Web-first projects making an impact

By Benjamin Alldritt, North Shore News August 20, 2010

"Early on, someone said to me 'You're not good-looking enough to be a leading man and you're not ugly enough to be a character actor,'" recalls North Vancouver-based actor Ryan Robbins. "I said 'Well I can ugly myself up a little bit but I don't know if I can get any prettier.'"

Happily, that early assessment was well wide of the mark. Robbins has rarely been idle since he got into professional acting, playing a series of character roles and now looking forward to taking on that leading-man mantle.

Robbins met with the North Shore News just after returning from Comic Con in San Diego, where he represented several local television shows -- Sanctuary, Riese and the upcoming Dream Detective -- at the international pop-culture conference.

"It was absolutely bonkers," says Robbins, who plays Henry Foss in Sanctuary and Rand in Riese. "I'm not really used to the getting-recognized thing. But wow, on the panel at Comic Con, you couldn't see the back of the room. I said 'Wow, our little show (Sanctuary) is pretty popular' and someone said 'Yeah, you're in 183 countries...'"

Sanctuary season three premieres on Syfy (US) on Tuesday, September 28 at 10pm -- this season will have 20 episodes!

... Question: I've finally finished the first season of Stargate: Universe, and I'm curious about your thoughts on it (and whether you thought it was worth watching, as I don't remember reading anything about your opinion of it). Stargate: SG-1 was much lighter and had a sense of humor that was usually near the surface, and we'll just pretend Atlantis was a bad dream. However, SG:U seems like an attempt to shoehorn the Stargate mythology into the dark style and brutal sensibilities of Battlestar Galactica. Don't get me wrong, I was entertained by the first season and will keep watching, but it's a departure from what the franchise was, and the melding of the SG mythos with the BSG style results in the proverbial machine that knows all the words but can't quite get the music right (if that makes any sense). However, I can't fault it for providing an unexpected reboot of the franchise, and if I only watched shows as good as BSG, then I wouldn't be watching much. Also, I said I'd watch when it comes back, but I guess that's making a pretty big assumption: Has it been renewed? — Mike
Matt Roush: Yes, it will be back, with the second season starting Sept. 28 — in a new Tuesday time slot, now that Fridays on Syfy have been turned over to wrestling this fall. (Don't get me started.) It's one of my so-far-fruitless goals to catch up with the second half of the Universe season before the new episodes begin. Your reaction of the show feels pretty spot-on to me. There's no question its tone is darker and harsher than the Stargate norm, and I got the sense many franchise fans were turned off by its relentlessly downbeat nature. I'm certainly intrigued by it, but the fact that so many episodes remain unwatched on my DVR tells me that either my priorities are out of whack or it's not a world I'm particularly eager to keep exploring. For now, though, keeping an open mind, and even if I end up jumping into the second season without completely finishing the first, I'll try to give it a shot.

Warehouse 13 - Pop Culture Zoo: Lindsay Wagner Interview

Lindsay Wagner On ‘Warehouse 13′, ‘The Bionic Woman’ And Self-Help

By Joseph Dilworth Jr.
Published August 16, 2010

Transcription provided by Katrina King. Katrina is a bionic writer, except without the bionic parts.

Lindsay Wagner rose to prominence in the 1970s after acclaimed roles on Marcus Welby, MD and The Rockford Files lead to her being cast as Jaime Sommers on The Six Million Dollar Man. Originally written as a one-off character, due to overwhelming positive audience response, Wagner not only returned in a subsequent two-part story, but also starred as Jaime Sommers on the spin-off series The Bionic Woman. Since the series’ cancellation in 1978, Wagner has gone on to co-star with Sylvester Stallone in the film Nighthawks and most recently has appeared in the movies Thicker than Water, Buckaroo: The Movie and Four Extraordinary Women. She has also developed a series of workshops and techniques called “Quiet the Mind & Open the Heart”, which help people study their experiences and changing perspectives and how those have affected their lives and happiness. This week, Lindsay appears on Warehouse 13 and Joe talked her via telephone about her new role.

A brief excerpt:

PCZ: Were you aware of Warehouse 13 prior to getting the role?
LW: Actually, I wasn’t, but I think that’s probably a good sign in reference to my career, because I didn’t know about the Six Million Dollar Man either! That show was huge, just like Warehouse 13 is, so maybe that’s a good karmic thing. I just have been so busy doing other things that I’ve been doing for the last few years that I don’t watch much of anything. But when I mentioned it to my son, I said, “Have you ever heard of this? I got a call from this thing called Warehouse 13?” He goes, “That’s a really cool show!” And I went, “Oh good!” So I pulled it up on the internet, ’cause they were off season, and watched a couple episodes, and I thought that’s really fun! what a great concept! I loved the concept, it’s really fun. The performance is there, the writing … the wit … it’s really wonderful.

Jewel Staite talks about Firefly fights, her dream role and more

By Jewel Staite
on Aug 16, 2010

If you like Jewel Staite as Kaylee from Firefly and Serenity and Dr. Jennifer Keller from Stargate: Atlantis, you'll love the REAL Jewel Staite! That's why we're so pleased she's agreed to join us regularly here at Blastr to answer your questions and share whatever happens to be on her mind.
Hello and welcome to my very first blog for Blastr! I'm absolutely thrilled to be blogging on this site, and even more thrilled that my ramblings will not have to be reduced to 140 characters or less!

However, as you know, we actors need constant inspiration, and so I called upon the creative minds of my Twitter followers (http://www.twitter.com/jewelstaite if you want to join the dark side—and yes, that was a shameless plug, don't judge me) for some juicy questions to answer for my blog. And man, was I ever flooded with the juicy! Since my very first blog can't exactly be 50,000 words (nobody likes a rambler. Oh, wait....), I've only picked 10 to answer for now.

"Will there be a Serenity 2?" did not, sadly, make the list. Because I'm already asked that on a daily basis.

Shall we?

Stargate Atlantis - SciFi and TV Talk: Rachell Luttrell Interview

At SciFi And TV Talk:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Stargate Atlantis' Rachel Luttrell Reminices On Relationships, Going Missing And Being The Queen

When, in the Stargate Atlantis series premiere Rising, the Ancients city is in danger of being destroyed, our heroes use its Stargate to travel to Athos, another planet in the Pegasus Galaxy that, if necessary, they might be able to evacuate to. It is there that they meet Teyla Emmagen, the caring and spirited leader of the Athosian race. After one of her own kind betrays Teyla and the rest of the Athosians along with their human allies to the Wraith, she joins with the new residents of Atlantis to stop this parasitic alien race from once again culling the Pegasus Galaxy and, ultimately, reaching Earth.

As actress Rachel Luttrell grew more and more at ease playing Teyla over Atlantis' five years on the air, her character developed a close bond with her new teammates, many of whom became like family to her. How would Luttrell describe her onscreen relationships with the rest of the Atlantis crew?
"It's funny, but as you were asking that question, and I'm not joking, literally so many faces came into my mind, and the very first one was David Hewlett's [Dr. Rodney McKay]," says the actress. "I loved the relationship that Teyla had with MacKay. It was somewhat irreverent and yet lovable. My character would constantly roll her eyes, even if not physically but sometimes in her demeanor, at McKay, but it was always in a kind of affectionate way..."
