

Actor Adrian Hein (Replicator) against the green screen for the Replicator in low orbit return to Earth special effect disintegration scene...

Today's mailbag:

Teslan writes: "In the original idea that Mr. Flanigan pitched out, did he go to Earth alone, or did Ronon or any other members of the team go with him? And which of the writers was responsible for the scene with Shep's brother?"

Answer: Joe's original pitch consisted of Sheppard tracking down a
replicator on Earth. We filled in the blanks, coming up with the story and breaking it over the course of a day or two. With regard to the Shep scene, the writers came up with the beat in the room after which Alan wrote the scene.

Now, where were we?

Oh yes, I remember. Stargate SG-1 aired its episodic finale, and on Stargate Atlantis you were left high and dry wondering about the fate of our fearless intergalactic explorers after a death-defying escape from the formidable power of the Replicators. Sorry, had to jog my addled memory, as so much time has passed since I last spilled the beans to you about our goings on here in Burnaby, BC. Well, rest assured, the Stargate machine keeps churning, and as long as you keep watching, it will continue to do so.

And today is a good day to bring back the blog. The production office is humming. I just saw Will Waring prepping, and chatted with Andy Mikita (who was boasting about the bottle of scotch Joe Flanigan gave him for zooming through a 10 page day). Earlier today I was in Rob Cooper's office with all the other writers talking about all the new network premieres. So, here we are. And we're actually in the tail end of our production season. "Outcast", the second last episode of the 4th season of Atlantis, is now shooting. On deck is our finale, entitled "The Last Man".

But what you really want to know about is the first episode of season 4, which airs tomorrow night, entitled "Adrift." Don't you?...

Okay, I'm back to field your comments and questions -

Anonymous #1 writes: "So, is Shep's ex-wife's name Karen or Nancy?"

Answer: While I appreciate a clearly devoted fan's attempt to correct me, I don't think I need to point out that since I was working on the script in questions yesterday afternoon, I should be in a better to know that Sheppard's ex-wife's name is Karen. I mean Nancy.

**snippage**

Elizabeth writes: "1) Will Sam be getting the ATA gene? 2) What episodes are Weir in? 3) Will the girl in Sateda be in any more episodes? 4) When is Stargate Ark Of Truth and Stargate Continuum supposed to be? After, during or before season four and season ten finale? 5) Will Bates be returning in season four?"

Answers: 1) No. 2) Good question. 3) Could be. 4) Definitely after the season ten finale. 5) Another good question.

Anonymous #2 writes: "Can you tell us if there are any plans to use Torri in season five?"

Answer: I appreciate your persistence in not taking my previous "we have no plans beyond season four" responses to heart. The truth is we've already written the whole fifth season including the Sheppard stick-fighting episode. You're gonna love it.

**snippage**

Anonymous #2 writes: "Will you ever tell us which is Torri's fourth episode this season or will you make us wait and see?"

Answer: Given that I haven't answered this question the first 50 times it was asked, I'd put my money on "make use wait and see".

**snippage**

Answer: It can be very tricky.

Today’s Q&A -

Winged Pegasus writes: “In one of the s4 promo vids, there was a hug between Sheppard and Teyla. Can you tell us which episode this is from?”

Answer: No because I honestly can’t remember.

**snippage**

Stargate Groupie writes: “I was just wondering if we would ever seen the return of Harry Maybourne?:

Answer: It’s possible.

Susan the Turtle writes: “ Is there any way that you can put captions on the individual photos or is that a bit too technical?”

Answer: Are you kidding? I was barely able to figure out how to upload them.

Anne writes: “Is it possible to attend to a day (half-day, hours ...) of filming Stargate Atlantis episode ?”

Answer: Alas, no. If we started making exceptions, our sets would be overflowing with visitors.

Kdvb1 writes: “ Hey!!! What's up with the snarky "seriously" comment... designed to make my comment look dumb???”

Answer: That wasn’t “Seriously?” as in “How can you ask such a question?” but “Seriously?” as in “Honestly and bullshit free?”.

**snippage**

Ruffles writes: “ Since the shoot of Harmony seems to have been in heavily forested surroundings, did you mean to say that Outcast would NOT take you there?”

Answer: Oops. Yes, that’s what I meant.

**snippage**

Dustin writes: “ive heard rumers that atlantis will be airing a week before anywere else on scifi is this true?”

Answer: Sorry, I don’t understand the question. Atlantis will be premiering on SciFi Friday, September 28th.

