Through the Stargate with SGU's Elyse Levesque

The Stargate Universe star talks about the return of the series and what's to come.

March 31, 2010 - After a midseason break, Stargate Universe is back with new episodes this Friday. I had the chance to speak to one of the show's stars, Elyse Levesque, about the return of the series and get some hints at what's to come. Levesque discussed the evolution of her character, Chloe Armstrong; the continuing love triangle between Chloe, Lt. Scott, and Eli and more.

A brief excerpt:

IGN: Some viewers felt that the female characters weren't proactive enough in the initial episodes.
Levesque: We've got some really great stuff in the back half of the season with all the female characters, where I think we all see them come out and step up. I think the reason people thought that in the beginning… What they have to remember is that -- and I think with some of the male characters we saw weaknesses [as well] -- is that's kind of the point of the story we're trying to tell.

These people, they weren't designed to be here. They're all completely scared and out of their element and unsure. My character, Chloe, had never been off-world before, had never been out in space like that, and all of a sudden she's living on a space ship and her dad's dead and her entire life is turned upside down. Tamara is not a full-on doctor; she's just a medic, and she's just one person. It's overwhelming to have to do all this. And Camile is constantly having to go up against Young, and this, that and the other thing. But we see, I think, them all come into their own in the back half of this season, and it just honestly gets better and better, and there's a really kick-butt female character that's introduced in the very end of the back half, and it's just interesting. There's some really interesting dynamics going on. I think there's a lot more girl power in the back half.

A Possible Emmy In The Works? : SGU Returns from Hiatus and Ferreira and Smith Spill the Beans

Tuesday, 30 March 2010

Photobucket

Editors Note: The fist two episodes of the next half of SGU, “Space” and “Divided” were released to the press prior to this call. This article does contain a spoiler, but not one that is unexpected, and not the details of how it is implemented. So stop reading now if that is an issue.

As we return to the Destiny, the strife between the civilian and military crew members, forced to co-exist aboard the ancient star ship explodes. The first two entries in this second ten of the fledging entry into the Stargate Universe establish two facts unequivocally; one this is the best science fiction show currently in production for US television (and maybe the best drama also), and two, if there isn’t an Emmy in this for at least two of the cast members, then there is something wrong with that process. Ming-Na and Louis Ferreira (along with another actor) stand apart from the ensemble cast in these two episodes in scenes that explode the conflict and distrust between civilian and military control aboard the Destiny. This story line is done in a way relevant to real world politics, and that echoes the best sentiments of relevancy previously reserved for the network’s Battlestar Galactica, a show which once dealt with a similar theme. Watch these two as their relationship expands and explodes, or you are missing out on some of the best acting and character development of the year, maybe ever for the network. And you won’t believe what Camile Wray does to Col. Young, and will come to understand why, if he is the father figure of the crew, she needs a good spanking! (inside joke). Spoilers won’t be revealed here, other than to say that Rush isn’t really gone for long (but details can be found elsewhere on the internet) and that this show firmly establishes itself as what it is: the flagship series of the SyFy Channel.

Exclusive Interview: IT'S SEASON FIVE AND DAVID BOREANAZ IS STILL DIGGING 'BONES'

The star talks about directing the series 100th episode, his priorities on the show and where he sees his career going from here

By ABBIE BERNSTEIN, Contributing Writer
Published 3/29/2010

Word is that changes are afoot for the BONES characters this season, starting with the series’ 100th episode, “The Parts in the Sum of the Whole,” scheduled to air April 8. David Boreanaz, who stars as FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth and is one of the show’s producers, directed the pivotal episode.

Naturally, he doesn’t want to give too much away, but here’s what he will say about his hit Fox show, now in its fifth season and already picked up for a sixth...

A brief excerpt:

F: Looking ahead, do you see yourself prioritizing acting over directing, or directing over acting?
BOREANAZ: I don’t really prioritize either/or. I mean, I have a deal at Fox, so I could actually go in and develop something with them, or go anywhere and develop something with anyone. I’ve been very blessed and fortunate to be on three successful television series. I love the acting part of it, I love the producing part of it, and so I’ll maintain myself in this world and see where it takes me.

Stargate Universe - Show Patrol: Brad Wright: Action-packed destiny for 'SGU 1.5'

At Chicago Now's Show Patrol (Chicago, IL):

Brad Wright: Action-packed destiny for 'SGU 1.5'

by Curt Wagner on 03.26.10

Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper

Brad Wright admits to mistakes in early episodes of "Stargate Universe," but he believes "SGU 1.5" will convince disillusioned fans to stick with the latest edition of the long-running franchise.

"I think the second half of Season 1 is strong, or stronger, and certainly answers some of the criticisms that have been thrown toward the show," Wright told me during a conversation around the time the "SGU 1.0" DVD set dropped.

