Hello and welcome to my very first blog for Blastr! I'm absolutely thrilled to be blogging on this site, and even more thrilled that my ramblings will not have to be reduced to 140 characters or less!

However, as you know, we actors need constant inspiration, and so I called upon the creative minds of my Twitter followers (http://www.twitter.com/jewelstaite if you want to join the dark side—and yes, that was a shameless plug, don't judge me) for some juicy questions to answer for my blog. And man, was I ever flooded with the juicy! Since my very first blog can't exactly be 50,000 words (nobody likes a rambler. Oh, wait....), I've only picked 10 to answer for now.

"Will there be a Serenity 2?" did not, sadly, make the list. Because I'm already asked that on a daily basis.

Morena Baccarin chats to us about her starring role in V, as well as squeezing in time for a bit of Firefly, Stargate and Shakespeare...

Morena Baccarin earned her geek stripes many years ago simply by jumping aboard the good ship Firefly. More recently though, she's been fronting up the new version of V as Anna, and it's her face that's been beaming down from the publicity posters. Here, she spared us some time to talk about the show, and what else she's up to...

A brief excerpt:

Can you tell us a little bit about what your reaction was to reading how they'd managed to update V when you took a look at the script?

First you feel that I hope it's going to be good. It's a remake of the show from the 80s that was very much about Nazi Germany, Nazi Youth programmes, the cold war stuff going on. When I read the script I thought I really hope they've updated it.

What they did is they contemporised the character so that Chad Decker, played by Scott Wolf, is an ambitious reporter, which is something we can all identify with.

There's multi-ethnic and cultural relationships in it, which is really great. And a priest, the idea of faith, and what we're playing with is wonderfully contemporised too.

And terrorism, which is something that we today are dealing with more than we were in the 80s.There's a really scary thing that you can't trust your neighbours and you don't really know who is with you and who is against you. I like that idea, that we are not safe in our own borders.

When my good friend and hero, cultural activist/artist/writer Martin Firrell told me that he was working with Stargate Atlantis’s Joe Flanigan for a new public art project, I had to find out more! Here in my interview with Martin, he talks about his art, the importance of science fiction, what it was like to work with Nathan Fillion and Joe Flanigan, and what sci-fi inspired projects he has planned for the future:


Science fiction seems to have really influenced you as an artist and writer – Complete Hero and King Of My Heart featured Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) – and you just did a shoot with Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis). Why do you think sci-fi is so important?

Martin: “I love that science fiction asks huge and important questions in an accessible and confident way. Sci-fi speaks to everyone (not just academics and philosophers) but takes on huge academic and philosophic questions. I have decided to get closer to sci-fi in my art practice over the coming year, so expect lots more on this. I also love that shows like Firefly and Stargate have committed, clever, huge followings of intelligent and questioning fans who are powerful in their interest and understanding. Gertrude Stein said the trick was to have a small audience that made a lot of noise, and sci-fi fandoms tend to be self-contained and very vigorous, noisy, brilliant places. I also think there is something about outsidership and exclusion. So much of sci-fi deals with those themes, and is inclusive and generous. The classic example is the bridge of the original Enterprise: whilst parts of America were still segregated, the bridge was mixed in race and gender and all the more powerful because of the talents of all involved.”

“I also rather like that sci fi is this hidden ‘jewel’ – some people dismiss it because they do not understand it, whereas we know its true worth...”

As promised on last night’s episode of PTG, here’s the audio recording of the “Women of the Whedonverse” Panel that took place on Day 2 of the FX International Show. Hosted by “Word Balloon” podcast host John Suintres, the panel featured actors Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Stargate SG-1), Jewel Staite (Firefly, Stargate Atlantis), Julie Benz (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), Juliet Landau (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), and Clare Kramer (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The ladies of the Whedonverse address the questions of the standing-room only event, in addition to talking about their own current projects and expressing their annoyance with the frequent interruptions of the Exhibition Hall PA Announcer.

Though the panel itself ran for an hour, only 45 minutes of the panel consisted of the Q & A session–the last 15 minutes consisted of a video tribute to the late Andy Hallett, who starred on “Angel” and passed away of a heart attack on March 29th, 2009. Your character writing novels. Are you a fan of the genre?

Once I got the role, I am immersed in it. I read Clive Cussler, some James Patterson. I love to read in general although I'm not a fast reader. I have my rhythm, I have my film in my head. For example, I read everything The Lord of the Rings before the release of films because I wanted to refresh the memory. I like being transported into another universe, a different era, to escape. Parker and Spenser series, for fun. I admire Parker for his ability to describe details. It is also one of the qualities of Castle. It attaches great importance. But it is also a spoiled rotten kid who only thinks of him and lives in his small world. This does nevertheless be very, very intelligent!

A Few With Fillion: 'Castle' Star Speaks

Last Friday, I participated in a satellite interview tour with Nathan Fillion, former star of Joss Whedon's first Fox series "Firefly" -- in which he played tortured, sardonic spaceship Capt. Malcolm Reynolds -- and current star of ABC's Monday-night crime caper show, "Castle."

As video of the interview was only available on Beta tape, and that's very difficult to post on the Web with only a laptop and my limited skills, I have only six or so minutes of audio to offer.

But this is Nathan Fillion, who's as quick-witted as any actor I've ever interviewed, so a few minutes counts for a lot.

And so you understand what I'm talking about when I mention the reactions of some folks on Twitter to the initially lukewarm reviews of the show, I've posted some of the tweets below.

I confess to thinking that the concept -- handsome mystery novelist pairs with snarky female cop to chase killer committing murders based on his books -- was not exactly groundbreaking, as I said here...
