Teyla Emmagan from ‘Stargate Atlantis’

By Michael Korb

October 28

When you’re the queen of a now primitive but once technologically advanced community traveling across galaxies in a spaceship full of human explorers, dressing for the occasion can be a challenge. There’s not exactly a Gap in outer space (well, there might be; it’s difficult to know for sure). But for Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell) of Stargate Atlantis, airing Fridays on Sci-Fi Channel, her ace in the hole is costume designer Valerie Halverson.
“Teyla was the leader of her people – the Athosians – but she has come onto Atlantis to help guide them,” says Halverson, who designs everything for the series. “We tried to get her looking more like a team member, so we gave her a sleeker, sexier uniform, but also wanted to keep an elegance about her. After all, she is a queen. I’ve always tried to convey that. She’s a regal hunter...”

Stargate: Atlantis’ Rachel Luttrell

by Jacqueline A Gross

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Rachel Luttrell is an African-born Canadian actress currently best known for her role as Teyla Emmagan on Sci-Fi channel’s Stargate: Atlantis. In broad strokes, Teyla is an alien warrior who, through her contact with the Atlantis team from Earth, takes on an active role in the fight against the Pegasus galaxy’s Big Bad: The Wraith. It would easy to write her off at the Atlantis version of SG-1’s Teal’c, but from the very beginning Luttrell impressed viewers with her range and skill. Teyla quickly became a fan favorite as Luttrell proved her to be much more than the simple “Noble Warrior” archetype.

Before landing the role on Atlantis, Luttrell earned her geek cred guest starring on Charmed and Forever Knight. Before that she studied ballet, piano, and voice in some of Canada’s most prestigious arts institutions. She’s a triple threat–but Atlantis fans are glad she stuck with acting.

With the show coming to an end, we asked Jacqueline Gross to talk with Rachel about Teyla’s evolution, how the show has changed both character and actress, and her plans for the future.

...JG: What character on the show, other than Teyla, do you most connect with?
RL: I connect with all of them in different ways; even with Woolsey there’s a connection. I mean, Teyla leaves Torin with Woolsey and trusts him to find the dad. With each of the team members she has a personal kind of affection towards them.

After Missing she has an affection for Dr. Keller. Dr. Keller rises to the challenge and she knows about the pregnancy first. And of course with Sheppard there’s a kindred spirit connection between them that’s been there from the beginning.

With Ronon there’s the great relationship that they have since he’s also from Pegasus. And the only one to share any connection to what she’s gone through. But they all are important to her in different ways...

The parallel pregnancies of Rachel Luttrell

Posted By BRIAN GORMAN, © ZAP2IT

Changing the direction of "Stargate Atlantis" probably wasn't the first thing on Rachel Luttrell's mind when she became pregnant last year.

After she announced her condition to the producers at the start of season four, she says, she expected they'd just hide her "behind large prop pieces" when she began to show.

Instead, they wrote a season-long pregnancy story arc for Luttrell's character, Teyla. And Teyla's delivery was the focus of the debut episode of season five, airing Mondays on The Movie Network in Eastern Canada and on Movie Central in the West.
"I had no idea how they were going to take the news," Luttrell says. "I knew it was slated to be a season that would be quite strong for Teyla, so I had no idea what they were going to be able to do with it. And I'm very happy with the direction it took..."

Slice of SciFi Interview with Rachel Luttrell

Posted by Sam on Sunday, 6 Jul 2008

In April 2007 we were privileged to have “Stargate: Atlantis” star Rachel Luttrell as our special guest for the online and XM-Satellite Radio Slice of SciFi Show. We had such a good time that we asked Rachel if she would come back to Slice of SciFi sometime in the future.

Since that time Rachel has given birth to a beautiful son; while on the show, her character Teyla also gave birth.

With Season Five getting ready to return this Friday (July 11) we asked our roving reporter, Linda Craddock, to visit with Rachel while she was on the set of ‘Atlantis’ in Vancouver. What resulted was this great fun interview.

A brief excerpt:

SoSf: The scene in “Quarantine” what were you doing out on the window sill?

