Sanctuary's Christopher Heyerdahl - The Beast Within

It was over 120 years ago that Montague John Druitt became a suspect in Jack the Ripper's serial killing of eight prostitutes that were carried out in London between August and November 1888. A teacher at Blackheath's boy's school, he was dismissed from his place of employment shortly before committing suicide in November 1888.

Who would have thought that Druitt would resurface, albeit in fictional form, on the hit Sci-Fi TV series Sanctuary. He and his former lover, Dr. Helen Magnus, were part of a group of 19th century scientists called "The Five." Their experiments with pure vampire blood gave each of them an Abnormal power, Druitt's being the ability to teleport. His body was later taken over by a homicidal energy creature that drove him to commit the Jack the Ripper murders.

Photobucket

Druitt made his debut in a series of eight 15-minute Sanctuary webisodes, with veteran stage, feature film and TV actor Christopher Heyerdahl cast in the role. Because this is a character that has lived considerably longer than the ordinary human being, he wanted to try his best to get that as well as several other things across in his performance.
"Whenever you're creating a character for the first time, especially one that you think so highly of after reading the script, your number one concern is making sure you do him justice," says Heyerdahl. "So with John Druitt I started out doing a lot of research into the time period that he came from, and then through the past 150 years that he's spent on this planet and compared it to the nearly five decades that I've been here. It's a perspective that is very particular.

"There are quite a few octogenarians and even older individuals who live in the same building as I do in Vancouver. I spoke with a number of them about how peculiar life is when you've seen so much and in a world that has changed so dramatically, certainly in the last 80 or 90 years. You then try to bring all that into the relationship between Druitt and Magnus [Amanda Tapping], which has experienced an awful lot, too. He knows that she brought their child Ashley [Emilie Ullerup] to term, and in the webisodes he's been searching and searching for her for pretty much 120 years..."

Sanctuary / Stargate Atlantis - Sci Fi Pi: Christopher Heyerdahl Interview

Interview with Christopher Heyerdahl from Sanctuary

Sunday, February 28 by Captain

Christopher Heyerdahl is one of the pillars of the Sci Fi acting community. Some fans may not know him (some!) but everyone has seen his work, at one time or another, be it on Stargate, Stargate: Atlantis, Supernatural, Twilight, Smallville, The Chronicles of Riddick, Andromeda and of course Sanctuary, where he plays not one, but two characters - the loyal Bigfoot, and the dark and dangerous John Druitt.

We managed to scrape into a small wedge in Christopher's busy schedule to have a chat with the man who created the likes of Todd the Wraith and talk to him about what he and Amanda Tapping get up to on the set of Sanctuary, what it's like being related to a famous explorer, what he thinks of the status of Stargate: Extinction and where you should go should you be in the market for a bicycle next time you're in British Columbia.

A classically trained stage actor with years of experience, he has gravitated towards the world of televised Science Fiction with aplomb, bringing gravity, levity and a striking physicality to a multitude of roles.

A man dedicated to his craft, but also dedicated to enjoying himself, Heyerdahl is happy to open up to reveal the inner workings of true character, a true character actor, and genuine, bona fide Sci Fi star. Grab a cup of coffee, maybe a biscuit or two, and read on!

A brief excerpt:

...Do you ever draw comparisons between the 'love affair' between Todd and John Sheppard and that between Helen Magnus and John Druitt?
CH: " *(laughs)*
Not until this moment! I think the difference is you're dealing with a love that was, and cannot ever be, between, just to clarify *(laughs)* between Helen and John. *(laughs)* With John and Todd, it's an acknowledgement of a worthy comrade and foe. It's complex, even though they both want the same thing, they're at odds. One is the great American military beast, and the other is the great Wraith military beast. Todd is far more intelligent than John, given that he's a 10,000 year old scientist, but he certainly appreciates John's instinctive intelligence, his fearless ways and also his honour. There's a bond that can only be made by two men who've spent time in prison!"...

Christopher Heyerdahl, who portrays "Marcus" in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has just signed on for the Official Twilight Convention tour, and his first stop on the tour was in Miami, Florida.

... During Heyerdahl's appearance at the show, the Lexicon was able to nab an exclusive two-part video interview with Heyerdahl, and they asked some of the most interesting questions about his involvement with the Twilight saga, including some about how being a part of this franchise compares to his past in other science fiction franchises like Supernatural, Stargate: Atlantis, and Smallville...

