Jolene Blalock's new enterprise finds her fighting total Bug war. Would you like to know more?

STAR TROOPER by BILL WARREN

Although her ears are no longer pointed, as they were for her role as the Vulcan T'Pol on STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, Jolene Blalock is back in space as one of the stars of STARSHIP TROOPERS 3: MARAUDER, and she's happy to be there.

"My 13-year-old Matthew loved STARSHIP TROOPERS, and I was a fan, too," she says. "I believe this one will join the ranks of cult classics that we all enjoy in the SF genre. I'm extremely proud to have it as a notch on my bedpost."

She hasn't read the original Robert A. Heinlein novel, so Blalock can only compare her movie to the other two Troopers films...

STARSHIP TROOPERS 3: MARAUDER
debuts August 5 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on DVD ($27.96) and Blu-ray ($38.98). It'll also be part of a boxed trilogy set ($39.95, DVD; $89.95, Blu-ray) which includes the two previous Troopers films.

Primeval - SciFi Weekly: Cast and Crew Interview

PRIMEVAL: DOUG HENSHALL, TIM HAINES, ADRIAN HODGES

Go behind the scenes with the cast and crew of the imported blockbuster British series Primeval as they explain how they transformed the entire U.K. into Jurassic Park, and find out what made them say, "We don't have anyone kissing our dinosaurs."

[NOTE: Primeval premieres on BBC America Saturday August 9 '08 at 9pm. For more infomation, please visit the BBC America Primeval website.]

August 04, 2008

The star and creators of the hit British family dinosaur series talk about the show finally jumping the pond to U.S. audiences on BBC America

By Mike Szymanski

Will a creature jump out of the pool? Doug Henshall ("Dougie" to his pals) remains a safe distance out of the sun and away from the edge of the pool at the Beverly Hills Hilton during a recent interview. He notes that in his popular British show Primeval, a prehistoric monster of some sort could jump out of the pool and gobble up a few of the sunbathers, and after three seasons of filming the show in the United Kingdom, it keeps him a bit on the edge.

In an interview with SCI FI Weekly, Henshall is joined by co-creators Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges. Haines is the guy behind the factual series Walking With Dinosaurs, which scientifically re-creates how dinosaurs walked, looked and sounded. Hodges is now working on a remake of a post-apocalyptic remake of a 1970s TV series called Survivors, based on the SF novel by Terry Nation and scheduled to be broadcast this fall.

The trio said they hope that Primeval will catch on quickly with U.S. audiences when it kicks off on Aug. 9. Also starring Lucy Brown and James Murray, the series follows a ragtag team of scientists led by Henshall's evolutionary zoologist character Dr. Nick Cutter as they battle creatures that come through these unexplained anomalies that are ripping holes in the fabric of time.

One problem has been that both in the U.K. and the U.S., people are comparing the show, and Henshall's character, to a certain "Doctor."

Douglas Henshall, how have you been avoiding the Doctor Who comparisons during interviews here at the Television Critics Association press tour?

Doug Henshall: Well, of course Doctor Who is enormously popular where I'm from, and it's becoming known here, too. And, it's the one question I've been getting asked about the most—people comparing the show to that Doctor, and for that reason I've been comparing it to the American show that people would get, The A-Team, because it's an ensemble piece. I was mainly trying to avoid the comparison of the show we don't want to mention, and so I picked something very different, and our show is more of an ensemble like that show was. In our show our characters all have different skills and need to work together. That's how the shows are alike, we each come from different backgrounds to work together.

Adrian Hodges and Tim Haines, you have now included as one of the new writers Paul Cornell, who not only wrote for Doctor Who but also wrote more than a dozen novels about Doctor Who and his spinoff companion Bernice Summerfield. Is there any chance a Doctor Who character could pop in on the world of Primeval?

Tim Haines: No, absolutely not will we have a Doctor Who character pop in on Primeval. They have very different worlds and realities—

Adrian Hodges: Anything can happen on Doctor Who—

Haines: That's right, and the world of Primeval is more reality-based.

