‘Battlestar’ returns with a boom

Grace Park dishes on the final season of ‘BSG’

It’s baaaaaaaaaaack! Battlestar Galactica, the sci-fi winner of Emmy, Hugo, Saturn and Peabody awards, is returning for its fourth and final season at last.

Following a decimated human population and a fleet of spaceships on the run from the robot Cylons, the show has won over critics and fans alike with its grainy realism and underlying socio-political questions.

Season 4 launches as the 50,000 humans continue toward a refuge Earth. While suspicions arise around the return of Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff, Bionic Woman), four fleet members struggle with the revelation that they’re actually Cylons.

Grace Park, the bubbly actress who plays three versions of one Cylon character (Sharon/Boomer/Athena), chatted with TVGuide.ca during a press tour in Toronto.

TVGuide.ca: You’ve also done The Outer Limits and Stargate SG-1 – are you a hardcore sci-fi fan?

Grace Park: No! [Laughs.] I didn’t even realize I was doing sci-fi until people started looking at my resume. I think that’s mostly because I was an actor in Vancouver [where many sci-fi shows are shot], after The X-Files.

TVG: Boomer has so many versions. How do you prepare to play them?

GP: In the beginning there was just one character. But it was a little challenging even then, because it was like, ‘OK, so her programming’s coming out. What does that look like?’ You have to look within yourself for things you’re in denial about. And then we had another Sharon, who’s now known as Athena. And that seemed simple because she was living a lie her whole life.

TVG: Most BSG fans are pretty hardcore...

GP: I feel like most of our viewership is pretty smart to be able to follow a show like Battlestar. But then again, it’s not rocket science. It could be if you’re trying to figure out every single thread, but there are so many other elements – action, sensuality, politics, character development.

What happens when a sniper-turned-FBI Agent teams up with a brilliant but socially limited forensic anthropologist to solve murders that seem, well, pretty much unsolvable? A smash hit US drama series, that's what. With season three of Bones recently concluding in jaw-dropping fashion, exec producer Hart Hanson tells us what's to come for Agent Seeley Booth and Dr. Temperance Brennan in the future.

How are plans coming along for season four?

"They [the US network] started ordering episodes for season four, but we never got the call to say we’d been picked up for it until upfronts week. Now people are starting to talk about season five and I’m thinking, 'Jeez, I hope this show holds.' I don’t want to call the president of the network and ask if it’s true because maybe he’ll say no. Our audience follows us around from timeslot to timeslot – and we’ve been steadily building an audience, so I hope it does."

How do you feel about David Boreanaz directing some of the episodes next season?

"David is going to be great. He’s been asking not to be written out of any scenes in the show before because he’s like that – but we really should write him down a little bit so that he can properly prep his episode. If you see an episode where you don’t see David as much as you’d like to next season, the following episode will be the one that he directs. Keep your eyes peeled."

From the frozen wastes of the Arctic Circle to the terrors of a changed timeline, the SG-1 team’s latest adventure is their most amazing yet! Writer and Executive Producer Brad Wright opens our series on the making of Stargate Continuum.

A brief excerpt:

**snippity doo-dah**

[Richard Dean] Anderson isn’t the only familiar face that long-term fans will recognize in Continuum, either. Amongst others, William Devane returns as President Hayes and Cliff Simon reappears as SG-1’s old Nemesis Ba’al – which provided an opportunity for Wright to explore a few alternative paths for another favorite face.

“I wasn’t going to use Vala as extensively as I did,” Wright explains, “and then Robert [Cooper] suggested a certain twist that makes her far more villainous and essential to the final part of the movie.”

In fact, Claudia Black gets a chance to explore Vala’s life before ridding herself of Qetesh. “It’s fun because this is a Qetesh that would have been different, even from the other timeline,” Wright points out, “because this is a Qetesh who was forced into marriage with Ba’al. Ba’al says, ‘I want you to be my queen’, which is a Goa’uld way of imposing servitude. But Qetesh is a Goa’uld, and obviously wants the power for herself.”

Watch out for the second part of our chat with writer and executive producer Brad Wright – coming soon!
