Battlestar Galactica rocks the United Nations

In a landmark event that showcased just how relevant a TV program can be, Battlestar Galactica was the prime topic of discussion at the United Nations Tuesday night in New York.

The biggest names behind Battlestar Galactica—stars Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell and executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick—sat on a panel in the Economic and Social Council Chamber with UN representatives to explore what the show had to say about world issues over its four-season run. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg led the panel through two hours of discussion that touched on race relations, terrorism, gender equality and a host of other issues ...

“The Cylons were created by man. They were created to make life easier on the 12 colonies. And then the day came when the Cylons decided to kill their masters.”

So began the 2003 reimagining of Battlestar Galactica, a startling new kind of science fiction and a far cry from the kitschy, kid-appeal series of the same name that aired on ABC in the late ’70s. This new Battlestar was raw, dense and uncomfortably familiar to us in our post-9/11 world. It took the war on terror and sent it into deep space, drawing clear parallels between the humanoid Cylons and the sleeper agents of al Qaeda. In this paranoia-filled universe, nuclear bombs have killed all but about 40,000 humans, whose goal to get to a fabled land called Earth ended tragically last year when they arrived only to find that it, too, was in nuclear ruin. But then, that’s BSG shockingly unpredictable to the end. Despite critical hosannas, a Peabody Award and the obsessive devotion of fans, the series will conclude its four-season run on March 20 with a rabidly guarded two-hour finale. Here, exec producers Ron Moore and David Eick and the cast get their geek on one last time as they share their favorite memories of life aboard the beloved mothership.

"We quickly zeroed in on Mary McDonnell and Eddie Olmos because we loved Mary in "Donnie Darko," and the stoic, stern, scary character that Eddie played in "Blade Runner." But we couldn't find our Starbuck, which was the most controversial role. When I was home rewatching some audition videos, my wife walked by and saw Katee Sackhoff and said, "What's wrong with you, David? She's right there!" I rewound and she was right. Katee, although a lot younger and stockier than we imagined, was fantastic!"

'Battlestar's' Olmos Bids Farewell to Galactica

Edward James Olmos, who plays Admiral William Adama on Sci Fi Channel's space epic "Battlestar Galactica," which has its big finale (That is, if you don't count an upcoming TV-movie, directed by Olmos, the "Caprica" prequel or rumors of a possible feature film, but why quibble?) on Friday, March 20, has seen the end.

And he liked it.

"I've been privileged enough to be able to see it," Olmos says, "and I've got to tell you, I'm very, very happy with what it ends up doing for the show and for the viewers who've given it five years of their lives, watching the story unfold.

"This is the best usage of episodic television that I've ever seen in my life. I don't even think anything gets close."