Hodges: Now, that doesn't mean there were a few times that we were tempted to sneak in a few sly references, like having someone say, "There's the doctor," and the "Doctor who?" But no, every time I was tempted to even put in a vague Who reference, I stopped myself. The worlds are very different. ... At one point we considered a sly Doctor reference when someone got angry at another character and threw a box set of Doctor Who at them, but we thought not.

Behind the Scenes: The Daedalus Variations

August 4, 2008 (Episodes)

Visual effects supervisor Mark Savela and writer Alan McCullogh take us behind the scenes of the Atlantis team’s reality-hopping adventure!

A brief excerpt:

“I hope fans enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it,” says writer/producer Alan McCullough of Stargate Atlantis’ latest action-packed installment.

**snippage**

The majority of the visual effects sequences in The Daedalus Variations were accomplished in-house by Mark Savela’s team, who had only just wrapped on the finals for the season opener, Search and Rescue.

“They worked their butts off on that show,” Savela laughs, in talking about his hard-working department. “It was a very complicated show for everyone involved, just in terms of screen direction and what was going on, and how much of the ship was working and what was powered up… there were lots of little details that needed to hold true throughout the episode. You couldn’t let any of that slip, because it wouldn’t look right...”

Stargate Atlantis - Cinema Spy: Exclusive Rachel Luttrell Interview

From Cinema Spy:

Exclusive Interview: Rachel Luttrell

'Atlantis' actress on motherhood and becoming a queen

By Blaine Kyllo | Monday, August 4, 2008

Rachel Luttrell, who plays the warrior princess Teyla Emmagan on Stargate Atlantis, is full of a boundless joy that spilled from her when she sat down with a table of journalists at Vancouver's Bridge Studios in May. Her energy and enthusiasm seemed at odds with the fact that she’s a new mother. Her character becomes pregnant in Season 4 of the series in part because Luttrell herself became pregnant.

Luttrell talked about Teyla’s journey, her own journey, and how the two have at times crossed. She also discussed how life has changed on set with a baby on board.

A brief excerpt:

Question: I like all the scenes with Ronon. I hope you get more.

Rachel Luttrell: Yeah, I hope so, too. We have fun. This season we’ve had a few moments.

CinemaSpy: What’s the connection? There’s a distinct connection between Teyla and Ronon. What is that for you? It’s more than simply being the outsiders. There’s more to it than that.

Rachel Luttrell: The short answer would be that the two of them are truthfully the only people who have any kind of historical - the two of them share a lot of the same kind of history, and childhood references, and even though they didn’t grow up in the same cultures, they grew up in this galaxy and so I would imagine that they can share a lot of things with each other that perhaps the other people on the team wouldn’t necessarily understand. Also given the fact that the two of them are warriors, and of this realm that we occupy. It gives them a lot. And there is a familial thing going on with them as well.

Stargate: Continuum - GateWorld: Michael Shanks Audio Interview

Daniel's Continuum

GateWorld talks with Michael Shanks

Life after Stargate SG-1 cancellation goes on for Dr. Daniel Jackson, as Michael Shanks returns to the role in this year's two DVD movies -- Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. Now that both films are available, we wanted to catch up with the actor once again to get his thoughts on these two projects.

GateWorld's Chad Colvin actually sat down with Michael in April, just hours after he had sat down to watch Continuum with the cast, crew, and a handful of fans from Creation Entertainment's Vancouver Stargate convention. In the interview he talks about both DVD movies and Daniel's role in those stories, and also gives us a status update on Rage of Angels, his upcoming project with former co-star Christopher Judge.

GateWorld's interview with Michael runs 8 minutes. Listen online at your leisure, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe to the iTunes podcast. The full interview is also transcribed [at the link above]!

A brief excerpt:

GW: If you could give one message to Stargate fans, what would it be?

MS: Thank you! Thank you for staying with us. Seeing that movie and being with fans of the franchise in that theatre. Seeing the reactions to it shows that there still is the love for those characters. That there still is a future for it. I think with "Ark of Truth" people went "Oh…okay…that's it. I guess we're done telling SG-1 stories now," and seeing this story that way. Seeing the reactions of people showed that we still very much have a future in this. And it's been a lovely ride. The fans are the reason we do it, and without them, we wouldn't be anything. So, thank you.
