Torchwood - Spacecast SpaceBlog: John Barrowman Interview

From Canada's Space Channel's SpaceBlog:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

A park bench interview with Torchwood star John Barrowman

NATASHA ELOI REPORTS

Thursday, July 17, 2008 16:11

...As suave, dashing, enigmatic, charming and matinee handsome as he [John Barrowman] is on TV; he is even more so in person. Yeah, let's say it wasn't one of my most difficult interviews to do.

Now, I love both Doctor Who and Torchwood but I admitted to John that I prefer his portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood rather than Doctor Who. The character just seems to be more refined and developed. Mind you he's still as saucy and sexy as he is in Doctor Who but with a little extra confidence and punch in Torchwood.

Since SPACE won't be airing any of the first season of Torchwood or any of Doctor Who episodes, I naturally had to ask John to give a little background on the show - who the members of the agency are, their very 'interesting' interaction with one another and how he feels playing the role of Captain Jack Harkness. Jack is probably the first omnisexual male lead to ever be played on television.

**snippage**

Space is airing two back-to-back second season episodes of Torchwood, starting August 8 at 9 p.m. ET. It will be running regularly on Space at 10 p.m. ET on Fridays starting at August 15.

Some Idle Chatter With "The Ed"

Thursday, June 19, 2008 16:52

So Edward James Olmos and I were talking on the phone the other day. Really, how many times will I get to say that in my life?!

Okay, anyone who watches HypaSpace religiously (and if you don't then SHAME ON YOU) knows that we've had exclusive interviews each week with the cast of Battlestar Galactica. True, they've been phoners but I emphasize the word "exclusive"!

Every week since the beginning of season four, we've chatted with which ever BSG cast member was featured prominently in that week's show. We've had James Callis, Jamie Bamber, and Grace Park just to name a few.

This week EJO gave us a ringy-ding, which is just insanely cool to me. That said, I do try to maintain a certain amount of professional decorum, basically attempting not to sound like a gushing twelve year-old girl. I was making mental notes as Edward commented on last week's episode, "Revelations", thinking about what a great clip he was giving us and how well it would work for this week's HypaSpace. As he spoke, however, voices coming from the background on his end of the line were getting louder and louder. So much so, the camera person grabbed my attention.

**snippage**

And now to add to the excitement, guess who's sitting in our office right now? The one and only Nicki Clyne, who, I must say, is also awesome! She's getting ready to host this week's edition of HypaSpace, airing Friday at 7pm. Immediately following that is Fandom Forum: Battlestar Galactica at 7:30, and like I said before, if you miss it, SHAME ON YOU!

Marc Guggenheim / Eli Stone - Video: SpaceBlog Interview

Eli's coming back (and other "soft" SciFi)

REPORT BY MARK ASKWITH

Thursday, May 15, 2008 16:10

I am a big fan of 'soft' Science Fiction- movies like Run Lola Run, Sliding Doors, and The Prestige. There have been a few attempts to translate soft sf into tv- Journeyman, Pushing Daisies, and New Amsterdam. You could even argue that Lost is a further example of the genre. Some have even suggested that The West Wing was an alternate world were a Democrat was elected instead of a Republican...

Last year a new show called Eli Stone debuted, and while it isn't obvious, I think it's a soft SF show. While the tv blurb made it sound as if it was another show about lawyers, I recognized the name of one of the creators- Marc Guggenheim. Marc wrote a Wolverine comic book illustrated by Howard Chaykin, and he's currently writing Young X-Men. Marc co-created Eli Stone, and is one of the writers and Executive Producers of the show.

Eli Stone is a lawyer, but he has an inoperable brain tumour, and he has strange visions (the most memorable of these include singer George Michael!), and we soon realize that Eli could be a modern day prophet.

Today ABC announced that despite low ratings Eli Stone will return for a second season! I'm thrilled for Marc, and the season one cliffhanger left a lot on the table (as it were), I'm glad to see that the show was renewed.

I interviewed Marc a few weeks ago at the New York Comic Con, and I asked him about the very 'genre' feel of the show.