RL: I know… what was I doing on the windowsill? I know it was probably just instinct. I was quite pregnant at the time and I remember just getting up on that windowsill while we were shooting and I remember saying ‘what am I doing?’ But everything was fine I just had a very, very active pregnancy.

Atlantis' Luttrell Juggles Momhood

Rachel Luttrell, who plays Teyla in SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis, told SCI FI Wire that she's a new mother in real life, as is her character in the coming fifth season, and that presents its own challenges.

**snippage**

Luttrell said motherhood has changed her, and she's using those changes to inform how she plays Teyla. "It's made her all the more strong and willing to go out there and do whatever she needs to do to make his world safer," she said. At the same time, she added: "You're incredibly vulnerable."

With the Wraith hybrid Michael (returning guest star Connor Trinneer) pursuing Teyla's baby for his genetic gifts, that vulnerability seems likely to be exploited in upcoming episodes. But overall, Luttrell said she's delighted that the writers chose to incorporate her pregnancy into the show. "They did a wonderful job," she said. "I think it made for a stronger, more colorful character. And it's made her all the more powerful and multi-dimensional this year."

Atlantis Focuses On Wraith

SPOILERS at the link above!

The upcoming fifth season of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will focus heavily on the Wraith--with a side trip to Las Vegas to commemorate the show's 100th episode, producers told SCI FI Wire during a visit to the show's sets in Vancouver, Canada, on May 16.

Other key developments: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) will have her baby in the fifth season. The character became pregnant last season to accomodate Luttrell's real-life pregnancy. Luttrell has given birth, so her character can follow suit. The baby is delivered on camera by....

Not everything is about the Wraith though. [Joe] Flanigan said it's his understanding that filming for the show's upcoming 100th episode will take place in Las Vegas. Though Flanigan claimed to have no more details than that, he surmised that this would probably mean the episode will have to do with the replicators.

Six episodes of Stargate Atlantis' new season are complete and filming of new episodes continues. The fifth season kicks off in July.

'Stargate Atlantis' Dresses Up For Season Five

New episodes will include a new Wraith and a new look for some Atlantis team members

By Michael Simpson | Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Members of the press were introduced to some of the costumes that will grace Season Five of the SCI FI Channel series Stargate Atlantis at a recent set visit in Vancouver attended by CinemaSpy. During the visit, costume designer Val Halverson revealed some highlights that Stargate fans can look forward to in the new season. One of the costumes that she presented was a full-length leather jacket-and-robe combination. Black in colour and regal in design, it will be worn by what sounds like a particularly unpleasant variation on a recurring menace, the life-sucking Wraith.

"One of our new Wraith that we introduce are called Wraith Hunters," said Halverson. "They've been established hunting Ronon the first time we met him. This is the new look we did for them and they are real, real nasty guys, as Wraith are. We really like the new look. A little bit different. Obviously the Wraith are very distinctive, but we added a little depth."

Look out for more reports on the set visit in the run-up to the DVD releases of Stargate Atlantis Season Four on July 8 and Stargate Continuum on July 29.

Close Up: Rachel Luttrell

May 13, 2008 (Actors)

Teyla Emmagan has shown that she can cope with anything the Pegasus galaxy throws at her – but what about motherhood? Rachel Luttrell discusses the changes that season five brings for her character.

A brief excerpt:

Teyla has faced many terrifying situations in her time as a part of the Atlantis crew: she’s been kidnapped by Michael, had her mind invaded by a Wraith Queen and faced an erupting volcano to name but a few. But this year, the Athosian has something a little more fundamentally challenging to deal with – becoming a parent.

“I think she’s completely changed,” reveals actress Rachel Luttrell, speaking from set during the filming of episode five, ‘Ghost in the Machine’. “Teyla is now a working Momma! She’s had to completely deal with a shift in priorities. She’s decided to re-join the team, but it was a large question for her. It was something that she had to spend a considerable amount of time mulling over. Now, every time she leaves the base, she’s aware of the fact that she might not be coming home to be with her son. So things are very different.”

MOTHER OF DESTINY

GateWorld Talks with Rachel Luttrell

It has been too long since our last interview with Rachel Luttrell, who has been keeping busy both on and off the sound stages of Stargate Atlantis in recent months!

