Interview: Robert Carlyle Talks Stargate Universe Season 2, His Approach to Acting and Some Soccer

By Kevin Coll • August 2, 2010

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and sitting down with legendary screen actor, Robert Carlyle at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and man was it a treat. As many of you know I try to get informal and real with anyone I get to talk to on this site because of our mission to create a window into these talented entertainers lives. Robert was gracious enough not only to set us up for Season 2 of SGU and what to expect with his character, Dr. Nicolas Rush but also how he approaches characters in acting, the techniques he implores and finally what he does when he is not acting and working. One of the most interesting topics he discusses is his one the most emotional moments he has had in acting.

It was a real honor to sit down with one the most talented and real actors in the business today and something I will never forget. As far as SGU is concerned, Carlyle, told me that Season 2 will show us a bit more of Rush’s history but also how he finds more secrets of the ship. Lastly he and Col. Young will have some heart to heart moments off world this season that he says, “is some the best two episodes of this season.” Be vary that some of the information is spoiler-ish so feel free to fast forward if you choose but consider yourself warned.

I also got a chance to talk to series producer, Robert Cooper, briefly while waiting for my interview with Carlyle to begin and he told me that “this season we find the bridge to the ship, and there will be more aliens and this type of things explored within in the series but also you really get to see what the true mission of the Destiny really was or is.”

Season 2 of Stargate Universe is already halfway done shooting and will premiere this October on Syfy. Season 1 of SGU is now available on Blu-ray and DVD at your local retailer.

We will be posting two more interviews with Ming Na and David Blue over the next couple of weeks. As of now enjoy one the best interviews we have done on this site.

Robert Carlyle talks Stargate Universe

From Trainspotting to planet-hopping

BY Jayne Nelson Jul 7th 2010

Robert Carlyle is a legend in the Total Film office, so we jumped at the chance to pay him a flying visit on the Vancouver set of Stargate Universe.

Stargate Universe, or SGU, is the second spin-off from the TV show that was itself spun off Roland Emmerich’s blockbuster movie. Seems you can’t keep a good concept down these days.

Carlyle stars as Dr Nicholas Rush, a scientific genius who finds himself stuck on the Destiny - a millions of years old alien spaceship - along with a bunch of human refugees fleeing an attack on their base.

He’s a shifty sort, true, but he’s the only person capable of figuring out how to fly the ship – which obviously comes in handy.

To celebrate the release of the first season on DVD and Blu-ray, we had a chat with Carlyle in the ship’s infirmary set (bloodstains not pictured).

Sporting an ‘Argentina’ jacket – the World Cup was a big topic of conversation among the cast, although nobody seemed to be supporting England, unsurprisingly enough – Carlyle chatted about his new show, science fiction fans and the joys of working in far-flung Canada instead of his native Scotland...

TV Junkie Interview: Alaina Huffman of Syfy's 'Stargate Universe'

Alaina Huffman (@alainahuffman) plays 1st Lt. Tamara "TJ" Johansen on the Syfy channel's hit series, "Stargate Universe" aka "SGU" to those in the know. You have also seen Huffman as the Black Canary in The CW's "Smallville" for the past couple seasons. Huffman splits her time between the Vancouver soundstage where "SGU" is shot and Los Angeles. We had a chance to check in with her before the upcoming season finale. "SGU" airs on Fridays on Syfy at 9pm and will resume next week.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

The TV Junkie: Who from the cast have you learned the most from?
Alaina Huffman: "Oh, that's a great question. I draw so much from them all individually. There is such a sense of respect among all the actors and we genuinely all enjoy each other's company and we actually hang out quite a bit, to the extent that last season one of the producers told us to take a break from each other, "you don't have to hang out with each other every weekend" - and we're like "really, because we really like to!" So we spent quite a bit of time with each other when we were back in LA.

That being said, Robert Carlyle is such a great actor, and such a character actor - you learn so much from him. He actually directed the first episode of season two, so I was really excited to work with him because I thought if I worked with him as a director I could understand how he works as an actor. Also, Louis Ferreira, he could not be further from his character, he is so funny and easy going and loving and genuine, he's really not that stuffy Colonel Young that he plays - he does all these character voices, he's very entertaining. Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque, are such stand-up people, they're so much fun to work with. They're all such a great group, I really draw from everyone..."

Louis Ferreira talks on set relationships, pushing character boundries and pranks

One of the best things about running a site like ColonelEz.Net is every so often I get the chance to talk to some of the great cast and crew of shows like Stargate Universe.

Recently I had the opportunity to talk to Louis Ferreira (Colonel Young) about his character, working with Robert Carlyle and the moral issues of the less than perfect character he plays.

A brief excerpt:

The first thing we chatted about was playing alongside Robert Carlyle; Louis had nothing but good things to say.
LF: “One of the main reasons I was drawn to the show to begin with was Robert Carlyle’s name, I was really impressed to hear that they were going to go a different direction & When I heard his name I immediately realized that they had to, based on the type of actor that he was.”

“Between the producer’s pitch of this sort of darker, grittier more realistic version of the show and Robert Carlyle’s name I did become super interested and was really grateful when I got the job as I think I found my brother from Scotland in Robert.”