I'm thinking critcs will change their minds about the show, which returns at 8 p.m. April 2 on Syfy. After viewing the first two episodes of "SGU 1.5," I have even more admiration for producers Wright, Robert C. Cooper and their entire crew in Vancouver. The episodes--"Space" and "Divided"--are action-packed yet keep the sinister, is-my-shipmate-my-enemy tone that the team established solidly in the first half of the season.

The new episodes expand the "Universe," which, as Wright explained, is only possible after the dramatic foundation that was built earlier in the season.
"Robert and I strongly felt that for us to say we're doing a character drama--at the very beginning especially--we have to engage with the characters and have them interact in a big, big way," Wright said. "And then once we know them very intimately--as we do now I think--we can put them in an action-adventure, jeopardy situation. When you know them as intimately as we do now, it's easier for you to care about the stakes, or the ramifications of what's going to happen."

Wright and I talked more about where the Destiny has gone and where it's going, but I also wanted to address the criticisms launched at the show. He was honest and candid in his answers, admitting that the female characters at the beginning "weren't as present," but said he never dismissed the concerns of fans...

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

Spoiler alert: Brad Wright talks 'Stargate Universe 1.5'

We've already seen plenty of aliens in the first part of "Stargate Universe" Season 1. Remember the sperm-looking thingies on the planet in "Time" and the swarm from "Air" and "Water"?

Brad Wright and crew have even more surprises in store when the show comes back at 8 p.m. April 2 on Syfy. If you haven't seen the MGM trailer above, or read anything on the Internet: Stop reading! Otherwise, enjoy this portion of my chat with Wright ...

At GateWorld:

GateWorld Podcast: SGU’s Anti-Heroes

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

The heroes of the Stargate universe have done some “damned distasteful things” over the years, often walking the moral line … and sometimes crossing it. In Stargate Universe, however, the writers’ goal was to avoid the heroic archetypes and create characters who are all varying shades of grey. But can we as viewers still love these characters and engage in their stories? We can relate to their imperfections … but can we look up to them?

In this week’s episode of the podcast GateWorld’s Darren and David talk about the “anti-heroes” of SGU, and the capacity of such true-to-life characters for real heroism. If you haven’t seen the show yet, beware of spoilers through the end of “Justice,” the mid-season finale that aired in December.

411mania Interviews: Elyse Levesque

Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 03.26.2010

The star of the hit series, Stargate Universe, speaks with 411mania for an exclusive interview on the rest of this season of SGU, going to Comic Con for the first time ever, and starting shooting on the second season of the series.

The hit original SyFy series, Stargate Universe, is back for the rest of the first season with new episodes. Among the ensemble cast is the stunning, lovely, and talented Elyse Levesque as Chloe Armstrong. Chloe was the daughter of a senator and one of the civilians that was stranded on the starship Destiny after the military and civilians were forced to go through the Stargate and were stuck on the ship billions of light years away from earth with very little resources. Earlier this month, we were able to speak with Elyse for an exclusive interview to talk about her work on the show:

A brief excerpt:

Jeffrey Harris: Did you get the chance to go to Comic Con and if you ever did anything like that before with a project you worked on?
Elyse Levesque: Oh God, yeah I went and I've never – I've never done anything like that before in my life. And it was the most insane, amazing experience. I think it's about as close to being a rockstar as it comes. It was so – and I think we all just geeked out totally. Like we were just – Ming-Na and David Blue are such sci-fi fanatics, they just went insane. And the rest of just couldn't help but go crazy with them. It was fairly excited like the energy and people everywhere are so invested in their love for sci-fi and their favorite shows and their characters. It was a blast. And we get to do it all over again this year. I think it will be a really different experience this time around because last year, I think most of the people that came to the panel were fans from the previous shows so a lot of them didn't know who we were with of course the exception of Robert Carlyle, Ming-Na, and a few others so we were kind of flying under the radar. I think it will be a different experience this time around...

Assorted SGU Tidbits! Feeling (King) Crabby! And Somewhat Pig-Headed!

This morning, I met the positively delightful actress who’ll be playing the role of Ginn in season 2. Loved her in Mad Men. Apparently, she’s already worked in Vancouver (most recently on Supernatural), loves the city, and already has plans to hit some of her favorite food spots. After her wardrobe fitting and a visit to hair and make-up of course.

[Could that actress be Sarah Drew? She guest starred in Mad Men, and filmed Supernatural's 'Swap Meat' in January '10 ... or Julie McNiven who also was in Mad Men and portrayed Anna the Angel in Supernatural?]

At lunch today, Paul [Mullie] pointed out that we have a lot of “horse television” experience on the SGU writing staff. Brad [Wright] got his start on Black Stallion, Remi [Aubuchon] and Linda [McGibney] worked on Wildfire, while Carl [Binder] also worked on Black Stallion in addition to spending a few seasons on the equine-friendly set of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. So why, may I ask, hasn’t anyone come up with a good horse-based episode yet? Great question that I, being more of a cartoon jungle animal guy, am unable to answer...

