Stargate Atlantis / SG1 - TV Guide: Michael Shanks in 'First Contact'

From the print TV Guide, September 22-28 '08 edition, page 52:

HIGHLIGHTS

STARGATE ATLANTIS

Friday (Sept. 26) 10/9C, SciFi

Q&A Michael Shanks

Since Stargate SG-1 closed its portal, Michael Shanks had popped up on such non sci-fi shows as 24 and Burn Notice. Tonight he reprises his role as archaeologist Daniel on Atlantis. -- Ileane Rudolph

Q. What's Daniel doing on Atlantis?
MS: "I kept bugging the producers...and they wrote a story where he comes to find a secret lab that contains important technology. Then a batch of unexpected villains show up. Let's just say, Daniel has a history with them."

Q. Daniel has to work with the annoying Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett). Producer Joe Mallozzi says you two were like Abbott and Costello.
MS: [Laughs] "David's very good at the rhythmic gymnastics of our banter. David and I are such fast talkers that they had to write more than six extra pages in the episode!"

Q. Following your gig as a good-guy scholar, you played a traitor on 24 and now you're Victor, a scary thug on Burn Notice. Why?
MS: "After playing the Boy Scout for as many years as I did, it's fun to sink your teeth into some over-the-top villains. We'll learn about Victor's true agenda when he returns in early '09."

Q. What else have you been working on?
MS: "The Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon, a movie for SciFi Channel with Shannen Doherty. I play a reluctant Indiana Jones character. Everyone on the planet is aware of Shannen's reputation, but she was wonderful."

Stargate SG1 - Christopher Judge - Monte Carlos Film Festival '08

From TV Fest '08:

TEAL'C INDEED

Whether you prefer "Battlestar Galactica" or "Andromeda," there is no disputing the fact that Christopher Judge and Michael Shanks are the absolute mainstays of "Stargate SG-1," a sequel that is far better than original, 1994 movie. The two guys, one from LA, the other from Vancouver - are best mates and prove it...by killing each in one sf show or another!

While guesting on "Andromeda," Michael knocked of Chris. And in their own stargated galaxy, Judge's mighty Teal'c killed Michael - several times - in at least two episodes. ["Avatar," and "Moebius, Part One."]

Then again, everyone gets to kill Mike's Dr. Daniel Jackson, archaeologist and linguist (speaking more than 20 tongues, including Ancient Egyptian, German, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Spanish and, of course, Goa'uld, Ancient, and Unas (which he decoded).

In some 197 episodes since 1997, Shanks was killed about 20 times from radiation poisoning to having his head blown off. In fact, he's had fewer women than deaths - and Dr. Dan is quite a ladies' man: Adria, Hathor, Ke'ra, Samantha, Sarah, Sha're, Shyla, Vala Mal Doran. And Leda (but not the swan).

That explains the "Heroes" episode where a scientist examining some ancient ruin said: "Dr. Jackson is gonna die when he sees this." Came the obvious response was: "What? Again?"

On "Stargate," the two pals enjoy near-instantaneous interstellar travel via ancient alien devices called Stargates connecting us to the far reaches of the Milky Way, Pegasus, and Ori galaxies...Christopher Judge has appeared in more "Stargate" chapters than any of the show's stars - 207. We can now add two more. Chris stars (with Michael) in two Stargate telemovies.

He is Teal'c (born 1899), is a Jaffa, who once served the System Lord Apophis, indeed, in the capacity of First Prime. He then, indeed, joined SG-1, believing that, indeed, the "warriors" of the Tau'rio (we poor humans) could, indeed, help topple the Goa'uld. Chris is also the voice of Magneto in the "X-Men Evolution" toon series. His other work ranges from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" to "A Dog's Breakfast."

He once his inspiration in life and career were his mother; Sidney Poitier and Muhammad Ali. "He put his beliefs above any monetary value. That's why his celebrity has never waned. Movies, TV, sports, come and go, but what you stand for is what people remember. Mandela, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy are people who really stood for something and were willing to die for it. You don't see a whole lot of that any more."

Except in TV series.

Continuum shows different side of Jackson

TUESDAY, MAY 27 (ACTORS)

Actor Michael Shanks hints at what is in store for his character in the DVD movie.

A brief excerpt:

If the events in Daniel Jackson's life had gone in a different direction, how drastically would it change and affect the character?

Michael Shanks says that's one of the questions that may be answered when Stargate: Continuum arrives on store shelves in both DVD and Blu-ray formats on July 29. GateWorld sat down for an exclusive interview with the actor during a break from his appearance schedule at Creation Entertainment's Vancouver Stargate convention last month. Without going into spoilers, Shanks did mention that the character we see in the upcoming movie could be substantially different from the Dr. Jackson that fans have grown accustomed to.

February 20, 2008: Production progress.

**snippage**

Well, this week is the calm before the storm, and a golden opportunity to make some major headway on Whispers before prep begins on Broken Ties. I'm pleased to report that I'm out of Act I and making progress on Act II. Right now, I'm feeling pretty good about what I've got but, traditionally, the second-guessing doesn't really begin until, oh, Act III. There'll be a lot going on in this one
production-wise and I'd like to put it out early so that we can commence the planning/hair-rending/tearful recriminating as soon as possible.

While Marty G. is on the set of his episode (Search and Rescue), and Paul [Mullie] is prepping his episode (The Seed), and I'm writing my script (Whispers), Carl [Binder] is doing another rewrite of his script (Ghost in the Machine), and Alan [McCullough] is mulling over a possible story to slip into the #9 slot as the script originally envisioned for that spot ran into a "creative snafu" that a) moved it into the back half and b) may necessitate a change in perspective. Brad [Wright] is, of course, penning #6 (can`t wait to see the grotto), Carl is going to jump on #8 (interesting developments in this one that had Priscilla and the gang at MGM very excited), and Marty G. will do the honors for the mid- season two-parter (Welcome back to Atlantis, Dr. Jackson).

Today's photos: Snaps from the Norco set.

Today's mailbag:

Julia Justina writes: "Any news yet on how many episodes Michael Shanks/Daniel will be in next year?"

Answer: Right now, we have him for two.
