Sally Malcolm is the joint-owner of Fandemonium, along with her husband, Tom, and she is the publisher's Chief Editor. Sally also talks about writing her own Stargate novels and watching Michael Shanks perform "Gift of the Gods," the script Sally wrote for audio book publisher Big Finish.

GW: You mentioned that you work closely with MGM. Can you talk to us about what the normal process is like in submitting a book to MGM, and then how you work with them as the book is being written and is ready to be published?

SM: Sure. The first thing we get [from the author] is a one-page outline that comes to me, and if I like it and think we haven't got a book too similar, I'll ask for a 4,000-word outline of the story, which goes to MGM. They look at that and make sure it ties in with the feel of the show, and hopefully there's not too much of an overlap with upcoming episodes. Although, we have recently had a problem with a book that is going to be published soon by James Swallow -- and it's an excellent book, and we are publishing it and it's a wonderful book -- I'm not going to say what, but there's an element to it which has recently appeared in an episode.

Sabine C. Bauer has been writing fan fiction for some time. When publisher Fandemonium was looking to launch its new Stargate novel series they approached her to kick off the first story. Now with three books released, Sabine couldn't be happier with her growth as a writer.

GateWorld caught up with the author at this year's Gatecon convention in Vancouver, British Columbia. In our video interview, we discuss Bauer's latest Atlantis work, "Mirror, Mirror." We explore her style of writing, the challenge of moving from SG-1 to Atlantis, and realizing her dream of writing professionally.

GW: Now, how many titles have you written for Stargate so far?

SB: Three. I wrote the first one out of the box, "Trial by Fire," I wrote the number seven, which was "Survival of the Fittest," and I've just published my very first Atlantis book, "Mirror, Mirror."

GW: "Mirror, Mirror," which I was joking with Darren in a podcast the other day, it's "The Atlantis Variations", instead of the "Daedalus Variations!"

SB: I guess so, yes! [Laughter] It came out of, oh God, an idea I had years back about space odyssey, if you will, really taking the structure, or not necessarily the structure, but elements of Homers Odyssey, and transplanting it. Which is not an altogether bizarre choice given the gate system, given what can happen if it malfunctions, and OK, the end product is a lot less close to Homer than I thought it might be, because writing aptitude aside, my stories usually start with word one, and then they go wherever the hell they please to go ... I shouldn't say "hell" should I? Heck! [laughter]

Swedish based author Steven Savile has exploded onto the publishing scene the last few years with dozens of works set in the worlds of Doctor Who, Warhammer, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Torchwood, and his own universes. He has now joined Fandemonium to pen a trilogy of Stargate SG-1 novels set in the middle of Season Five.

GateWorld caught up with Steven to ask him about how the novel deal came about.

"It was an interesting time for me personally," the author said. "I'd just finished writing the Primeval novel and come to the realization that I had said everything I had to say about vampires [the Black Library Vampire Wars series] and had no interest in writing my fifth vampire novel in three years. You get a little worried about repeating yourself -- and there's only so many ways to suck neck, after all! Then I heard that Sally Malcolm was looking for new writers for the SG-1 and Atlantis lines. A few e-mails later we were fast friends and a huge idea was spawning..."

Karen Miller, is the author of the bestselling Kingmaker,Kingbreaker trilogy, a couple of Stargate SG-1 novels, and of several more novels in those worlds as well as all new ones to come, as she elucidates in this interview. GFTW: You wrote a media tie in novel for the Stargate SG-1 TV series. Did you have to approach writing this novel differently from your other works? In what way?

KM: "Yes and no. I take the Stargate books very, very seriously. I know there are people out there who think folk who write media tie-ins are hacks without standards, but I utterly refute that claim. I’ve been a fan of the show ever since it started airing, and I consider myself enormously fortunate to be allowed to play in that sandbox, with those characters. I believe I have a huge obligation to do the very best job I can – I owe it to the producers, the actors, the crew and the fans to pour my heart and soul into the Stargate stories I write. And I do. At the end of the day I might come up short, in some fans’ eyes, but if I do it’s not because I didn’t take the work seriously. So in terms of being rigorous in the writing and rewriting process, it’s exactly the same. It’s absolutely not the case of chucking down any old sentence and letting it sit there on the page like suet. I polish and rewrite till the very last gasp!

I do a lot of research. Some of that involves rewatching pertinent episodes (there’s a hardship!) and sometimes it’s regular-style research. I’ve just done my second Stargate novel, Do No Harm, which is out in a few weeks, and I had to do a lot of medical research for that one. I just can’t stress enough – I don’t look at media tie-in work as some kind of poor relation. It’s as valid as any kind of storytelling, in my eyes, and I work as hard at it as I do at my mainstream fantasy novels.

Probably the biggest difference is that with the Stargate novels, you’re working in a shared world with a common frame of reference. So there’s less world-building, less exposition, because the writer and the reader already have an understanding of the environment. So that simplifies the writing process to a certain degree. But to balance that is the complexity of getting the characters right, keeping them true to the characters we see on screen. That’s the biggest challenge, and the most fun."

Interview with Karen Miller...

Karen Miller's latest novel, the first in her new trilogy will be published by Orbit this summer. I've chatted to Karen before about her previous duology, the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series which I really enjoyed. She kindly agreed to let me question her some more, about Empress and other things...




A brief excerpt:

Q: You've recently written a Stargate novel (a series I really need to watch more of at some point...): could you tell us a little about the novel, and how this came about?


KM: "The most recent Stargate novel I wrote was 'Do No Harm'. That's due for publication in May 2008, I believe. Do No Harm is set at the end of season 3 (I'm a super fan of the earlier seasons). It's a stand-alone adventure that also has a connection to one of my all-time favourite episodes ever, A Matter of Time (from season 2, in which we get to learn a few very significant things about Jack O'Neill, and have a tragic ending, which I love!). It also introduces a one-off character from season 7, who for various reasons has become a bit of a fan favourite. I know I loved him, which is why I included him. Anyhow -- Do No Harm is the story of what happens to SG-1 and Doctor Janet Fraiser when they find themselves in the middle of a medical crisis on a planet that Washington deems a high priority target. It's also about Jack and how he has, or hasn't, dealt with what happened in A Matter of Time. It was a lot of fun to write, but it was also very hard, because it involved actual science. There's a reason I write fantasy novels -- I don't do science! So this was a killer. But I think it works, and I think it did me good to really push myself, in terms of the scientific content. Plus I just have the most fun playing in that sandbox, with those characters. I love them."

Synopsis:
