Umbrella Talk with playwright Kate Hewlett

Welcome back to Umbrella Talk! We kick off our 2009 Umbrella Talk series with playwright and actor Kate Hewlett. Kate's play Humans Anonymous is playing this week at Toronto's Next Stage Festival. Kate tells us what theatrical project she's dying to write next, who she'd like the academics to compare her to 50 years from now and who inspires her---a person who has motivation, courage and is open to change.

A little more about Kate Hewlett

Kate, a National Theatre School and Queens University graduate, is an actor and a playwright. Her plays include Humans Anonymous and The Swearing Jar. Kate was also a member of Tarragon Theatre's Playwrights unit in 2007 and is an associate artist with Unspun Theatre. Selected
theatre acting credits include Noble Parasites, Don't Wake Me, Head-Smashed-In and Unity (1918). Selected television and film acting credits include Stargate: Atlantis, Last New Year (feature), Psych and A Dog's Breakfast (feature).

How do you deal with praise? With criticism?

After my first episode of Stargate Atlantis aired (I was a guest star in a few episodes) I spent hours -- literally, hours -- reading all of the online comments about my performance. The Stargate fans are loyal and lovely, so it took a long time to find a really cruel one, but when I did...I was finally able to stop looking. I needed to read the worst possible criticism in order to get over my fear of it. Now, I am less affected by reviews, praise, criticism or feedback. The most important thing is the audience reaction, and the experience itself. Reviews are only important because they affect audience turnout.

Greetings strangers!

...Weird shooting the last few episodes of Atlantis, I must say. Cooper's giant episode "Vegas" is going to keep me busy all weekend with the brain stomping amount of McKay dialogue next week...I'm not going to miss that aspect of things...then again, maybe I will! Next up, we're on to the 100th and last episode followed by a fancy 100th episode party that is now serving as the final wrap bash.

I'm getting tons of email with well-wishes and reactions to the cancellation and I really appreciate your kindness and enthusiasm for what we do and did here at Atlantis. Obviously I'm all for you letting me know, but make sure you do the same to MGM, FOX, SciFi, and any channel you've been watching us on...they really need to know how much you want to see McKay...I mean Atlantis...back on TV!

No word on the Atlantis movie yet, but I imagine info will trickle in once the writing department is finished with season five.

MGM/FOX has just let us know that they've decided to hold off on an international release for "A Dog's Breakfast" until February 2009...ARRGH! We've been pushed so many times and heard so many conflicting things now that we're finding it hard to get that excited.

So for the record, the "official word" is that "A Dog's Breakfast" will now be released in the following markets to tie in with the release of season five of ATLANTIS. You should be able to get the film in Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, The UK, and Australia at the same time you're picking up your last twenty episodes of Atlantis...

No, I'm not talking about the Atlantis cancellation...though we all really appreciate the tremendous show of support and snarkiness ;-) Thanks for that! Suffice it to say that I'll miss McKay as much as you will :-( - and now there's a whole GateWorld podcast to prove it!

I've got the new install of Joomla going live complete with a new Fireboard forum which will hopefully come up and running that HOPEFULLY with all your chitter-chatter-gold intact. Was playing around on funnyordie.com the other morning (Will Ferrell's short is what got me there...brilliant!) and thought I might as well put up the "A Dog's Breakfast" trailer...I know, I know, you've seen it all before, but if you're visiting can I ask the usual? Please give us a "funny" rating, a favourtie and/or a comment...and then feel free to check out what I've favourited and have a giggle...ah the fun you can have in the early dawn while Baz hurls peaches,bananas and oatmeal around the kitchen!

Got the Bike! Did I mention the bike I got...I got a bike! Jane, Baz, the mutt and I were out for hours tooling around, stopping for ice cream, stopping for coffee...actually we did a lot of stopping on our bike around town...me towing the "Baz Mobile"...yes, not to be left out Sebastian bought me a chariot of his own for me to tow around. Not sure exactly how that is a present for me, but I do get a certain glee whizzing around the Point watching the wide-eyed Baz trying to catch insects in his wide open mouth (there's a screen on this baby so he's not actually going to have to eat the things)...