...Sanctuary (Syfy), Friday at 9 p.m.

Two-hour season finale!

It's hard to believe we're at the end of Sanctuary's second season already. But at least the season is ending with what creator Damian Kindler believes are "two of the most original episodes Sanctuary has ever done." In "Kali, Parts 1 and 2," when all the abnormals in the world begin to behave irrationally, it leads to an ancient abnormal who could destroy billions of lives if left unchecked. The episodes are "completely outside the box," said Kindler. "You will see monster and creature design on a scale we've never attempted before. 'Kali, Parts 1 and 2' are really about a global threat, and we take the audience places they've never been, and we show footage we shot in Tokyo when we were there. And then we take you to our version of Bombay, the ocean depths, the middle of the Indian Ocean. In part two there is, believe it or not, an amazing Bollywood dance by Will Zimmerman." Beyond the dancing Zimmerman, Syfy announced it's picked up Sanctuary for a third season.

Amanda Tapping previews 'Haunted' ep of 'Sanctuary'

by Curt Wagner

on 01.06.10

So what exactly does Helen Magnus see in John Druitt, her serial-killer ex, on Syfy's "Sanctuary?"

Get ready to find out.
"I think you finally see why Helen fell in love with this man in the first place," Amanda Tapping, who plays Helen, said over the phone on Monday. "You get a hint of the depth of their love and the trust, and his passion and intelligence. He was at one point and time a gentle soul, and you can sort of see a bit of that."

In the episode, called "Haunted" and airing at 9 p.m. Friday, Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a refugee Helen and the Sanctuary team rescued from a sinking ship off the coast of South Africa. Helen also worries that he's causing some odd happenings within the Sanctuary that have isolated the teams in pairs of two...

.. Tapping and I talked about the Jan. 15 season finale and the show's upcoming third season, which she and co-producers Martin Wood and Damian Kindler are just starting to plan. And she was more than happy to answer all of your questions, so come back over next few days.

Druitt's back, but did he commit murder?

Sanctuary returns with the final episodes of the second season. In "Haunted," Magnus (Amanda Tapping), Druitt and the team save the passengers and crew of a ship sinking off the coast of South Africa. However, after the refugees are teleported to the safety of the Sanctuary, one of them is brutally murdered and Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) becomes the key suspect in the crime.
"If you are fans of Druitt and Magnus and their star-crossed relationship, you don't want to miss that one," said executive producer Damian Kindler. "It features a lot about the Sanctuary and a lot of the history of John Druid. A very intense episode. If you like Jack the Ripper served up heavy, you're going to like this episode."

Sanctuary’s Robin Dunne – A Will Of His Own

by Steven Eramo

It was not that long ago that forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman crossed paths with Dr. Helen Magnus, but was it fate or happenstance that brought them together? It was, in fact, no accident that the scientist sought out Will and offered him the opportunity to become her protegé and part of the Sanctuary team. His curiosity got the better of him and he accepted. Since then, Will has been helping Magnus protect one of Earth’s oldest and sometimes most dangerous inhabitants, creatures called Abnormals. In Sanctuary’s first season finale, Revelations, a mysterious group known as the Cabal set a plan in motion to turn Abnormals against humankind. Unknown to our heroes, this was the prelude to something far bigger, and for the actor who plays Will, Robin Dunne, it marked the end of what had been a challenging first year on the job.
“I had never done a full season of a TV show before, and certainly not one like this,” says Dunne during a break in filming on Sanctuary’s Vancouver set. “I loved it and it was so much fun doing the things that we did, but it was tough, too. There were some very demanding episodes, so by the end of last season I felt like I’d just crossed the finish line of a marathon. It was great to get to the finale, where we were wrapping stuff up and bringing in other characters. Not only did I get to work with our core cast – Amanda Tapping [Magnus], Ryan Robbins [Henry Foss], Emilie Ullerup [Ashley Magnus] and Chris Heyerdahl [John Druitt/Bigfoot] – but also Jonathon Young [Nikola Tesla], who came back for a visit, and Peter Wingfield [John Watson]. It was such an amazing story and brought together a number of loose ends..."
