Stargate Atlantis / SG-1 - Hey, Nielsen!

The Nielsen Company has launched a new endeavor, with a new web site:

You can "rate" each series, using a scale of -5 intense dislike through 0 for neutral up to +4 intense like. (This is at the top of the page, on the left hand side -- just to the left of the series title.)

Currently, SGA is rated with a 470 and SG1 with a 27.

Ratings Company Launches Hey! Nielsen Web Site

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 9/24/2007 8:18:00 AM

Nielsen Co. Monday began the public beta testing of Hey! Nielsen, an online social-network site for pop-culture enthusiasts who are eager to make their voices heard to Nielsen clients and other entertainment decision-makers.

Nielsen is hoping that Hey! Nielsen, developed with Affinitive, could be an effective mechanism for Nielsen to explore – and define – a wide variety of experimental media and marketing research.

Although the site is still under test and development, users will be able to participate in the site's main functions during this test period.

Members will be able to voice opinions and grade their favorite music, TV show or movie. These ratings and opinions will be available to other members, who can then respond with their own views.

**snippage**

Nielsen said members can contribute to the Hey! Nielsen Score, which will be a measurement system for the "buzz" on a star, TV show, movie and other entertainment property. The Hey! Nielsen Score is a combination of a number of factors including users' opinions and ratings on the site.

LEADER'S LEGACY

GateWorld Talks With Torri Higginson

She has lighted a path as Atlantis's caretaker for three years. Now, in the season to come, Dr. Elizabeth Weir will make the greatest sacrifice of all. GateWorld spoke with the woman who could tell us all about it. It is our privilege to bring you another interview with Torri Higginson.

Much like McGillion as Dr. Carson Beckett, the news of Higginson's departure from series regular was a shock to many fans. In this candid interview, Torri tells GateWorld why she feels this has happened, and why she refuses to put all the blame on the show runners. She talks about highlight episodes from Season Three, teases us of what's to come, and wholeheartedly expresses her love to her fans.

GateWorld's interview with Torri Higginson has been made available to you in MP3 format for easy listening. It is over 23 minutes long. Prefer not to listen? We've also transcribed it [at the site]!

All About 'Stargate Atlantis' Season Four

With the premiere of "Stargate Atlantis" coming up Friday, I recently got to chat with executive producer Joseph Mallozzi about subjects ranging from the Wraith to the new additions to the cast to some of the plots we'll be seeing.

Here's an edited, spoiler-filled transcript. Enjoy!

Raoul: So Joe, I'm really curious to hear more of what you've got going on this season.

Joseph Mallozzi: Just in general?

Raoul: Let's start with in general and then we can talk more specifically.

JM: Coming off season three, we got our pickup a lot earlier than in previous seasons, just because Sci Fi canceled "SG-1." It also gave us time to sort of get a leg up on planning Season Four. On the creative side, Season Four has been very, I guess, rewarding in the types of stories we've been able to tell, the kinds of character relationships we've been able to explore simply because we got that early pickup and were able to spend more time on the stories.

And because we're not producing "SG-1," we're not producing 40 hours of television. We could concentrate on those 20 episodes of Season Four and really, really, really work on them. I guess more than any other seasons, we've got various throughlines that will run through the various episodes, bits and pieces here and there planted in one episode, developed in another episode that come to fruition in another episode, storylines that intersect and dovetail at the end of the season.

SCI FI ORDERS NEW SEASONS OF HITS 'EUREKA' AND 'DESTINATION TRUTH'

Published: September 27, 2007

NEW YORK — September 27, 2007 — SCI FI Channel has greenlit production on a third season of its most-watched Original Series Eureka, ordering 13 new hours of the dramedy. SCI FI is also renewing its investigative reality hit Destination Truth for a second season, it was announced today by Mark Stern, SCI FI Channel's Executive Vice President of Original Programming.

Eureka will begin production on a third season in Vancouver early next year for a summer 2008 premiere. The second season of Destination Truth is also slated to premiere in 2008 with six exciting new episodes.

"Eureka rose to an even higher creative level in its sophomore season, combining entertaining, compelling stories with deeper character development and great cast chemistry. And clearly the audience noticed, bringing millions of new viewers to the Channel," said Mark Stern. "Destination Truth with Josh Gates proved to be a great addition to our Wednesday night lineup and the perfect companion piece for Ghost Hunters."

