Eureka: More Surprises Coming

Oh, Eureka, death by time loop? With a sweet goodbye for a major character in last week's nod to Groundhog's Day, "I Do Over," we're not only into the dog days of summer, but also the last four episodes of SCI FI Channel's original series Eureka before the mid-season break.

Thanks to special effects that included runaway intelligent anti-missile drones and malfunctioning robotic dogs, Eureka's eight summer episodes are going to have an effect on the episodes that air in 2009, creator Jaime Paglia told SCI FI Wire.
"I think we've sort of found a new balance of our humor and character stories, with some really interesting sci-fi visuals," Paglia said in an interview. "They're just some of the biggest episodes that we've ever done in terms of the science of it. We'll be paying for that in the back 13..."

Exclusive Interview: David Hewlett

The 'Atlantis' veteran on damaging the image of Canadians

By Blaine Kyllo | Sunday, August 24, 2008

David Hewlett is the de facto veteran of the Stargate Atlantis team. He’s not only got more credits than his ensemble castmates, but his character of Rodney McKay appeared regularly on Stargate SG-1.

A brief excerpt:

On Atlantis the character of McKay has expanded beyond being a comic foil or trickster-obstacle. He has become less annoying and more sympathetic, less pathetic and more flawed, an understandable transition if audiences were expected to sympathize with him as a main character. The fact that Hewlett, also a veteran of the Canadian film and television scene, gets to play McKay as a Canadian brainiac is something he derives a winking pleasure from.

At Vancouver’s Bridge Studios in May, Hewlett sat down with a group of journalists to talk about the pleasures and pitfalls of being a costar on Stargate Atlantis and what it’s like to work with his sister, Kate Hewlett, who plays Rodney McKay’s sister, Jeanie Miller.

CinemaSpy: What does it mean to play McKay as a Canadian?
David Hewlett: It’s fun, for a change, to do some damage to people’s opinions of Canadians. Every time you see Canadians on television they’re always the sweetest, nicest, not terribly bright people. They are often mounties who, by accident, rescue people. It’s nice to play the genius astrophysicist who’s actually a complete asshole as well. I think I’m doing some permanent damage to the image of Canadians, and I think it’s always fun to mix it up a bit. Especially now that I’m actually living in the States...

Hewlett: 'I'll miss McKay'

MONDAY, AUGUST 25 (ACTORS)

Atlantis co-star David Hewlett talks with GateWorld about the show's cancellation.

A brief excerpt:

Stargate Atlantis co-star David Hewlett joins us for this week's very special episode of the GateWorld Podcast (online Tuesday night), but we also couldn't resist asking him some questions about the show's surprise cancellation last week (story). Hewlett expressed his disappointment at the show's end, but is also remarkably positive about what is ahead for him -- and the chance to revisit Rodney McKay in the future.
"I'm not ashamed to say, I love McKay," the actor told GateWorld. "I think in the same way as fans, I'm going to miss him on a weekly basis. I've really had an awful lot of fun doing that part. ... McKay is definitely one of those characters that I hope is around in some way, shape, or form for a long time. Because he really is such a pleasure to play..."

A brief excerpt:

Today GateWorld has brand new story details for "First Contact" and "The Lost Tribe," the highly anticipated two-parter airing in just one month! The episodes guest star Michael Shanks as SG-1's Dr. Daniel Jackson.

"First Contact" premieres in the U.S. on Friday, September 26. Stargate Atlantis will then take a break for just one week, with "The Lost Tribe" airing on October 10. [NOTE: at its NEW time, 9pm!]

Here is how the SCI FI Channel describes these episodes...:

Stargate Atlantis - Discover Magazine: Money (and Energy) for Nothing

At Discover Magazine (New York, NY):

Money (and Energy) for Nothing

On the TV series Stargate Atlantis, the current installment from the Stargate franchise, a device small enough to be held in your hands provides the energy for an entire city. Called a Zero Point Module, the device glows with golden light and produces an almost unlimited supply of clean energy. But it seems that the ZPM is an unrealistic little gizmo because it somehow creates energy from… well, nothing, and therefore, the thing belongs in a prop room shelved somewhere between the Flux Capacitor and the One Ring. But what if it was real..?

Changing the direction of "Stargate Atlantis" probably wasn't the first thing on Rachel Luttrell's mind when she became pregnant last year.

After she announced her condition to the producers at the start of season four, she says, she expected they'd just hide her "behind large prop pieces" when she began to show.

Instead, they wrote a season-long pregnancy story arc for Luttrell's character, Teyla. And Teyla's delivery was the focus of the debut episode of season five, airing Mondays on The Movie Network in Eastern Canada and on Movie Central in the West.
"I had no idea how they were going to take the news," Luttrell says. "I knew it was slated to be a season that would be quite strong for Teyla, so I had no idea what they were going to be able to do with it. And I'm very happy with the direction it took..."

Director's Cut: The Shrine

August 25, 2008 (Episodes)

Director Andy Mikita takes us behind the scenes on the making of season five episode “The Shrine”.

The Shrine” is one of the most emotionally powerful episodes of Stargate Atlantis to date, as viewers witness McKay’s tragic mental demise. Written by Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis co-creator Brad Wright, the episode heralds the former show-runner’s welcome return to scripting the show.

Director Andy Mikita laughingly admits that the prospect of directing Wright’s return to the writing roster was somewhat daunting. Though the pair has worked together for years, there’s just something about directing a script written by one of the show’s creators.
“I have to confess I didn’t go into it quite as relaxed and comfortable as I usually would,” he chuckles. “I felt a little bit of extra pressure. And I don’t know why. It’s silly, because Brad is such a relaxed, collaborative fellow and his scripts are absolutely wonderful. This one, of course, drew an awful lot of attention because it was such a great script and there is so much for all the actors, especially David Hewlett...”

There are those who believe that life here, began out there. Far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians or the Toltecs or the Mayans. That they may have been the architects of the great pyramids or the lost civilizations of Lemuria or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive, somewhere beyond the heavens.
