Sanctuary - Show Patrol: Amanda Tapping Video Interview

Courtesy of Chicago Now's Show Patrol (Chicago, IL):

SDCC 2010 exclusive: Amanda Tapping previews 'Sanctuary' Season 3

by Curt Wagner on 07.27.10

Helen Magnus, Will Zimmerman, Henry Foss, Kate Freelander and the Big Guy will go on an "epic journey" in Season 3 of "Sanctuary."

Epic is really the only way the Syfy series can go after the extraordinary cliffhanger that ended Season 2: Big Bertha set off a series of giant tidal waves that could flood the world.

"It's quite mysterious actually what happens," producer-star and sometimes director Amanda Tapping told me at San Diego Comic Con, saying they will take some time to figure out the situation, "because we don't actually understand what happened."

The resolution of the Big Bertha fallout is only one of a few major story arcs this season, which consists of 20 episodes instead of just 13 like the first two seasons. It's an epic season indeed for the groundbreaking series.

Tapping and I sat down for a chat after the "Sanctuary" panel where a funny Season 2 recap/Season 3 preview was presented, and it was also announced that Polly Walker from "Caprica" will guest star on "Sanctuary."

Enjoy the two-part interview with Tapping and the preview, and watch for my exclusive interviews with Robin Dunne and Ryan Robbins.

SDCC 2010 EXCLUSIVE: Sanctuary Season 3 Cast Interviews

July 28th, 2010

One of Syfy's hit series is about to get bigger and better for its upcoming third season. We reported back in December that Syfy handed out a third-season order to Sanctuary, which will return to the Syfy airwaves later this year. The show was given a 20-episode order (as opposed to the first two seasons' 13-episode orders) and the show has returned to San Diego for Comic-Con to promote the popular series. We spoke to stars Amanda Tapping (Helen Magnus), Ryan Robbins (Henry Foss) along with executive producer Damian Kindler at the Con.

Sanctuary, which also stars Robin Dunne, Christopher Heyerdahl, Emilie Ullerup and Agam Darshi, will return to the SyFy network this fall, airing on Friday nights.

Stargate Atlantis' David Hewlett Reminisces About "Grace Under Pressure"

In the fifth season Stargate SG-1 episode 48 Hours, Dr. Rodney McKay is temporarily assigned to Stargate Command to help Major Samantha Carter find a way to rescue Teal'c, who is trapped inside an active Stargate wormhole. The scientist may be an expert when it comes to Stargate technology, but his limited interpersonal skills coupled with his enormous ego results in him getting on everyone's nerves, not the least of which Carter's.

McKay later expresses his sincerest of apologies to the major in Redemption, and the two cross paths yet again in the Stargate Atlantis episode Grace Under Pressure. Luckily for Carter, she is just a figment of the concussed McKay's mind, but her "presence" turns out to be invaluable as he tries to figure out how to escape from a crashed puddle jumper that is sinking further down into the ocean surrounding Atlantis. Despite his character's dangerous predicament, David Hewlett, who plays McKay, has fond memories of this story.
"This episode stands out the most for me for a number of reasons," says Hewlett. "I mean, number one, I got to work once again with Amanda Tapping [Samantha Carter], which was great. Grace Under Pressure was such a unique experience for me in that, while it might not necessarily be my favorite episode to watch, it was my favorite to shoot because it was just so much McKay. It was like a one-man show. Even when they cut back to the Atlantis base, there were people there hoping that my character was OK," chuckles the actor...

Sanctuary - SciFi and TV Talk: Christopher Heyerdahl Interview

Sanctuary's Christopher Heyerdahl - The Beast Within

Sanctuary's Christopher Heyerdahl, Amanda Tapping and Robin Dunne

It was over 120 years ago that Montague John Druitt became a suspect in Jack the Ripper's serial killing of eight prostitutes that were carried out in London between August and November 1888. A teacher at Blackheath's boy's school, he was dismissed from his place of employment shortly before committing suicide in November 1888.

Who would have thought that Druitt would resurface, albeit in fictional form, on the hit Sci-Fi TV series Sanctuary. He and his former lover, Dr. Helen Magnus, were part of a group of 19th century scientists called "The Five." Their experiments with pure vampire blood gave each of them an Abnormal power, Druitt's being the ability to teleport. His body was later taken over by a homicidal energy creature that drove him to commit the Jack the Ripper murders.