In keeping with SCI FI's mission to broaden the scope and appeal of its programming roster, Eureka is a relatable, earth-based dramedy credited with bringing in over 3 million new viewers to the Channel in its second season alone. The series premiere on July 18, 2006 broke Channel records and remains the highest rated series telecast in SCI FI history. Eureka continued to grow in its second season, achieving season high household and key demo ratings with its August 28th episode (2.1 HH, 1,654,000 adults 25-54).

Eureka seems like any other cozy Pacific Northwest town, but is actually a secret community of geniuses assembled by the government to conduct top-secret research. The result is a place where anything imaginable can happen… and does. Returning for a third season are stars Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson, Joe Morton, Jordan Hinson and Ed Quinn and executive producers Jaime Paglia and Charlie Craig. Eureka is a SCI FI Channel presentation and is produced and distributed by Universal Media Studios.

Now, where were we?

Oh yes, I remember. Stargate SG-1 aired its episodic finale, and on Stargate Atlantis you were left high and dry wondering about the fate of our fearless intergalactic explorers after a death-defying escape from the formidable power of the Replicators. Sorry, had to jog my addled memory, as so much time has passed since I last spilled the beans to you about our goings on here in Burnaby, BC. Well, rest assured, the Stargate machine keeps churning, and as long as you keep watching, it will continue to do so.

And today is a good day to bring back the blog. The production office is humming. I just saw Will Waring prepping, and chatted with Andy Mikita (who was boasting about the bottle of scotch Joe Flanigan gave him for zooming through a 10 page day). Earlier today I was in Rob Cooper's office with all the other writers talking about all the new network premieres. So, here we are. And we're actually in the tail end of our production season. "Outcast", the second last episode of the 4th season of Atlantis, is now shooting. On deck is our finale, entitled "The Last Man".

But what you really want to know about is the first episode of season 4, which airs tomorrow night, entitled "Adrift." Don't you?...

Spare the Rod!

Last seen blasting off into Space with the rest of the Atlantis team, the fourth season brings many new challenges for David Hewlett's Dr Rodney McKay...

**snippage**

"Life is good," Hewlett smiles. "Life is very, very good. This whole experience, it's one of those things where I had no idea how big the whole thing was. On SG-1, when I was a guest star, I only saw a portion of the episodes, especially at first. I mean, you get the whole script and you read the whole thing, but you're only a small part of the whole storyline. Basically it's your job to set everyone up to look smart. So when you go from a character actor to one of the leads, all of a sudden you're everywhere and the scope of the job becomes so much bigger. Even if you don't have scenes, you're still there. And it became so much of a bigger job than I expected. But it's amazing. You go on the ride, you do the best you can and you have as much fun as you can with the character and the people around you. And that's what I have tried to do. For a nerd like me, it's a dream come true."

ASK MATT

Matt Roush

Monday, September 24

**major snippage**

Question: What is your take on the cast changes on Stargate Atlantis? I'm personally pretty happy that SG-1's Amanda Tapping is making the trip to Atlantis. It seemed pretty inevitable: Someone was going to cross over after Torri Higginson's role was minimized. Anyway, as an objective party who's never been all that entrenched in the series, what is your opinion? Also, have you heard the theory that Higginson wanted out of her contract?

— C.N.

Matt Roush: I honestly don't know the circumstances of this cast change, but churn like this is inevitable on just about any long-running show — although experience has told me that any time a major change happens on a cult sci-fi/fantasy series, there will be some outcry. (Remember the fuss when Michael Shanks left SG-1 for a season? I certainly do!) From where I sit, as a detached observer who never got deeply involved in either series (they're enjoyable but, to me, not habit-forming), this all makes perfect sense. I think of Worf migrating from Star Trek: The Next Generation to its spin-off Deep Space Nine after TNG went off the air. Enhancing the spin-off with a popular character from the mother ship is TV 101. Since it doesn't look like the overall Stargate franchise is going away anytime soon, this should also serve to appease SG-1 fans who wished that show could've last forever.

Stargate Atlantis - GateWorld: Interview with Jewel Staite

From GateWorld:

http://www.gateworld.net/interviews/staite_of_change.shtml

(Please follow the link for the complete interview at GateWorld.)

STAITE OF CHANGE

With a new season of Stargate Atlantis about to get under way, GateWorld sent our own newcomer, Chad Colvin, to sit down with the show's newest recurring cast member, Jewel Staite. A veteran of the science fiction genre thanks to her year as Firefly's darling engineer Kaylee, Jewel joins the Atlantis expedition as Dr. Jennifer Keller.

It's actually not her first time in the Stargate universe: Back in Atlantis's second season, Jewel played the Wraith girl Ellia ("Instinct"). The producers were hesitant to waste such a great actress on a one-off, but quickly realized they could bring her back without the heavy prosthetics.

