I was given permission to post the teaser sequence to Impressions here on the blog when it was announced, and since details appeared on the Big Finish website today, here goes:

A brief excerpt:


ACT 1

SCENE 1

Neutral, narrating space.

LORNE:Light and shade.

The dappled green of forest leaves. The splashes of white foam on dark grey seas. The pools of light that collect like water in the fissures of a rock face.

Light and shade, colour and form; that’s how I try to see the world. The boundaries between one thing and another. The distinctions.

Anybody who carries a gun in the name of peace needs to be comfortable with shades of grey. I live in no man’s land, surrounded by water and working under fire. Caught between extremes.

This is what I try to capture in paint on canvas. It’s like trying to bottle lightning. But it helps ...

Who can imagine the City of Atlantis without Maj. Evan Lorne? Kavan Smith talks about the character that he has quite literally made his own.

A brief excerpt:

... As Stargate Atlantis has continued, viewers have seen more and more of Lorne. Season four’s “Tabula Rasa” even managed to showcase what a scary character the soldier could be if he wanted – certainly an eye opener!

“I found him a bit scary too,” admits the actor. “I think that was the one episode where he sort of went military, straight-up soldier boy. I guess trying to combat whatever it is wiping everybody’s minds would be a really nerve-wracking thing. You wipe the slate clean and you have no idea who you are or where you are. The one thing that he does know is that he’s a soldier. Even if he doesn’t remember his training or how he got there, he identifies that he’s in this outfit and he’s got a gun, so that gives him a bit of a crutch. It would be terrifying to not know who you are all of a sudden. So this guy is not going to have a sense of humor, he’s going to be very paranoid, he’s going to be very sketchy and uppity.”

Thankfully, Lorne was soon returned to normal – ready to continue protecting Atlantis and her occupants into season five.

Captain Kirk or Captain Jack Sparrow?

Kavan: Sparrow. Without any question, all the way. Kirk, nice and campy. Sparrow, hysterical, just hysterical. Being around the guy, Sparrow. Playing him in a show, Sparrow. Which one inspires me more, Sparrow. I mean pretty much everything about it, definitely, huge Johnny Depp fan, too, so in all cases, Sparrow!

Supporting Atlantis: An Interview with Kavan Smith

If you’re a genre TV fan, you’ve seen Kavan Smith. He’s had roles on Battlestar Galactica (The Captain’s Hand), Supernatural (Time is on My Side), Smallville (Kinetic), Blade, Jeremiah, Tru Calling, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and a 21 episode run as Jim Garrity on The 4400. But to Stargate Atlantis fans he’s Major Lorne — 2nd in command of the military units under Major John Sheppard.

He joined the show in 2005 after briefly playing a character with the same name (though not really the same guy) on Stargate SG-1. Four years later, he’s credited with being in a quarter of the series run and yet he’s never had a storyline to call his own! I object.

“The character seems to be developing a little bit, which is always nice for a secondary character,” says Kavan Smith. “It seems like Lorne, instead of just being Shepherd’s right hand man, his military career is progressing so it feels less like a subservient kind of role on Atlantis now and a bit more like, I won’t say an equal, but a somewhat authoritative role. So I’m kinda running my own show; which is a neat way for Lorne to go. More so this year than any others anyway, I feel like his career is sort of moving ahead.”

It has been over a year since GateWorld last chatted with Kavan Smith about his role as Major E. Lorne on Stargate Atlantis. The character has remained the steady go-to guy in the absence of Colonel Sheppard, and Smith couldn't be happier.



GateWorld's Chad Colvin recently caught up with the actor at Creation Entertainment's 2007 Stargate Convention in Vancouver. Kavan talks about recent updates to the character, relishing in moments where Lorne's personal life is explored. He also reveals some of his favorite moments from Season Four, such as a particular scene between he and David Hewlett in "The Last Man."

Kavan Smith is an actor and fan favorite who can fit almost any role he is given to play. He is most recognized for sci-fi and other genre-related venues, for which he excels, however, his range as an actor far exceeds just that one element of performing.

SoSF: The last time we saw "Lorne" was in "First Strike", the season finale. Will we see more of "Major Lorne" in the new season and do you get to work much with Amanda Tapping or Jewel Staite?

KS: I did in fact work with Amanda and Jewel though not at great lengths. Too bad. Lorne gets more responsibility this season. The role has become a bit more dynamic and the possibilities have really widened. I think that it really now gives Lorne a direction and not just relegated to being simply a secondary character.

SoSF: Tell us something about Kavan that most people don't know!

KS: [I] can recite Homeric poems in ancient Greek while juggling live grenades and chainsaws on a tightrope strung across the Grand Canyon. {Laughs} Nobody knew that.

The last story slot has finally been filled. We spent most of yesterday spinning, then breaking Harmony which I am really, really, REALLY looking forward to. Alas, I won't be writing it as Marty G. will be assuming said duties, but I have no doubt he'll do a brilliant job AND have a lot of fun with it.

Watched the Day 2 Mix of Travelers yesterday. Great episode (Hey, Sheppard bruised and bloodied - what's not to like?), and tremendous work on the part of Joel Goldsmith who produced a terrific score. To all of you Sam fans dying for a hint of what's going on with Carter's love life, you'll have to wait until Trio for a
not-so-subtle tip-off. Let the gang at SDJ begin their predictable hysterics… NOW! The director's cut of Miller's Crossing came in a little long which will probably mean a scene or two not making the cut - but hopefully finding their way onto a future Deleted Footage Special Feature. By the way, guest star Steven Culp is terrific in this one. Finally, we will get around to breaking that Sheppard on Earth story next week along with what we hope will be the season finale.

Anonymous #1 writes: "Is Teyla's pregnancy a season long thing, or will she be back to her wraith-kicking self before the end of season 4?"

Answer: Since Rachel will be pregnant throughout the shooting of season four, the Teyla character will also be pregnant through most of the season.


Miles writes: "Any chance we'll ever see Colin Cunningham make an appearance on Atlantis?"

Answer: No plans to see Colin in Atlantis for now.

Jason writes: "Do we still find out where Lorne is from in the Kindred I?"

Answer: Yup.