They've been shooting "Whispers" mainly second unit for the last few days but I did get a chance to catch up with one of my favourite actresses ever - Nicole DeBoer who is guest starring opposite McGillion (lucky devil!) in the episode. Haven't spoken to her since "Cube" and I'm really hoping that she'll be back on Atlantis shortly!
Finishing up "The Queen" (poor Rachel with all those prosthetics!) and looking forward to some great outdoors fun in the lovely and talented Carl Binder's episode "Tracker". Will Warring (who some of you may know as the camera operator on "A Dog's Breakfast"...okay, and he directed a few Atlantis episodes too apparently ;-) will bring his usual wicked sense of humour and Zenlike calm as Director (when I'm not trying to avoid biting bugs, I will bring down my merciless teasing upon him). Carl has decided to throw the whole episode at one on one time between Ronan and McKay as they try to rescue Keller from a mysterious new fella! Action and banter galore...can't wait (where's the bug spray?)!

Still haven't got my hands on a copy of "Ark of Truth", but I did get myself a copy of "Continuum"...and how sweet it is! Incredible action sequences and lots of your SG1 favourites. Thumbs up from Hewlett and congrats to Brad Wright and Martin Wood on a fantastic job! Now how about an Atlantis Movie...what am I thinking?!...I mean McKay - The Movie!? ;-)

Yes Monday AM and I'm blogging...had time to learn a few days worth of lines on the weekend...what a civilized way to start the week!

Needed on set now, so forgive any mistakes below!

Today we begin a new episode, Brad Wright's "The Shrine"...the one I'm so excited about. Kate is here acting up a storm and asking hundreds of irritating questions and generally trying to make people think she's nicer than me...bring it on sinister sibling! We've got Jewel back from her adventures in Australia and she's in fine form, having already had me in stitches a few times and we haven't even shot anything yet?! Jason and Rachel are playing the comedy duo...certainly in the scene we've just shot anyway. I think we should just cave and make Stargate Atlantis an all out comedy...so many good jokes going to waste off camera...hmmm. Speaking of which, we're hoping to hear word on the latest "Starcrossed" synopsis some time soon...this week maybe? Finger crossed for Starcrossed! Things move so much slower when you're working in the big leagues. It's so much quicker when you're doing it all yourself...but then again, you also have to pay for everything yourself...so bring it on SciFi!

Not only has David Hewlett been helping to save an alien civilization on Stargate Atlantis, he's also found time to write and direct a feature film during the hiatus. Instead of playing Dr. Rodney McKay, who has been using his genius to aid in the preservation of Atlantis, Hewlett used his downtime to write, direct and star in A Dog's Breakfast. While you can check out the details on http://www.adogsbreakfastmovie.com, you can also look forward to seeing Hewlett on the fourth season of Atlantis, which kicks off on September 28. We tracked down David while he was running around Vancouver to talk about his directorial debut and what's up with the new season of Stargate Atlantis.

UGO: Was it easy to get the Stargate crew to work for 14 days?

DAVID: Surprisingly, yes. Paul I kind of knew he'd have nothing else to do. He pretends to have a life, and it's very sad, so I pretty well knew we had him. Kate [Hewlett] was really hard to get a hold of, because she's got a writing/acting career herself, so timing her stuff was harder, and also Paul knew about it from the beginning. I told him, "Look, we're writing something for you. Are you going to be available during the hiatus?" and he said yes. He actually put money into the film as well. As I put it to him, "So you're paying me to hire you?"

David Hewlett ("Dr. Rodney McKay") tells GateWorld September 18th is the DVD release of his directorial debut "A Dog's Breakfast", Season Three of Atlantis [on DVD] -- and his first child!

"It's coming out the week the baby's due," he says of his movie. "I hope both releases go well. Mars [his dog] is already looking nervous." And the baby's gender? "Not a clue. We're strangely old-fashioned that way. Everything else we're as hi-tech as we can go, but we don't want to know until we know."

So, coming up on Canadian Spotlight, we'll have David Hewlett talking about his new movie, A Dog's Breakfast.

Here's the story of why I wanted 'A Dog's Breakfast' on Canadian Spotlight. David Hewlett wrote, directed and starred in the movie. He also funded it. Wikipedia says he spent about a hundred grand, which isn't much for a movie. He borrowed equipment, borrowed friends, and used what he had available. And then… he sold it to MGM! His first movie! Now, if I made a movie, I'd go bankrupt. David sold his to MGM. Even though David isn't a poor man (it looks like he's been working pretty steadily and is now the lead on a TV show… but it's not 'Friends' or something so I doubt he's raking in twenty million a season) I still think it's a pretty cool success story.

