GateWorld Talks With Kavan Smith

It has been over a year since GateWorld last chatted with Kavan Smith about his role as Major E. Lorne on Stargate Atlantis. The character has remained the steady go-to guy in the absence of Colonel Sheppard, and Smith couldn't be happier.



GateWorld's Chad Colvin recently caught up with the actor at Creation Entertainment's 2007 Stargate Convention in Vancouver. Kavan talks about recent updates to the character, relishing in moments where Lorne's personal life is explored. He also reveals some of his favorite moments from Season Four, such as a particular scene between he and David Hewlett in "The Last Man."

Director Martin Wood discusses the filming of Stargate Atlantis' tempestuous fourth-season finale, `The Last Man'.

A brief excerpt:


Director Martin Wood, charged with bringing the episode to the screen,
was himself bowled over by the concept.

"When I first picked it up I thought, `Oh, this is a Sheppard story,'" he recalls. "Then as I read on I went, `No, it's not, it's a Sheppard and McKay story. There's a lot of McKay in this.' And then as I kept reading I thought, `This is really cool because it looks on the face of it to be one story - it looks like it's about this last man, but it's actually about the two last men.' The fact that one of them is a hologram notwithstanding, it's about two of our heroes. I really thought it was interesting because it wasn't immediately obvious that our team was in jeopardy. One person was in jeopardy and then a second person – but then you realize that the team has gone."

A brief excerpt:

The Stargate franchise has always handled `time travel' in a highly original way. Take Stargate SG-1's `1969', for example, which saw the team catapulted back in time thanks to an rogue sunspot; or `Moebius', which forced them to live out their lives after becoming stranded in Ancient Egypt, at least until their other selves could right the balance. Stargate Atlantis has also had its own share of out-of-time
encounters – `Before I Sleep' for one, which saw Doctor Weir have a strange experience with an older self.
