Canadian directors vie for guild award

Directors Guild of Canada honor bestowed in the fall

TORONTO -- David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises"), Denys Arcand ("The Age of Darkness"), Jeremy Podeswa ("Fugitive Pieces") and Kari Skogland ("The Stone Angel") will compete for the best director trophy at the Directors Guild of Canada Awards in the fall, organizers said Monday.

The TV series competition will see Stephen Surjik compete for his work on "Intelligence," Holly Dale for "Durham County," James Marshall with "Smallville" and Martin Wood for "Stargate Atlantis."

The DGC awards will be handed out Nov. 8 in Toronto.

Production on season 5 begins tomorrow. Already! It feels like only three months ago we were sitting around, waiting to find out whether we'd been picked up for another season. No. Wait.

Pleased to hear most of you enjoyed Midway. It kicks off a quartet of heavy hitters that close out our fourth season. What happened to the Athosians? Can Todd the wraith be trusted? What does the future hold for our heroes? The answers may surprise you (and no, I won't be giving it all away in a promo).

Anyway, with shooting underway this week, I'll see what I can do about snapping some non-spoilerific pics for anyone interested. Anyone? Anyone at all?

Imagine if your day job involved throwing your favorite characters from very high piles of boxes. Well, that's what was on James Bamford's work order when it came to shooting `Trio'.

In Stargate Atlantis' latest episode, three of the City's personnel find themselves trapped in what seems to be an impossible situation. Stuck in a disintegrating mining facility, far from home and with no way of contacting help, Carter, McKay and Keller face their most demanding challenge yet.

The episode was also demanding for the production team. Apart from the challenges of building and filming in a tilting set, it featured some very daring stunts of a sort not seen on Stargate Atlantis before. One particularly memorable piece of action required the team to build a precarious construction of wooden boxes and beams, from which Colonel Carter would endure a nasty fall. One of the crew charged with helping make this scene a reality was stunt coordinator James Bamford.

Mr. Mallozzi had...tantalized readers a while back, with information that in the SGA episode, "Trio," Sam would comment on her relationship with a certain gentleman back home in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Alas, due to time constraints, that particular scene was edited from the episode.

However, Mr. Mallozzi did provide a transcript of the scene on his blog tonight:

But, to tide you over, here’s that snipped scene from Trio. A little chat between Carter and Keller as they are knotting up that rope:

Carter: So…you seeing anyone?

Keller: What?

Carter: Around the base, you seeing anyone?

Keller: I dunno…I had a moment with - with this…guy. He’s not exactly easy to read so…I guess the short answer is “no”. You?

Carter: Well, I’m the boss, so I can’t really…

Keller: Right Anyone back home?

Carter: Uhm…

Keller: Un-huh, I thought so. Give it up.

Carter: Well, it’s complicated.

Keller: Show me a relationship that isn’t.

Carter: He’s in Washington…I’m here.

Keller: Ouch. Long distance relationship.

Carter: He’s going to retire soon, so maybe -

Keller: Really! Retire? So…an older man, huh?

Carter: Not that much older.

Keller: Washington, older man…is he like a Senator or something? Someone famous? Would I know him?

Carter: Probably not.

It's called Stargate Titanic: The Musical. And it's specifically for small town dinner theater. We just started writing and singing and dancing about the set.