Saturday, September 8, 2007

Regulars to my blog will know that I am a relatively fearless person. With the exception of snakes, komodo dragons, massive script rewrites, and the cursed furry-skinned kiwi fruit, there isn’t much that scares me. Oh, yeah, heights. I really, really hate heights - so I guess that makes me acrophobic (which is either an irrational fear of heights or an irrational fear of acrobats although, come to think of it, in my case, both apply). Just the sight of someone I know stepping out onto a balcony is enough to make me nervous. So you can imagine my discomfort this past Thursday and Friday, as I watched Jewel and Amanda make like a couple of Cirque de Soleil vets to brave Stargate’s version of the high-wire. Jewel, who obviously has no problem with dizzying heights as evidenced by her choosing to do the Missing rope bridge sequence sans stunt double, was a veritable monkey up there - scampering up that ladder and along the crossbeams, showing off for the camera. Amanda, on the other hand who coincidentally shares my pronounced dislike for lofty elevations, demonstrated great courage in clambering up and executing her own maybe-not-death-but-certainly-serious-injury-defying walk. Both were harnessed and had director Martin Wood, and stunt coordinator Bam Bam standing by to walk them through it. I, of course, was on hand to spot, standing beneath them, arms outstretched, prepared to break their fall should the need arise. Fortunately, the need did not arise - not even when they tilted the set 20 degrees.

Unfortunately, the pics I snapped aren’t the greatest (too dark and the flash kept on firing up everyone’s eyes despite the red-eye reduction setting on my cam). Still, you get the idea.

**snippage**

The mailbag is back -

Anonymous #1 writes: “Will there be much McKay whump in this new series? Emotional and physical!”

Answer: Yes, both.

Susan the Turtle writes: “Does this mean your big trip to the great outdoors is at an end?”

Answer: Yup. Trio will take place on our standing set while Outcast will take me out and about again, but to heavily forested surroundings.

Susan the Turtle also writes: “What is the average amount of days taken to film one episode? Is there a set formulae for writing an episode?”

Answer: It takes approximately seven days to shoot an episode. Every Stargate episode follows the same structure: Tease and five acts.

Jedi writes: “ Will we ever get to see Sheppard use the stick fighting skills he's acquired from Teyla, other then just sparring?”

Answer: Not this year.

Kimberly writes: “We all want the ratings to be very high so there will be a season 5 so how do we help that along?”

Answer: Seriously? Tune in. Find someone who has a Nielsen box and make sure they tune in.

Arctic Goddess writes: “ Looking at the pictures of all those people working so hard to make Atlantis happen, I thought I would create my own personal tribute to them: Hinterland Who's Who”

Answer: Can we get Lorne Greene to do the voice-over?

**snippage**

Mrs.B108 writes: “ 1)Will we see any angsty rage from Sheppard this year? 2)Would you say this season packs more of an emotional punch than the past three?”

Answers: Yes and Definitely.

Anonymous #2 writes: “If you could describe "The Kindred" parts 1 + 2 in one word, how would you describe the episodes?”

Answer: Dovetail.

Stargate Atlantis - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Update Sep 6 - NEW Video & Photos

Alas, no owl sightings today but I did spot a colorful-looking teamster hanging around the lunch tent. Sadly, however, there was no one around to offer up wildlife commentary. Still it would‘ve been hard to beat David Hewlett‘s reaction upon spotting the owl yesterday. “My invitation to Hogwarts!”he piped up. “It’s finally arrived!”

Today, main unit was in the FX Stage, shooting the Harmony tease. And while they were shooting, I was in the office reading Paul’s pass on Outcast (offering up a more vulnerable side of Sheppard), watching a day #1 mix of Quarantine (a lot of terrific little character moments), eating pizza (Yes! Pizza!) for lunch, and composing a response to one of the many email scammers I‘ve taken to baiting of late.

**snippage**

Today’s blog is dedicated to whoever is celebrating a birthday/got sick or injured/recovered from getting sick or injured, or is related to someone who made a request to have a blog dedicated to themselves or someone they know either today, yesterday, or tomorrow.

Today’s video: see nature get a helping hand (David Hewlett).

Screen cap from the video clip.

Hey, since I’m around, allow me to field some questions -

Morjana writes: “ I noticed in the background what appeared to be plywood laid down on the forest floor. 1. Was that plywood? 2. If so, was it there for the cameras to roll on, to facilitate the the smooth movement of the camera dolly wheels?”

Answer: The plywood was laid down for both the equipment and the crew because it had rained the day before and the ground was extremely muddy.

Alipeeps writes: “So, does Joe F take a guitar with him everywhere these days?!”

Answer: Pretty much. Yup.

Flying Fig writes: “Since you had Jerry from EXTRA! on the set as a Genii, does this mean that the infotainment show is going to feature a segment on SGA? If so, did he hint when?”

Answer: Yes, Extra’s feature on Stargate Atlantis will air a couple of days before the premiere. I’ll let you know when I have a date.

**snippage**

Atlantisfannew1 a ecrit: “Attention!! révélation du projet secret!!”

Response: C’est magnifique! Merci!

Anonymous #1 writes: “1.Will Teyla get a love interest, well maybe not a love interest as such but maybe someone taking an interest. 2.Will there be lots of Teyla Whump in S4.”

Answer: Yes on both counts.

A late blog entry today as I was on location at Green Timbers for day #4 of Harmony. A very exciting outing today highlighted by an owl sighting that effectively shut down production. We were in the midst of setting up the next shot when somebody shouted: “Hey! It’s an owl!” And the next thing I knew, everyone had cleared out. I caught up with the crew beneath the large tree they had gathered around to gaze up at the magnificent bird. “Ooooh,”marveled one of the women from make-up. “Beautiful,”remarked an A.D. “I think I can hit it from here,”muttered a hopeful David Hewlett.

Eventually, the owl flew off and the disappointed crew grudgingly returned to work. Good thing too as we had a lot to get through today: six forest scenes which including a couple of crane shots for the “And why would they want to kill her?” sequence (I swear, that’s what it says on the call sheet) and some EXT. NIGHT. I’m pleased to report all went well and that, unlike yesterday, none of our actors came into contact with any poison oak. Yep, it was smooooth sailing…until around 7:30 p.m. when someone shouted “The owl’s back!” and everyone dropped what they were doing to go see.

We had kicked the long day off with Martin Wood presiding over the splinter unit filming of the Trio tease. Jewel and Amanda made an early appearance and were wrapped around noonish. Hopefully, they went home to get a good night’s sleep in preparation for tomorrow afternoon’s big “harness test”. I’ll be sure to have my camera handy for that.

Mailbag (only covering the questions I was able to save and bring with me before leaving the house this morning):

Steph writes: “…in Trinity, when Ronon shoots his Commander, Teyla says that they will not speak of it again. Will it ever be resolved?”

Answer: It was resolved. Ronon killed him.

PG15 writes: “1) Can we expect some major Emotional Shep Whump (ESW) in Outcast? 2) In fact, would you say that season four has more Shep whumping than the other seasons? 3) Would you call the 3 episodes of “The Kindred” and “The Last Man” a 3-parter? If so, would it be connected as a mid-season 3-parter? 4) After confirming that Carson will be back for 2 episodes in May, has that number changed in the 2 months following that?”

Answers: 1) There will be definitely be some emotional shep whump in Outcast. 2) Yes. 3) I wouldn’t call it a 3-parter, However, they are definitely connected. 4) No.

Today's pics: Yep. More Harmony.

Mailbag -

PG15 writes: "Can we expect extreme damage for one of the Atlantis vehicles in the near future?"

Answer: Extreme to say the least. Yep.

Jedi writes: "Will we find out if Sheppard has any siblings in S4?"

Answer: We will in Outcast.

Kath in Baltimore writes: "Is it common for a producer to go along on every location shoot?"

Answer: Some productions have on-set producers but, in the case of Stargate, our experienced directors are de facto on-set producers. Still, with my script work and editing duties complete, I am now free to go out on location and answer script-related questions or badger the director.

Majorsal writes: "How much chocolate would i have to bribe you with to insure those 12 outtakes of the 'grace' kiss would make it to a video?"

Answer: Sorry. SG-1 outtakes are out of my hands.

Redtwin writes: "Why is "Outcast" being rewritten?"

Answer: No script is perfect in its first draft so, yes, all scripts are rewritten to various degrees.

**snippage**

Anna writes: "Do you happen to know if Jonas was killed in season 9 when Kelowna fell to the Ori?"

Answer: We never explored this but, in my mind, Jonas went underground and is still alive somewhere, resisting the Ori army.

Fishbaum writes: "So, as I understand it, you and Paul Mullie are the show-runners. How come we almost never hear you talk about Paul in this blog? We hear and see lots on Gero, Binder, and all the directors.... "

Answer: Paul prefers to keep a low profile unlike the other clowns, so you don't hear from his as much.

Anonymous #2 writes: "Which season 4 episode are you most proud of so far?"

Answer: So far? Our season premiere, Adrift, is pretty damn impressive.

Sanura writes: "Are the scripts exclusively writer-edited and tweaked by performers, or is there somebody who does a copy pass for proofing errors?"

Answer: That would be Alex Levine.

Anonymous #3 writes: "When an actor pitches a script like Joe Flan did for "Outcast" once he makes a suggestion, is that all the input he has?"

Answer: That depends on how busy they are, how involved they choose to be and, more importantly, how quickly we have to get the script out.

