Dollhouse's Tahmoh Penikett offers up a few clues about his FBI agent

By Patrick Lee

ON 02/03/09

Former Battlestar Galactica cast member Tahmoh Penikett takes on a completely different role as troubled FBI agent Paul Ballard in Joss Whedon's upcoming Fox sci-fi series Dollhouse, and he told SCI FI Wire his character is kind of obsessed with uncovering the truth.
"Paul is ... really trying to get some solid information about the Dollhouse, and he's running into walls," Penikett said in an interview last month in Hollywood. "And when he gets a lead, ... there's powers that be that are preventing him from making any progress."

The series centers on the title operation, a top-secret group that wipes the personalities of its operatives, called "actives," then implants them with new ones that execute missions for paying clients, only to be wiped blank anew when a mission is completed. The show was created by Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and stars Eliza Dushku as Echo, one of the actives.

Following is an edited version of our interview with Penikett. Dollhouse debuts Feb. 13 and will air Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

A brief excerpt:

Your character is kind of complex. He's got his own issues, clearly. He's not just a straight FBI guy that you might expect.
Penikett: I've said this a couple of times. ... I personally think at one time Paul was being groomed for a long and successful career in the FBI. I think he had all the makings of a leader, of a very successful agent. He's intelligent, capable, hard-working, driven. And who knows where he went down a different path? ... Maybe his ambitions; ... sometimes he may have rushed in. I think there's something about him that I'm very curious about, too, and hopefully we're going to explore [it]. ... He's somewhat self-righteous. He alienates himself. And I think that might be part of the problem, where he made the mistakes in his career. So he's given this case, [with] nobody really thinking that he's going to get anywhere with it, and the thing about Paul that a lot of people have underestimated is that once he starts something, he's not quitting it. He won't quit until he's found stuff. ...

Woodshop Feature Film Premiere Draws Star Jesse Ventura, Cast & Crew to Boulder, February 15

Thursday February 5, 11:00 am ET

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The red carpet premiere of 42 Productions’ independent feature comedy Woodshop, starring Jesse Ventura, Mitch Pileggi, Don S. Davis, and Denver Bronco Rod Smith will be held February 15, 2009 at 7pm MST at the Atlas Building, a world-class media facility on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder.

15-minute media Q & A session with Jesse Ventura and director Pete Coggan held immediately prior to the screening (6:30pm)—during which photos and video are permitted.

Woodshop is actor Jesse Ventura’s first feature film in a decade. His past films include Predator, The Running Man, and Demolition Man. Mr. Ventura has also been a Navy SEAL, professional wrestler and the Governor of Minnesota.

Actor Mitch Pileggi has appeared in popular television series including The X-Files, Stargate: Atlantis, Dallas, China Beach, Gray’s Anatomy, Law & Order and Boston Legal.

Don S. Davis starred in Stargate SG-1, Twin Peaks and The X-Files; and in films including A League of Their Own, Cliffhanger, Con Air and Best In Show. Sadly, Don passed away shortly after the wrap of principal photography.

Woodshop is the first feature film from Boulder-based 42 Productions, who provide complete film and video production and post-production services for Fortune 500 clients. The picture was directed, written and produced by Pete Coggan; utilized Colorado locations; and features a number of local, young actors. Use of the innovative RED ONE digital camera enabled less lighting equipment, a smaller crew and a fast production schedule.

The main character of Woodshop, Chris, is a high school senior with one goal—to make it through high school unscathed and move on to an Ivy League college. There is just one problem; when he causes a dangerous accident in his chemistry class, he’s ordered by his principal (Davis) to spend his Saturdays in woodshop detention with an ex-Army Ranger (Ventura) and a bad kid gone really bad who intends to blow them all up...with Chris’s help.

SciFi Wire: Jared Padalecki Interview

Friday the 13th's Jared Padalecki: Not a D-bag

By Patrick Lee

ON 02/05/09

Jared Padalecki, who plays a new character named Clay in the upcoming reboot of Friday the 13th, told reporters that he's happy to play practically the only male character who's neither a hockey-masked serial killer nor a douchebag.
"I like to think that it was just me not being a douchebag, yeah," Padalecki said with tongue in cheek in a group interview in Beverly Hills, Calif., over the weekend. "No, it was nice. ... I've been the kind of douchy character, so it was nice to have a little vacation from it."

Padalecki plays a man who searches for his sister, Whitney (Amanda Righetti), in the small town of Crystal Lake. Whitney went camping with some friends six weeks earlier and hasn't been seen or heard from since. Padalecki finds himself on the run from the resident psycho who lives in the woods: Jason Voorhees, played by Derek Mears.

Following is an edited version of our interview with Padalecki, who was charming, self-effacing and cheerful despite our rude questions. Friday the 13th opens Feb. 13.

A brief excerpt:

We were on set watching you get your face smashed into the bus glass. Was that you?
Padalecki: Yeah. Do you know that really cut me up?

Really?
Padalecki: It was my forehead. That was actually funny, because they were doing that head-through-the-bus-window thing, and I was, like, how is this staying? And they're like, "Well, there's ... an inch of clear plastic or whatever [underneath]. ... So make sure you don't hit it." I was like, "OK." And so we kind of did it, and I hit it, and ... I knew my face was going to smash the glass. It was candy glass or whatever. Everybody did it before me to appease me and ease my concerns. But then we did it, and I was like, "I think [touches his forehead for blood] ... " And ... they ... looked at me. I had fake blood all over me anyway, and they're like, "No, no, no, you're good." And I was like, "You're sure? ... OK, whatever." And sure enough, we go back and wash, and I have like a little gash on my forehead. Yeah. So I cried and, you know, I sued, I sued for a sequel. Saturday the 14th? Comes out next year. [laughs]

Adam Baldwin

by Steve Heisler February 2, 2009

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we ask actors for memories about roles that defined their careers. The catch: They don't know beforehand what roles we'll ask them to talk about.

The actor: Adam Baldwin, currently the stoic, wisecrackin' government agent on NBC's Chuck, which returns from its mid-season break with a 3D episode on Monday, February 2. Baldwin is perhaps best known for playing Jayne Cobb in Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity (another largely wisecrackin' stoic role), and he got his start in 1980's My Bodyguard when he was still in high school.

A brief excerpt:

Drillbit Taylor
(2008)—"Disgruntled Bodyguard"
AB: There's a little clip out there on YouTube if you Google "Drillbit Taylor Bodyguard interview." Steve Brill, Michael J. Fox, Richard Dean Anderson, and I would all play hockey in a local actors' league together. Steve knew me from that, so he threw me in for a cameo. But I had to convince them it would be okay to let me wear the My Bodyguard jacket, which I still have. Their idea was to throw me in that cameo montage, but I figure if I'm gonna do it, I might as well do the character with the dirty white T-shirt and the jacket. It's a laugh for the parents taking their kids to see the movie who saw My Bodyguard in theaters. A friend of mine said, "Oh! I laughed when I saw it. My kids didn't get it, but I did."

AVC: Was it a retrospective moment, donning the jacket again?
AB: It still fits!