Rachel gave birth to a baby boy, Caden Dar, in October of 2007. Partially due to the pregnancy, an intricate arc was threaded through Season Four involving Teyla. In our latest interview with the actress, Luttrell talks about having a meaty multi-episode story to sink her teeth into, in addition to the life-changing whirlwind that is being a parent.

GateWorld's interview with Rachel is available in MP3 audio format for easy listening, and is 12 and a half minutes long. It is also transcribed [at the link above]. You can also download the interview to your MP3 player and take GateWorld with you!

Behind the Scenes: The Kindred, Part 1

February 25, 2008 (Episodes)

`The Kindred' takes the team to a whole variety of new places – and it was down to production designer James Robbins to create them!

A brief excerpt:

`The Kindred' is an epic adventure for the Atlantis crew, picking up on the story of Teyla's lost people, her unborn baby and another of the team's arch-enemies, Michael. It's an episode that sees much of its action take place away from the City in a range of new places.

For the first episode in the two-part extravaganza, production designer James Robbins had several new environments to carry the story. There, was, for example, the facility in which Michael has been conducting his experiments, and the village Teyla's visions lead them to.

# Title Time Description

74 Rodney Makes An 'Atlantis' Proposal 1:00

Rodney wants to propose to Katie and shows off the diamond ring he picked up for her during his visit to Earth.

Stargate Atlantis' "Quarantine" airs Friday, January 18 at 10pm on the SciFi Channel (US).

I've typed a transcript and made some screenprints from Yahoo's video clip:

Transcript:

Shepard and Rodney in Rodney’s lab, Shepard is seated in front of a laptop, and may be playing computer golf:

Shep: “I can do a nine, the course is a par three.”

Rodney: “No, Katie’s expecting me.”

Shep: “Be late. Women like it when guys are late.”

Rodney: “No they don’t. And I can’t be late, not for this lunch.”

Shep: “Why is that?”

Rodney: “Can you keep a secret?

Shep: “No.”

Rodney (reaching into pocket and pulling out a ring case): “Great! I, uh, I got this on my last trip to Earth. I feel it’s time that Katie and I move the relationship to the next level.”

Shep: “Second base?”

Rodney: “No…marriage!”

Shep: “Really?”

Rodney: “Yes.”

Shep: “You do?”

Rodney: “Yes!”

Shep: “Married?”

Rodney: “What, you don’t think I’m ready? You think I’m…I’m rushing things?”

Shep: “I didn’t say that…”

Rodney: “Well, I’m not. I’m not ready to set a date or anything…”

Shep: “Is that a diamond?”

Rodney: “Yes, an eighth of a carat actually. Mounting was free. And got a good deal on it, actually”

Shep: “Oh, I’m sure you did.”

Rodney: “All right, so…(pulls off ear communication device)…here I go.!

Shep: “I’ll buy you a beer later and we can celebrate.”

Rodney: “Or drown my sorrows should she say no.”

Shep: “No, no, none of that.”

Rodney: “Right.”

Shep: “Well, go get the girl.”

Rodney: “Oh.”

Teyla (very pregnant) walks in.

Teyla: “Hello…”

Rodney, running by: “Can’t talk.”

Fight Club

November 13, 2007 (Episodes)

In this week's episode ("Missing"), Teyla Emmagan finds herself up against not one, but two groups of opponents eager to stop the Athosian warrior in her tracks. When she discovers that her people are missing and a tribe of fierce hunters called the Bola Kai now occupy their settlement, Teyla is determined to find out what happened to them. But first she has to keep herself and Doctor Keller safe until Atlantis realizes they are missing and sends help.

Teyla's fights – and, more recently, Ronon's – have always been one of Stargate: Atlantis' trademarks. They are the brainchild of James Bamford, the show's stunt coordinator. It's his job to take the writer's words from the script and realize the fight sequences for the camera.

"The script specifically said that she was armed with a stick and a knife," he says, of this week's episode. "They got the idea from previous training sequences that we'd done in other seasons. When you have a stick in one hand and a knife in one hand, there are specific techniques that are used in a fight sequence. Teyla's got her own style, so I stay with movements that we've [already] done – not completely the same techniques, we don't copy things over and over again, but I stay with her style that we've seen in the past."