Susan W. writes: "Are there any official channels by which fans or other members of the public might submit an idea or even a script that you *could* read it and/or use it if it has merit? Is there a particular address or person to whom such could be sent, or a way of disclaiming ownership that would make it possible for you?"

Answer: I'm sure there are a lot of great ideas out there but, at present, we aren't seeking outside submissions.

Anon Y. Mous writes: "Can you tell us if any episodes are fully complete and ready for airing? How far in advance of airing are the episodes due at Sci-Fi? How do you determine if an episode needs a "previously on" segment and who makes that decision the producers or the writers?"

Answers: Yes, a number of episodes are complete (Adrift, Lifeline, Missing, Doppelganger, and Travelers come to mind). As for how far in advance of airing the episodes "are due" at Sci-Fi - it varies. This year, we had plenty of time to deliver as our premiere was pushed back to late September. Re: the previously on. The producers are the writers and we make the call although we'll honor specific SciFi requests.

Happy National Beheading Day! I’m sure you’re all celebrating in your own special ways. For my part, I feted the event with chocolate, a good book, and FilmFocus’s Top 10 Movie Decapitations:

http://www.filmfocus.co.uk/specials/topten.asp?id=decapitations

**snippage**

Let’s field some questions and comments:

PG15 writes: “Which episodes have yet to be filmed? Are all of the episodes being written/finished being written?”

Answer: Outcast is being re-written as we speak and there’s a first draft out of the season finale, The Last Man. We are partway through filming Harmony and will be moving on to Trio next. Outcast will follow Trio and then we’ll be finishing up with season finale.

Teyilia writes: “1) I can see that you guys are gonna be (possibly) rushed for the finale as you guys are gonna film it AFTER the season goes on the air? 2) is that good or bad? 3) how long does it take to flim one eposide? and the last one has been a bit changed... 4) If you see Rachel can you pass on a "hi" from her counterparts kitty please?”

Answers: 1) Why would you assume we are rushing anything? The season premiere has no effect on our shooting schedule. 2) ? 3) 7 days. 4) Sure.

Becky S writes: “In what episodes of season 4 will we see David Ogden Stiers appearing?”

Answer: You’ll be seeing him early in season four.

Anonymous #1 writes: “oooooh genii jerry is very good looking!! Can we expect to see him regularly? Please?”

Answer: Jerry? Is that you?

Charlie writes: “I really want to know if David.H and Joe.F are democrats or republicans.”

Answer: Feel free to ask them at their next con appearance.

On the work front: shooting continues on the big team-up eppy, finished the polish on Harmony, almost finished my producer's cut of Kindred I as I await the completion of the Previously On sequence, an exhausted Martin completed his latest (and last) rewrite of Trio, read the first draft of Outcast, and watched the episode with the engagement scene (I have a feeling the fans will love it).

Today’s Q&A -

Teyilia writes: “Since the finale is being written at this time yes? when does actual filming for it start/end?”

Answers: Yes and end of September.

Flying Fig writes: “I know what a director's cut is (for DVDs, etc.) but what is a producer's cut?”

Answer: At the end of the day, the producer’s cut is the finished version.

ChevronSeven writes: “What exactly goes into polishing a script?”

Answer: Depends on the script notes.

Jill_Ion writes: “Are you sure all of the aliens on Stargate are fake?”

Answer: All but one.

Scifan writes: “ Maybe for season 5, you can have a story contest.”

Answer: Sorry. The production has nothing to do with organizing contests. That would be SciFi and MGM’s area of expertise.

Anonymous #1 writes: “Also, did you know Netflix is already way ahead of you and the team on the seasons of SGA?”

Answer: Parallel universes? Really? Cool!

[It's true! I was over at Netflix today, and you can "save" Stargate Atlantis Seasons 4 AND 5 to your Queue! I love it -- the power of positive thinking! - Morjana]

Anonymous #2 writes: “If Atlantis gets picked up for a season 5, when would you start writing for it?”

Answer: Hopefully well be spinning stories in November.

Zabadoo writes: “1.)I was in the process of writing a script to put in my portfolio to send with my college applications, and my computer crashed and it got deleted. (…) Has that ever happened to you, if so, any suggestions that can help to get it going again? 2) I heard there is a continuation to the Gero/McKay episodes... 3).)Should we expect any dark twists in Sheppard's backstory? Like is there a reason he hasn't told anyone much of who he was before? 4.)The episodes that Paul McGillion is in, is it going to be a completely different character from what we've seen before?”

Answers: 1) Let anger and desperation be your muse. 2) Gero/McKay episodes? 3) Don’t know what you mean by “dark”. 4) No, it’ll be the guy we knew.

Pattirose4 writes: “Any chance of casting Peter Wingfield in an upcoming role?”

Answer: He already played Tanith on SG-1 and was killed off in season 5.