In the interview Jewel discusses her sci-fi roots, filling the place of a beloved character (Dr. Carson Beckett), and her favorite episodes from the upcoming season. She also talks about working with her new cast mates, notably Amanda Tapping and Rachel Luttrell.

Beware of minor spoilers for Season Four of Atlantis in this interview, as well as a big one for Season Three's "Sunday" -- and for last May's third season finale of LOST. The fourth season of Stargate Atlantis premieres Friday, September 28 at 10 p.m. (Eastern/Pacific) on SCI FI Channel!

A brief excerpt:

GW: We saw briefly in "First Strike" some interaction between Keller and Dr. Weir. Can you give us any insight into her working relationships with any of the other crew members? Colonel Carter? McKay? Ronon and Teyla?

JS: Carter and Keller have a connection because they're both new and proving themselves a little bit. In the episode we're filming now, "Trio," they actually become friends. They're each out of their comfort zones and they start to open up about their personal lives, which is a lot of fun.

Amanda Tapping is hilarious, and I have a very tough time looking her in the eye during a scene without laughing. McKay and Keller have a good-natured argument every once in a while, but they have a mutual respect for each other, too. There's definitely a friendship developing there.

Teyla and Keller's relationship has a chance to develop a lot in the episode "Missing." They find themselves in some dire situations there and have no choice but to bond. And Rachel Luttrell and I get along ridiculously well.

As far as Ronon goes, I think it's safe to say Keller has a wee bit of a crush on him. Because she has, you know ... eyes.

...From there, it was a mere five minute walk to the trucks and the P.A. who pointed us toward director Andy Mikita's location - and another ten minute walk across the soggy, squelching grounds to where they were setting up the first shot. As per script:

"EXT. PARK - DAY

Nancy strolls up to a park bench. Sheppard is there waiting. He stands to greet her."

Well, not exactly as per script. It was raining and while the inclement weather wouldn't change the dialogue, it did pose a problem for the EXT. WASHINGTON D.C. - DAY establishing shot that preceded the scene. No matter. After a few seconds of discussion, we decided to use a dissolve instead to convey the time cut. The rain also influenced how the scene was to be shot. I'm sure that when Alan envisioned the scene, he didn't imagine Sheppard and his ex-wife holding umbrellas. And yet it was pouring rain on the day. But umbrellas led to another problem - obscuring our actors unless they held them up, clear of their faces, in aerial-Poppinesque less-than-natural positions. After more discussion, and some re-positioning, the decision was made to go with the umbrellas. We ran through the dialogue a couple of times and, finally, Andy yelled action. We got one shot in at which point Joe threw a look back at the camera: "The rains letting up. Want to try it without umbrellas?" More discussion. Yet another executive decision is reached. We're going without the umbrellas!

Richard Dean Anderson to launch Halo 3 in Dublin; Record breaking attempt planned

Actor Richard Dean Anderson is to launch Halo 3 in Dublin on Tuesday, forming one of the main elements of Microsoft's Irish high-profile release of the highly anticipated Xbox 360 game.

News that the actor, most famous for playing MacGyver and more recently Jack O'Neill on Stargate SG-1, will launch the game was confirmed this evening to Games Toaster by a Microsoft spokesperson.

However, his visit to Dublin is still somewhat shrouded in mystery as there is still little detail of Anderson's visit

Let's head over to the mailbag and anger a few fans -

Stressed and Depressed writes: "Can you reasure a stressed out SGA fan that those coming over are vital to plot lines, please? I'm Concerned Atlantis fan writes: "I love the show, and understand the need to shake things up, and have a 'soft re-set', but, please, please Joe, don't make Atlantis into a playround for sundry SG1
characters."

Answer: First of all, I have no idea what is meant by "a soft re-set". Secondly, Atlantis and its characters will always be the main focus and driving force of the show. However, it makes sense for some crossover to occur because both shows exist within the same franchise, the same universe, the same timeframe. It's not like we're crossing The Sopranos with Two and a Half Men.

Mary Beth writes: "What kind of effect would a script writer strike have on SGA?"

Answer: None.

