'Stargate Universe' nabs guest stars

The Sci Fi Channel has lined up guest stars for its upcoming series "SGU: Stargate Universe."

... Four veterans of the "Stargate" franchise, Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Gary Jones, will reprise their roles in guest stints.

... Grammy-nominted Janelle Monae will play herself and will perform with her band two songs from her latest album, "Many Moons" and "Sincerely."

Carlo Rota will play Carl Strom, head of the International Oversight Advisory, the civilian oversight committee that heads up the Atlantis expedition and all funding.

'MacGyver' getting revived as feature film

New Line developing pic based on ABC's 1985-92 series

New Line is using twine, bubble gum and a pencil to throw "MacGyver" into development as a feature film.

Raffaella De Laurentiis, daughter of Dino De Laurentiis, is producing through her Raffaella Prods. along with Martha De Laurentiis and series creator Lee Zlotoff.

Dino De Laurentiis is exec producing.

"MacGyver" was a science-oriented adventure series that ran from 1985-92 on ABC. Richard Dean Anderson, later of "Stargate: Atlantis" and "SG-1" fame, starred as an incredibly resourceful secret agent for the Phoenix Foundation who frequently would escape from dangerous situations with ingenious and lightning-quick engineering trickery.

Two telefilms starring Anderson aired in the years after the show's cancellation. The character eventually achieved enough cultural penetration to become a reference for anyone attempting to jury-rig a solution out of household items. "Saturday Night Live" took the concept to the next level with its spoofs "MacGruber," starring Will Forte ...

Lou Diamond Phillips, Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque and Alaina Huffman round out the cast of Sci Fi Channel's new original series "SGU: Stargate Universe."

... Phillips, repped by Global Artists and manager JB Roberts, will play Col. Telford, a lifelong military man and the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition.

... Huffman ("Smallville") will play MSgt. Tamara Johansen, a field medic assigned to treat the seriously wounded. She is repped by the Paul Kohner Agency and New Wave.

Robert Carlyle is next 'Stargate' leader

Actor cast in third installment of the Sci Fi franchise

"SGU," the third installment in the cable channel's "Stargate" franchise, hails from "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, who will write and executive produce the new series.

Sci Fi Channel is expected to give the MGM TV-produced "SGU" a 20-episode order.

Production on the series is slated to begin in February in Vancouver. It is targeted to launch in the summer with a two-hour premiere.

"Robert Carlyle brings a depth, intelligence and complexity to his roles, which will fit perfectly with the fresh, new reinvention of this franchise," Sci Fi original-programming chief Mark Stern said.

Scotland-born Carlyle, best known for his roles in "Trainspotting" and "The Full Monty," recently starred opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Fox's "24: Redemption." He is repped by Gersh, manager Jon Rubinstein and the U.K.'s Christian Hodell.

SCI FI Channel is set to announce the pickup of Stargate Universe, the third series in the long-running franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

News of Universe comes on the heels of SCI FI's announcement that the current Stargate Atlantis will not receive a sixth-season order, the trade paper reported. Atlantis will live on in a two-hour telefilm to air on SCI FI in 2009...

Sci Fi Channel isn’t about to let down “Stargate” fans.

The network is set to announce the order of a new series from MGM Television, “Stargate: Universe,” that will mark the third entry in Sci Fi’s longest-running original series franchise.

The greenlight comes on the heels of Sci Fi’s confirming Thursday that “Stargate: Atlantis” will not receive a sixth-season order. The “Universe” pickup ensures the continuation of the popular “Stargate” franchise, which has been on the air in various incarnations since 1997.

“Universe” will premiere as a two-hour movie early next year and will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of “Stargate: SG-1” and “Atlantis,” will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

The new show will involve more space-based action than “SG-1” or “Atlantis.” With the “Star Trek” television franchise having folded in 2005 and Sci Fi’s “Battlestar Galactica” airing its final episodes next year, the network hopes “Universe” will become sci-fi fans’ new favorite space-travel series...

Canadian directors vie for guild award

TORONTO -- David Cronenberg ("Eastern Promises"), Denys Arcand ("The Age of Darkness"), Jeremy Podeswa ("Fugitive Pieces") and Kari Skogland ("The Stone Angel") will compete for the best director trophy at the Directors Guild of Canada Awards in the fall, organizers said Monday.

The TV series competition will see Stephen Surjik compete for his work on "Intelligence," Holly Dale for "Durham County," James Marshall with "Smallville" and Martin Wood for "Stargate Atlantis."

The DGC awards will be handed out Nov. 8 in Toronto.

...In other casting news, Polly Walker has come on board Sci Fi Channel's two-hour pilot "Caprica" and Saul Rubinek has been added to Sci Fi's pilot "Warehouse 13."

On the "Galactica" prequel "Caprica," Walker ("Rome") will play Sister Clarice Willow, the gracious, eloquent and duplicitous high priestess and headmistress of the Athena Academy, a private religious school.

In "Warehouse," Rubinek ("Leverage") will play Artie Nielsen, a longtime Secret Service agent in charge of Warehouse 13, a location where the government houses supernatural objects.