Photobucket

Druitt made his debut in a series of eight 15-minute Sanctuary webisodes, with veteran stage, feature film and TV actor Christopher Heyerdahl cast in the role. Because this is a character that has lived considerably longer than the ordinary human being, he wanted to try his best to get that as well as several other things across in his performance.
"Whenever you're creating a character for the first time, especially one that you think so highly of after reading the script, your number one concern is making sure you do him justice," says Heyerdahl. "So with John Druitt I started out doing a lot of research into the time period that he came from, and then through the past 150 years that he's spent on this planet and compared it to the nearly five decades that I've been here. It's a perspective that is very particular.

"There are quite a few octogenarians and even older individuals who live in the same building as I do in Vancouver. I spoke with a number of them about how peculiar life is when you've seen so much and in a world that has changed so dramatically, certainly in the last 80 or 90 years. You then try to bring all that into the relationship between Druitt and Magnus [Amanda Tapping], which has experienced an awful lot, too. He knows that she brought their child Ashley [Emilie Ullerup] to term, and in the webisodes he's been searching and searching for her for pretty much 120 years..."

Exclusive: Robin Dunne Has Found His 'Sanctuary'

The Syfy series is out on Blu-ray and we chat to one of the stars

By Michael Simpson | Friday, June 18, 2010

Photobucket

Given that Sanctuary is filmed on an ultra-high definition camera, the Vancouver-shot fantasy series seems tailor-made for Blu-ray. It was surprising last year, then, when the First Season came to the home entertainment market only on DVD. Thankfully that has been rectified this week with the release of both Seasons One and Two on BD. Cinema Spy has a full review of those coming up. In the meantime we are marking the occasion with an interview with one of the show's stars, Robin Dunne.

Dunne plays Will Zimmerman, assistant and protégé to monster hunter Dr Helen Magnus (played by Stargate's Amanda Tapping). Magnus runs the sanctuary of the show's title. The unnaturally old but beautiful scientist uses the sanctuary to study and provide a safe have for so-called abnormals. These are mutant beings who might be seen as threatening by 'normal' humanity.

Sanctuary started life as a short Web series. It was popular enough to be picked up by a collection of broadcasters in various countries, including Syfy in the United States and The Movie Network/Movie Central in Canada (later moving to the SPACE Channel). In our chat Dunne discussed what it's like to have been there from the beginning, his character's evolution through the Web series and both seasons that have aired so far (a third is now in production) and why he thinks he has the best job in the world.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

CinemaSpy: What are the highlights for Will Zimmerman in Season Two?
Robin Dunne: The two-hour opening is really amazing. We ended on a serious cliffhanger on Season One and that just gets a hell of a lot harder and the stakes just skyrocket. From the get-go Season Two is just a major rollercoaster ride. We do have some amazing episodes. We have a couple of two-handers this season, which are a lot of fun. Amanda Tapping has directed an episode, which is a wonderful episode, and it was a really big treat to work with her as an actor and director. There's nothing that she can't do. Also, stylistically we've done some different stuff [in Season Two]. The shows now look a little different. The scope of the show's going to get a little bigger. And I think because of the stylistic changes the audience is going to get even more of a peek into the show and to see what all the characters are going through all the time. I think definitely it's going to blow your mind.

Sci-fi show finds Sanctuary in Vancouver

By Katherine Monk, Canwest News Service June 11, 2010

VANCOUVER - Ian Tracey's face is black, blue and bloody, but he's not getting any love from a stone-faced Amanda Tapping. Dressed in black leathers and knee-high boots, the veteran actor is getting tough with this alien brand of Cybil - an "abnormal" with multiple personalities - because, well, the survival of humanity depends on it.

Welcome to the Vancouver set of Sanctuary - "the little show that could."

A special-effects and character-driven series recently picked up for its third season by Canadian and US networks, Sanctuary is just the latest Sci-Fi skein to call Vancouver home - carrying on a legacy forged nearly 20 years ago with the birth of X-Files and the eventual installation of the Stargate spin-off family.

... Sanctuary airs in Canada on Space, and in the US on SyFy. Sanctuary Season 2 is available on DVD June 15.