Stargate Atlantis- David Hewlett Interview

By Kyle Braun

" I think we're more sci-fi for the non-sci-fi people, if that makes sense. You want to be careful with a show like this that it doesn't become too cheerful, otherwise you lose that peril." -David Hewlett

Not only has David Hewlett been helping to save an alien civilization on Stargate Atlantis, he's also found time to write and direct a feature film during the hiatus. Instead of playing Dr. Rodney McKay, who has been using his genius to aid in the preservation of Atlantis, Hewlett used his downtime to write, direct and star in A Dog's Breakfast. While you can check out the details on http://www.adogsbreakfastmovie.com, you can also look forward to seeing Hewlett on the fourth season of Atlantis, which kicks off on September 28. We tracked down David while he was running around Vancouver to talk about his directorial debut and what's up with the new season of Stargate Atlantis.

A brief excerpt:

UGO: Was it easy to get the Stargate crew to work for 14 days?

DAVID: Surprisingly, yes. Paul I kind of knew he'd have nothing else to do. He pretends to have a life, and it's very sad, so I pretty well knew we had him. Kate [Hewlett] was really hard to get a hold of, because she's got a writing/acting career herself, so timing her stuff was harder, and also Paul knew about it from the beginning. I told him, "Look, we're writing something for you. Are you going to be available during the hiatus?" and he said yes. He actually put money into the film as well. As I put it to him, "So you're paying me to hire you?"

Sanctuary - The Province: Local series kicks off Vidfest

Local series kicks off Vidfest

Four hours of Sanctuary on deck

Glen Schaefer, The Province

Published: Thursday, September 20, 2007

That Sunset Boulevard line, where the aging actress laments that the pictures got small, seems prophetic more than 50 years later.

An explosion of digital media -- including video games, digital animation and web-based visual content -- is what propels Vidfest, Vancouver's annual industry conference for creators and producers of the bits that go into those and other digital media. Vidfest has teamed with the Vancouver International Film Festival this year for an event that precedes next week's start of the larger festival. Vidfest runs from Saturday to next Tuesday at the Vancouver International Film Centre.

The event includes international business matchmaking, trend-spotting sessions, a recruiting fair, creative seminars -- and glimpses of the digital picture so far.

A highlight will be a marathon four-hour screening of the Vancouver-made, web-based sci-fi series Sanctuary. Conceived by Martin Wood and Damian Kindler, who were part of the braintrust behind the Vancouver-produced Stargate: SG -1, the web series stars Stargate alum Amanda Tapping as a seemingly immortal doctor who cares for a menagerie of creatures -- werewolves, mermaids, spooky little boys -- while battling across time with Jack the Ripper. The actors did their work on bare sets, with digital backgrounds added later, and the series was offered by subscription on the web. The story is pulpy comic-book stuff, and the production's digital seams show every once in a while, but it's an early step toward what could be a new model for delivering small-screen stories. The Sanctuary screening starts at 6 p.m. Sunday.

"They say, `Heavy is the head that wears the crown.' Sam has the mantel of looking after everyone on this base. For the first time in her career and in her life she's in charge of a group of people, but my character isn't focusing a great deal on the in charge part. By that I mean she's not all like, `Rah, rah, rah, I'm your new leader.' It's more a case of, `OK, I'm responsible for these people's lives, and along with having to make the right decisions, I also have to be aware of the fact that people are going to be following my orders, which means they've got to be the right orders.

We watched the Prod cuts of Midway and Harmony this morning. Fantastic episodes both. Then, this afternoon, we had an extra special guest drop by for a visit. Bob Picardo had swung by for his costume fitting AND to drop off a gift for the pugs, compliments of him and his lovely wife Linda (Check out Bony Barney - the perfect
Halloween accessory for those nervous dogs!) Bob is, of course, in town to shoot his scenes for the big season finale, The Last Man, and came up with a fun idea regarding the outfit Woolsey should be wearing in this episode. It won't be his standard suit.

Today's pics are compliments of Lawren Bancroft-Wilson: a photo diary of Lulu's day at the office which includes a terrific snap of Carl discovering just how sharp her little teeth are.

Let's wade through the various angry posts and find some questions or comments to field -

Elizabeth writes: " 1) Is Cassie or Jack mentioned in S4 of Atlantis? 2) Why isn't Carter getting the ATA gene? Is the fact that Carter was a Tokra host going to addressed in S4 of Atlantis? 3) Any alternate reality/time travel/people from the future stories coming up?"

Answers: 1) No comment. 2) Given that we've had the gene therapy since season one of Atlantis, and given that SG-1 has come across Ancient tech in the Milky Way galaxy, then it stands to reason that Carter would have already underwent the gene therapy. If that's the case, and she doesn't have the active gene, then clearly the therapy
failed. In answer to the second question - no. 3) No comment.