So, if you don't know who David Hewlett is, don't worry! I've done some research for you! I'm the kind of person who, if I'm going to interview someone, wants to know the answers before I even ask the questions. I want to have at least an idea of where the interview is going to go. So, I scoured the internet, and this is what I came up with:

"A Dog's Breakfast" DVD's are also winging their way ever closer. Can't wait to see our puppy on DVD shelves around the nation. The U.K. should be seeing the hound on DVD in early 2008 and I'll keep you posted on any news for those of you "international-ites". The Vancouver Film School has put together a screening of "A Dog's Breakfast", with a bit of a film-nerd chat about making movies, on Saturday September 8th at 4pm. Not sure if you have to be a student or not, but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Good, Bad, Ugly Dogs and Wanda

Had the pleasure of watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly the other night. What a treat! If you want to see why Clint Eastwood is a star and where Tarantino gets most of his genius from then Sergio Leone is the man to watch. This movie is phenomenal! I've seen it before in bits and pieces, but sitting down and watching the thing properly is an awe-inspiring experience...

Almost half way through the "Design of the Dead" script. It's going to need a fair bit of work to get it out of "writer's draft" (which translates as the "I'm not showing nobody" pass!) but I'm really looking forward to pushing ahead with that! The next two Stargate Atlantis episodes "Harmony" & "Trio" are really McKay heavy so I doubt I'm going to have much time to do more than just learn lines and sleep, but even with hiatus, DVD releases and babies fast approaching I'm still very eager to get back behind the camera!

September the 18th is the DVD release (in North America) for A Dog's Breakfast. Jane and Fox have been great about getting me out there for publicity and such, and we're really hoping that the film is well received. Big shout-out to the Dragon Con attendees:

MS: What can fans look forward to seeing with your character this season?

DH: I think the more sarcastic I can be the better. It's interesting. This season is a big change for us. All of a sudden you have certain characters interacting that you didn't have before. McKay is in this wonderful situation; he's interacting with his girlfriend, and Samantha Carter and the new Doctor, played by Jewel Staite. He's really in his element right now. It's neat. It's really playing with all the character stuff we had previously set up and really breaking it down and changing things this year.

Comicon Crazy!

How great is it to be surrounded by over 100,000 of your own? These are my peeps! These are the Comicon geeks!

We've just done a massive Stargate Atlantis panel for about 4000 fans here in sunny, sweaty San Diego and signed a few hundred posters for those that could stand the heat of the endless line-ups. I couldn't hear a damn thing on the panel. So, instinct kicked in and I took the defensively smiling meerkat stance of polite attention with a slight edge of alertness for danger. No problem hearing the questions from the floor, just impossible to make out the words of anyone on the
stage with me...perhaps it's better that way ;-)

"I'm with Genius"


He's obnoxious. He's insensitive. He's a citrus-hating jerk.

Fortunately, Dr. Rodney McKay is nothing like his real-life counterpart, actor David Hewlett. Always kind, down-to-earth and unceasingly funny, David recently welcomed us into his trailer once again on the Vancouver set of Stargate Atlantis.

In our latest interview, David talks about the big changes to come in the fourth season of Stargate Atlantis, which is now in production. He has plenty to say about working with Amanda Tapping ("Samantha Carter") on a regular basis, and about how far Rodney McKay has come in the past few years. Finally, he fills us in on his other projects, including the new independent film "A Dog's Breakfast" and the sitcom
pilot Starcrossed.

GW: Finally, what would you like to say to fans who are getting ready to tune in to Season Four this fall?

DH: Ah. Thank you for waiting so long! God, how long has it been since Season Three aired? What would I say? Make sure you go to the bathroom before you start because we've got some scary episodes coming up. You will not want to leave.

Give the new kids a chance. See what you make of them. You'll definitely enjoy the new additions, as well. And look for some familiar faces. Something like that.

But definitely, make sure, if you've got to pee, go before. Because you've got an hour of television there and you do not want to hold it that long. Because there's going to be an accident.