Catching Up With Amanda Tapping And Damian Kindler

Director Martin Wood, Creator Damian Kindler and Amanda Tapping

By Joseph Dilworth Jr.
Published March 23, 2010

Transcription by Katrina King. Second rule of Katrina King is you do NOT talk about Katrina King!

Season Two of the hit Syfy series Sanctuary brought several changes to the show as well as putting our favorite characters through the emotional ringer. Like many viewers, I had a few observations and questions regarding what went on. A few weeks ago I got the opportunity to catch up with Amanda Tapping and Damian Kindler, two of the creative forces behind the show. We talked about what has gone before, teased what is to come and also talked about the foundation the two have set up with Jill Bodie, “Sanctuary For Kids.”

A brief excerpt:

PCZ: And so, going into this third season, you of course have seven more episodes to do. How does that throw your production schedule out of whack?

DK: Well, it’s a real champagne problem, right? I mean, it may play a bit of havoc with the production schedule and all that, but you get to tell some very deep, longer stories, and setup stories, and get some interesting character and story arcs into the show, finally, that make more sense to do with twenty than we could do before with thirteen.

AT: It just means that we have to take more vitamins. And eat better.
(laughter)
DK: Yeah, you need both of those things.

AT: It really does. We need to get more sleep, eat better, and take more vitamins.
DK: And exercise.

AT: And exercise! There’s not enough time!
DK: Nope.

Stargate: Universe's Lou Diamond Phillips - Video: 'Carny' - Airs Mar 27 '10

'Carny' a 2009 made-for-TV movie, starring Stargate: Universe's Lou Diamond Phillips and Alan C. Peterson, Domenic Cuzzocrea, Vlasta Vrana and Simone Elise Girard, repeats Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 7pm on Syfy (US).

From RHI, the movie's synopsis:

When a traveling carnival comes to a rural Nebraska town, the caged attraction everyone is talking about is the alleged Jersey Devil. When the beast escapes, tearing the citizens to shreds, local sheriff Sam Atlas steps up to form a tracking team. But the carnivorous fugitive is only one of Sam's problems. The local pastor, enraged by the death of his son at the hands of the beast, has plans for igniting his own brand of hellfire and revenge.

Caprica's Esai Morales looks into the Adamas' future

In this second part of our exclusive interview with Esai Morales, star of Syfy's Caprica, the actor answers your questions, including how he plays a guy whose future is already known.

In particular, Morales said it's important to set up the character of Battlestar Galactica's William Adama, who is only a boy in Caprica.
"I'm not doing an Edward James Olmos imitation, ... but I do want to show the audience where he got his strength," Morales says.

Watch Caprica Friday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy.

Stargate Universe / Atlantis - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog - MORE SGA Production Artwork

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for March 19, 2010:

A pitiful sight! Production goings-on! Brackets busted! And more from the Atlantis Art Department Archives!

... Got most of the notes for my Resurgence outline (episode 10) and, while I’m still a little leery about the third act, I’m just going to forge ahead. I feel it might be a little short but Brad [Wright] was quick to point out that I thought Incursion would be short – and it turned into a two-parter.

VFX Supervisor Mark Savela came by the offices today to solicit our opinions on the fast-developing new aliens. Paul [Mullie] felt the hands were too large, the fingers too pointy, while my main concern was the potential expressiveness of the face (or, at this point, lack thereof). Mark assured me that they were in the early stages and, as things progressed, they’d be adding layers (ie. musculature and flesh) that will address my concerns.

Second cast read-thru today. It included regulars and a few recurring including that Prison Break veteran I mentioned in a previous entry. Very nice guy – unlike the character he plays on SGU. Or Heroes for that matter...

[NOTE: Could Joe be referring to Robert Knepper? Hmmmm...]

[Update: March 20 '10: Spoiler TV confirms Robert Knepper will have a recurring role in season two of Stargate Universe.]

Writer Takes SG-1 Character Back Through the STARGATE

By Troy Brownfield
posted: 19 March 2010

Brandon Jerwa's no stranger to licensed comics. He's written across the spectrum from "G.I. Joe" to "Battlestar Galactica". Now he gets a chance to put his stamp on the Stargate Universe with Dynamite's initial offering. The first book out of the Stargate stars Vala Mal Doran, the character brought to life onscreen by fan favorite Claudia Black. Jerwa tells us why Vala, what makes her great, and why Jack O'Neill fans should be on board, too.

A brief excerpt:

Newsarama: Out of all of the characters in the Stargate Universe, Vala Mal Doran gets one of the first looks in comics form. What about her is particularly compelling to you?
Brandon Jerwa: How can you not love her? She's snarky, duplicitous, self-centered, easily enraged and somehow still adorable.