Danielle writes: "Will any other characters from SG-1 besides Teal'c and Sam will be seen on Atlantis? Vala perhaps? Maybe Daniel? Cameron even?"

Answer: Not in season four. Although if we do get a fifth season pick up, it would make a lot of sense to have Daniel Jackson drop by for a visit. And, if Ben's not too busy, it would be nice to have Cam drop by at some point as well.

Zabadoo writes: " 1.)Will there be any three-parters in the same vein as Reckoning/Threads, The Siege, or Avalon/Origin this season? 2.) Will Martin Gero be writing any McKay-centric episodes this season? 3.)Any chance of getting O'Neill in the fifth season of Atlantis? 4.) Any chance of getting Daniel and O'Neill coming to Atlantis in the same episode next season? 5.)Any Ford ideas as of late?"

Answers: 1) This Mortal Coil, Be All My Sins Remember'd, and Spoils of War are tenuously-linked three-parters. 2) Miller's Crossing. 3) I don't know. 4) If we get the pick-up, getting Daniel on Atlantis will be a priority. 5) None.

**snippage**

Emily writes: "Will the fact that Sheppard obviously has an Elf gene ever come in to play this season?"

Answer: We're saving this revelation for the big stick-fighting three-parter.

Well, given the flash hailstorm that pounded Burnaby today (catching Marty G. and I on our way to post to finish cutting Harmony) I think I'll declare Summer officially over. Though, to be fair, it seems as though it slipped out the back several weeks ago when no one was looking. Now, we can look forward to rainy days, early nights, and that great grey limbo known as the end of season hiatus. Atlantis premieres in less than two weeks and despite the fact that the latest research suggests DVR use is impacting our ratings by as much as 22%, I'm feeling confident. Both SciFi and MGM are gearing up their promotion machines and the episodes we`ve finished are looking great.

Yep. Confident. Not overly, but quietly so. Still, just in case, I'd like each of you to find a friend with a Nielsen box and go watch the show at their place. Make it worth their while. Bring cookies (preferably the chewy kind without raisins)!

Oh, and speaking of promotions, I see by my site meter stats that this blog is slowly inching toward its 500 000th visit. Wow, we've come a long way from last December when I would average 25-50 visits a day, most of them me checking in to find out whether anyone had left me a comment. Now, it's more like 4 000+. And I'd like to thank the following for making it happen: Aloysius P. Hazzencockle, Percival H. Lintmuffin, Baron Destructo, Margaret Quibble, Agent Wexler, Merton Castrati, Helena Krumpett Fullbottom, and, of course, Cookie Monster for their tireless work and significant contributions.

Oh, and the fans. To mark the 250 000th visit, I gave away a box of unofficial flocking from the set of Stargate Continuum. That'll be hard to top that, but I'll see what I can come up with in the coming week. Damn. I now regret throwing out those gelatinous red stick-on pustules that Colonel Vaselov was stricken with in Lockdown. Hmmm. Maybe a vial of sand from the season finale, The Last Man, would be
appropriate. Or maybe a French Bulldog.

**snippage**

In closing, I'd like to echo Paul's sentiments and sincerely hope O.J. can hunt down the real Casino robber.

Over to the Q&A -

Tanya writes: "Is there any moments where she [Carter] will feel vulnerable...or guilty?"

Answer: Yep.

**snippage**

Morjana writes: "Would you happen to know how many episodes Dr. Z will be in this year?"

Answer: Sorry, I don't have the exact episode count. However, episode count aside, Zelenka will be featured more this season than any other.

**snippage**

Answer: I'll respond in English. The reason why you see more "spec" fiction than science fiction on television is because, yes, science fiction is prohibitively more expensive. It is also considered a very narrow genre that only appeals to a certain audience whereas speculative fiction shows (like Heroes and the upcoming Moonlight) offer a broader audience appeal.

**snippage**

Anonymous #1 writes: "As much as you might dis like Creation versus GateCon. Would you show up to the con for the Fans sake? or the Gate World dinner?"

Answer: GateCon? Sure.

...I did find time to swing by set where the gals were cabled up and making like stage version Peter Pans. It's nice to see that Amanda has seemingly conquered her fear of heights - at least for the duration of this episode. Maybe I CAN get her [to] wrestle that alligator in the finale. And for all those interested, Harmony is

She will also kick Zelenka on two separate occasions. 4) Although we are only producing 20 episodes this season, 21 of them will be McKay-centered episodes. 5) No. The ones pictured on my blog are on loan to me. 6) 2007 sounds like a pretty good year. 7) Not bad.
