Stargate Atlantis - MGM Stargate: Behind the Scenes: The Kindred, Part 1

From MGM Stargate:

Behind the Scenes: The Kindred, Part 1

February 25, 2008 (Episodes)

`The Kindred' takes the team to a whole variety of new places – and it was down to production designer James Robbins to create them!

A brief excerpt:

`The Kindred' is an epic adventure for the Atlantis crew, picking up on the story of Teyla's lost people, her unborn baby and another of the team's arch-enemies, Michael. It's an episode that sees much of its action take place away from the City in a range of new places.

For the first episode in the two-part extravaganza, production designer James Robbins had several new environments to carry the story. There, was, for example, the facility in which Michael has been conducting his experiments, and the village Teyla's visions lead them to.

Episode Guide

http://gateworld.net/atlantis/s4/418.shtml

Which includes notes in the Production Guide, and this particular gem:

On the return of Carson Beckett: "We wanted to do it in a way that would feel organic with what we were doing for the rest of the season. ... All I'm going to say is we planned how we were going to bring him back at the end of Season Three, and no one caught it. And that's how we would like it to stay. And that story doesn't come to a boil until the end of Season Four, and that's when we're going to bring him back."

(Writer/producer Martin Gero, in an interview with Slice of SciFi)

Stargate Atlantis - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog Update Feb 23 '08 - NEW Photos

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for February 23, 2008:

http://josephmallozzi.wordpress.com/2008/02/23/february-23-2008-the-kindred-part-1-what-the-hell-was-i-thinking/

February 23, 2008:

The Kindred, Part 1 - What the hell was I thinking?!

Long before this script was outlined or we had even sat down to spin this story, I had two scenes in mind for Beckett's return to Stargate Atlantis. The first, was the final scene of part one. The second, was the final scene of part two. Aside from those two scenes, I had no idea how the events leading up to this episode would dovetail and pay off. I knew we wanted to bring Carson back (the groundwork had been subtly laid way back in Season 3's Vengeance in which, after some discussion with Carl and Martin, it was decided to go back and layer in a clue pointing to Michael's involvement in the seeming resurrection. Isn't it funny how Michael's made so much progress with the retrovirus? It's like he's taken our research and made it his own).

We wanted to solve the mystery of the missing Athosians. And we wanted to bring back the Michael and pay off all of his nefarious planning with a big, galaxy-wide scheme. Sure, there were other elements that we wanted to set up/include/pay-off, but those were the big goals. Goals, clearly, too big for only one episode. So we spun both stories and I took part one, while Alan headed off with part two. What follows are my (now hazy) recollections of the writing of Kindred I -

**BRIG. GEN. SNIPPAGE**

Like I said - way back when, before we even sat down to spin this story, I knew how I wanted Part 1 to end. And if SciFi hadn't spoiled it in their promo, it would have been perfect.

Stargate Atlantis - A Poem for The Kindred, Part 1

Stargate Atlantis, how do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth of the Machiavellian plotting in this episode,
and the heigth of Ronon in all his glory (and that his soul can reach).
When I'm feeling out of sorts
for the ends of entertainment and ideal joy
I have thee, Stargate Atlantis, to brighten my week!
For the ends of being ideal TV fare
I love thee to the level of Friday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light, and electricity
I love thee freely, as men strive for right in the Pegasus Galaxy.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise (mainly from the cursed media critics).
I love thee with the passion put to use to protect Teyla and all whom the Lanteans love and vow to protect.
In my old grief with unfulfilled promise of TV joy (Firefly) , and with my childhood's faith (in Star Trek: The Original Series)
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose (for a few moments)
With the cancellation of Stargate SG1.
I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better during SEASON TEN!

(With all due apologies to Elizabeth Barrett Browning)

And wow! Peter Woeste was back to direct this episode! We missed you Peter!

Haunted by Morjana... and the Googlions

**snippage**

Okay, so... tonight's episode: The Kindred Pt. 1, working titled "Rise of the Googlions". Hilarious. That was just a silly working title Carl Binder came up with, but everybody liked saying it so much that, yup, you guessed it - it actually ended up on some of the production paperwork, specifically art department sketches. And
then it was used frequently in conversation as well. "What's up with Googlions?" "When are we shooting Googlions?". So, as a result, we've become a little more careful with our working titles.

And, of course, I now have to be extra careful with my spoilers. But what I can tell you about The Kindred Pt. 1 is that Connor Trinnear's Michael plays a central role in this two parter. So all you half-wraith fans, get your popcorn ready. And also this is sort of a "Teyla" story as well. Okay, I better shut up now before I get in
more trouble. Look for Joe Mallozzi to discuss this episode at length in his blog tomorrow at http://www.josephmallozzi.wordpress.com.

Enjoy!

Stargate Atlantis

10 pm/ET SCI FI New

When a science-fiction character rises from the dead, it can be in a good way (like Spock from Star Trek III) or a bad way (à la Night of the Living Dead). Fortunately for a crew already dealing with a catastrophic sickness affecting human populations, fan-favorite physician Carson Beckett looks nothing like a zombie in Part 1 of this two-parter. Paul McGillion reprises his role as Dr. Beckett, whose hair and eyebrows have grown back following the explosive tumor that supposedly killed him in Season 3.

Hmmm...for some reason, the MGM Stargate site doesn't have a downloadable trailer for this episode.

They have a version that you can watch at the site, but the brightness control is way off -- it's really dark.

Click on "The Kindred, Part 1" watch preview on the left hand side of the page (at the top).

Or the MGM Stargate Atlantis section:

Todd (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Caldwell (Mitch Pileggi) are also in this episode.

(Some screenprints from the trailer, that I've tried to brighten.)
