‘Terminator’ gives geeks a reason to stay home on Friday nights
OK, so it’s no surprise that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was getting pummelled in the ratings by its competition last season. Monday night has become the new Thursday as must-see TV, and The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, Chuck, The Bachelor and Gossip Girl were all worthy foes.
With the recent returns of American Idol and 24 in the Fox lineup, taking up major real estate on the schedule, the network had virtually no choice but to move Terminator from Mondays to Friday nights starting tomorrow. And while that might not seem like an ideal situation for a show on the bubble, this one might actually work in the series’ favour.
Now teamed up with the much-anticipated Dollhouse from Joss Whedon, the two shows seem like a match made in heaven. And Friday-night stay-at-homers will be reaping the benefits since they can hunker down and watch two straight hours of sci-fi goodness on Fox.
Creator and executive producer Josh Friedman and series star Summer Glau (Cameron) discussed the move to Friday night, Fox’s expectations, Cameron’s backstory and the season’s jaw-dropping finale.

What are your thoughts on the new Friday timeslot and what advantages or disadvantages do you feel it offers?
Summer Glau: I don’t think we were getting our asses kicked; I just think there’s a lot of stuff on Mondays.
SG: I think it’s a great move. I think its fun and I think that the shows are very well-paired. I love Joss [Whedon, the creator] and I know some of the actors on Dollhouse and I’m rooting for us both. I think it’s going to be a fresh start for us.

... Have there been any big surprises as you've gotten to know your character better?
Not huge surprises, but it's interesting thinking about the direction I got from Joss in some of the first episodes -- I was a little confused. But it's funny, coming full circle six episodes later, I completely understand why. The man's juggling a lot of things -- I'm obviously not privy to the long storyline, and he didn't always have the opportunity to share all that with me. But it was good to kind of question some of the directions and choices he was making for my character in the very beginning and seeing it make sense some episodes later.

Former Battlestar Galactica cast member Tahmoh Penikett takes on a completely different role as troubled FBI agent Paul Ballard in Joss Whedon's upcoming Fox sci-fi series Dollhouse, and he told SCI FI Wire his character is kind of obsessed with uncovering the truth.
The series centers on the title operation, a top-secret group that wipes the personalities of its operatives, called "actives," then implants them with new ones that execute missions for paying clients, only to be wiped blank anew when a mission is completed. The show was created by Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, one of the actives.
Following is an edited version of our interview with Penikett. Dollhouse debuts Feb. 13 and will air Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Penikett: I've said this a couple of times. ... I personally think at one time Paul was being groomed for a long and successful career in the FBI. I think he had all the makings of a leader, of a very successful agent. He's intelligent, capable, hard-working, driven. And who knows where he went down a different path? ... Maybe his ambitions; ... sometimes he may have rushed in. I think there's something about him that I'm very curious about, too, and hopefully we're going to explore [it]. ... He's somewhat self-righteous. He alienates himself. And I think that might be part of the problem, where he made the mistakes in his career. So he's given this case, [with] nobody really thinking that he's going to get anywhere with it, and the thing about Paul that a lot of people have underestimated is that once he starts something, he's not quitting it. He won't quit until he's found stuff. ...

It’s one day at a time. We have an awesome team of writers. People are excited. My confidence and my enthusiasm and my excitement have only gotten more fierce. It’s like a dream to be working with someone who has such a serious soul and such as serious voice, and he knows what he is saying and what he is creating and how important and how relevant it is.
And Joss is a liberated, clever guy. He wants people to think that he is super-cynical, but he is not at all. He has this view of the world that I feel is so extraordinary, because nothing is black and white. He can play in that grey area and with good versus evil so spectacularly that every script and every piece of material that I get from him is a joy.

Genre television has been very good to actor Tahmoh Penikett. In only six years he’s appeared in everything from Dark Angel to Stargate SG-1 to Smallville, but it’s been his four season stint as Captain Karl 'Helo' Agathon on Battlestar Galactica that’s really put him on the map. His intense and layered portrayal of the idealistic captain has scored him loyal fans both with the audience and in the industry. So much so that his work on BSG has directly led him to his current roll as Agent Paul Smith on Joss Whedon’s upcoming midseason Fox drama, Dollhouse.
An avowed BSG fan, Whedon saw just what he needed in Penikett to play a FBI agent obsessed with finding and exposing a secret company called the Dollhouse, which programs humans called “Dolls” to be anything or anyone a paying client wants them to be.
Recently Penikett talked about the odd transition of finishing the last episodes of his beloved Battlestar Galactica and moving on to the new world of Whedon’s Dollhouse.

“It was sad. It was a grind,” the actor emotionally realls shooting the BSG series finale in July. “We were bumping scenes every day and trying to get it done in a very short amount of time. I just wanted to be present and enjoy every minute of it. This was the last time I was ever going to work with these people, probably for a long time – maybe forever with some of them. I just wanted to be there. We worked hard. I finished on a Friday night at 4 o’clock in the morning. It was a grind but good. I enjoyed it. I was there and like, ‘Let’s get this done! Let’s work our asses off!’ We were all exhausted but [executive producer] Ron Moore came to the end and celebrated with us after...”

Joss Whedon offers a sneak peak at his brand-new Dollhouse

Whedon, creator/producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, will return to series television with the show Dollhouse. However, Fox won't debut the show until early next year. Dollhouse reunites Whedon with Eliza Dushku, who kicked butt and cracked heads as Faith on both Buffy and Angel.
She stars in Dollhouse as Echo, an "Active" who lives in a top-secret, for-profit, majorly illegal facility called the Dollhouse, where the Actives are assigned all manner of missions, and with each mission they're reprogrammed, with earlier memories wiped out and replaced by the information necessary to carry out the latest job. So, for example, Echo might be someone's dream date on one mission and an assassin the next. Crises arise, though, when Echo begins to retain memories from past assignments and to question who she really is.
Co-stars on the series will include Olivia Williams, Fran Kranz, Enver Gjokaj, Dichen Lachman, Harry Lennix and two genre favorites: Angel veteran Amy Acker and Tahmoh Penikett of Battlestar Galactica. SCI FI Weekly recently caught up with Whedon in New York City, and he excitedly offered a preview of things to come on Dollhouse.

How ready were you to jump into another TV show?
Whedon: I guess I was totally ready. I just had no idea it was going to happen. It literally did happen after lunch with Eliza, which is a tale that sounds like a bad biopic but is actually true. I went home and said to my wife, "Honey, I accidentally created a Fox show." And she just said, "Fine." She knew it was right, that this was very organic, and the timing was right. I'd been aware a while. I'd mourned for my last show [Firefly]. I'd been working in movies and then not working in movies for a while. And then it's just all flowed so naturally that even though I didn't know I was ready, I was clearly ready.
What will we see on a weekly basis?
Whedon: On a weekly basis we will see Eliza as a different person. On a weekly basis she'll have a different engagement every week, and she'll have a different purpose and a different personality. The exciting thing and part of the other reason I created the show is that Eliza is very versatile, and this will be a chance for her to play 100 different people. They'll all be her. She's not going to wear old-person makeup or anything like that, but they'll all be from very different social strata, with very different agendas and very different motivations and very different things. Every week she'll have an agenda that's evil or decent or sexual or romantic or altruistic. It can be anything. But there will be a flow-through of the show as well, about her and the characters surrounding her and how the Dollhouse works, how it doesn't work, and her burgeoning self-awareness. Between these engagements she's this complete innocent and starts to go, "Hey, here I am in the Garden of Eden. What's this apple, and what do I do with it?"
