September 18, 2008: Saying Goodbye to SGA, Looking Forward to SGU

Jason Momoa (Ronon Dex), Sharon Taylor (Amelia Banks) and Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey)

...Well, yesterday was the final day of shooting for many of our regular and recurring actors: Rachel Luttrell, Jewel Staite, Jason Momoa, David Hewlett, Kavan Smith, Sharon Taylor, and Chuck Campbell. Today, marks Bob Picardo last day with us. Joe Flanigan heads to Vegas next week where he will complete filming on Vegas, and the series, alongside guest stars Neil Jackson, Steve Schirripa (The Soprano's Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri), and Frank Vincent (The Soprano's Frank Leotardo). A bittersweet time for all; me in particular. Bitter in that it's been a great five years and I will sincerely miss the show and the many wonderful people who made it all happen. Sweet in that I like to sleep in.

1st AD Alex Pappas, writers Alan McCullough and Carl Binder

To those of you commenting on yesterday's video and those who skipped the video because they thought it would be depressing - the video was intended to be tongue in cheek. Terry is not really packing up my office (although the part about her wanting to move in is true). While I will be cleaning up, I won't be moving out. Paul and I have a movie to write. As for our involvement in SGU [Stargate: Universe] - still too early to say anything specific regarding our participation in the spin-off, but I'm sure we'll all be contributing in some capacity.

Paul McGillion (Dr. Carson Beckett)

Speaking of SGU, I notice that much of the reaction to the character breakdowns has been negative. While I respect everyone's right to express their opinions, I'd suggest holding off on making a final decision on the show until you've actually seen it. Last week, Brad pitched us the series and its first five episodes and, I have to say, it's a far cry from the shallow confection many fans are imagining. In
fact, in many ways, it's a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction. It's a series that will delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran. In spite of what the indicators may
suggest, this will definitely not be a Voyager 90210. The assortment of characters that make up the character breakdown are certainly an atypical collection of heroes, far-removed from the skilled likes of Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, John Sheppard, and Rodney McKay - but there's a damn good reason for that. Can't say more but suffice it to say I have a feeling this show will pleasantly surprise a lot of people...

Stargate Atlantis / SG1 - TV Guide: Michael Shanks in 'First Contact'

From the print TV Guide, September 22-28 '08 edition, page 52:

HIGHLIGHTS

STARGATE ATLANTIS

Friday (Sept. 26) 10/9C, SciFi

Q&A Michael Shanks

Since Stargate SG-1 closed its portal, Michael Shanks had popped up on such non sci-fi shows as 24 and Burn Notice. Tonight he reprises his role as archaeologist Daniel on Atlantis. -- Ileane Rudolph

Q. What's Daniel doing on Atlantis?
MS: "I kept bugging the producers...and they wrote a story where he comes to find a secret lab that contains important technology. Then a batch of unexpected villains show up. Let's just say, Daniel has a history with them."

Q. Daniel has to work with the annoying Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett). Producer Joe Mallozzi says you two were like Abbott and Costello.
MS: [Laughs] "David's very good at the rhythmic gymnastics of our banter. David and I are such fast talkers that they had to write more than six extra pages in the episode!"

Q. Following your gig as a good-guy scholar, you played a traitor on 24 and now you're Victor, a scary thug on Burn Notice. Why?
MS: "After playing the Boy Scout for as many years as I did, it's fun to sink your teeth into some over-the-top villains. We'll learn about Victor's true agenda when he returns in early '09."

Q. What else have you been working on?
MS: "The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon, a movie for SciFi Channel with Shannen Doherty. I play a reluctant Indiana Jones character. Everyone on the planet is aware of Shannen's reputation, but she was wonderful."

Supernatural and Sanctuary tackle the Big Bads

Susan Young, Sep 18, 2008

For someone who has been to hell and back, Dean Winchester is looking mighty fine.

When last we saw the self-proclaimed smart brother, he was being dragged down into the devil's lair after selling his soul to save his brother Sam. Chest ripped open by the hounds of hell, things weren't looking good for our boy. Jump forward four months, and he's clawing through a pine box before digging his way out of a grave. He emerges with a big, red handprint on his shoulder marking his savage rescue from Hades' halls -- and we viewers have more than a few questions about how he escaped and why he can't remember much about his days down under.

Supernatural pops back up on the CW schedule on Thursday (9 p.m.), right after the series premiere of Smallville. Brothers Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam (Jared Padalecki) team up to fight the forces of evil, with their trusty hunter pal and closest-thing-to-a-father-since-dad-was-offed-by-a-demon Bobby (Jim Beaver).

**snippage**

While Supernatural has some cool special effects, the new series Sanctuary, which airs October 3 (9 p.m.) on the SciFi Channel, takes it to a whole new level with green screen sets and a production that comes out of Sin City and 300.

The technology allows the sets to take on a hyper-reality feel, but there's also a slight disconnect with the actors. Some reactions seem more stilted than with the more easy-going vibe out of Supernatural. The two-hour premiere looks promising, yet doesn't have that instant connect that Supernatural had from day one with relatable characters and snappy dialogue.

Sanctuary has a concept and a style that takes front-and-center priority. We would have liked a little more personality to the characters, which may evolve later after the shiny wears off of the new tech toys.

**snippage**

This series started out more than a year ago as internet webisodes, where we were introduced to Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a scientist modeled after Jack the Ripper. The 157-year-old doctor operates Sanctuary with the help of her new recruit Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), while her tough, beautiful daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup) and tech whiz Henry (Ryan Robbins) dedicate their lives to studying and protecting odd and terrifying creatures that lurk in the shadows.

Some monsters are hideous, others look like everyday people though they may be the most dangerous of all. Case in point is Magnus' nemesis John Druitt played by Christopher Heyerdahl (Stargate Atlantis).
