Interview with Battlestar Galactica's Cally

She's one of the many Battlestar characters to contemplate suicide, and one of the few to actually get spat out of an airlock: SFX spoke to the lovely Nicki Clyne about her character Cally Tyrol when we caught up with her at Starfury's Battlestar convention in December.

Most of this interview will be appearing in our amazing Battlestar Galactica-themed special issue, on sale Wednesday 4 March with posters and gifts! But we thought you might like this snippet as a little treat to get you in the mood.

A brief excerpt:

... SFX: Everybody says Galactica was a great set to work on. How true is that really?
Clyne: "I begin to feel cheesy at times because we're all saying the same thing about how great the show is and how wonderful it is to work with everyone on the show, but it's absolutely true! We do really care about each other, and I think that's what got us through even - even though there were times when there were conflicts. It's not like we were in a fantasyland. We had real life conflicts, and people had struggles they took out on other people, whatever it may be that happens in any work or team environment."

"I think because there was such a strong vision that everyone involved was there to uphold, all the petty things just weren't important, and everyone who worked on the show really had an understanding of what we were expressing and how important it was to have an integrity in that aspect. So I think that's really what got us through. If it was a different show but all the same people, it may not have been true. I think it's a combination of finding really amazing people and talented and gifted and skilled, along with the fact that the writing, the producing, the directing was top-notch."

It's Vancouver-born Nicki Clyne's 26th birthday tomorrow, fact fans. Check out her blog when you get five minutes. And don't forget to watch Battlestar Galactica on Sky1 tonight, UK viewers!

Burn Notice - CinemaSpy: Exclusive Interview - Gabrielle Anwar

Interview: Gabrielle Anwar

The British charmer talks about her gun-toting status on 'Burn Notice'

By Blaine Kyllo | Sunday, February 8, 2009

She’s petite, she’s beautiful, and on Burn Notice, Gabrielle Anwar plays things tough as nails.

As Fiona Glenanne, an Irish expat with ties to the IRA, Anwar is more comfortable with a gun in her hand than a purse. She advises using a golf club rather than a bat for beating up on gangsters because they can be made to move faster.

It’s a bit of a departure for Anwar, who broke out in Scent of a Woman, which also starred Al Pacino and Chris O’Donnell, but the actress seems to relish her role as a tough, no-nonsense woman.

Burn Notice, which has been picked up for a third season of 16 episodes on USA, stars Jeffrey Donovan as Michael Westen, a former operative who has been functionally exiled in Miami and is trying to figure out who burned his career. Fiona Glenanne is a former girlfriend whom Westen came to know while on assignment in Ireland.

The specifics of the relationship between Michael and Fiona are ever vague, but the sexual and emotional tension between the two is palpable.

The third wheel is Sam Axe, played by Bruce Campbell, formerly a Navy Seal. Together, the trio work to help the little people who have been taken advantage of, all the while trying to help Michael restore his reputation.

A brief excerpt:

...Question: When we talk to a lot of actors and actresses they sometimes are fearful of couples getting together or not getting together, thinking about what ramifications it might have on the length or the life of the series. Do you want to see them get together? Do you want to see them stay apart? How do you want to see this relationship play out?
Gabrielle Anwar: I have to agree. I think there’s a certain amount of tension that is inevitable when a relationship isn’t really predictable. Obviously, Michael and Fiona have consummated their affection for one another. I think that the likelihood of their hooking up in a conventional manner with an engagement or a marriage or something, it’s just not in their cards. I don’t think it would appeal to either of them actually. They’re out of the box.

So I don’t think that would be an issue as far as . . . just not have any kind of predictability. I find that much more intriguing. When you start taking someone for granted in real life or in make-believe it loses a sense of passion, particularly in my eyes.

'Dollhouse' Week: An interview with Tahmoh Penikett

Welcome to Dollhouse Week. Over the next few days we'll feature a variety of posts about Joss Whedon's new FOX series, which stars Eliza Dushku as a young "doll," someone who can be implanted with any personality or skill set and hired out for missions, only to have her memory wiped and returned to a childlike state when the task is done. First up: Tahmoh Penikett, who plays an FBI agent investigating the highly illegal and seemingly mythical Dollhouse.

... Have there been any big surprises as you've gotten to know your character better?
Not huge surprises, but it's interesting thinking about the direction I got from Joss in some of the first episodes -- I was a little confused. But it's funny, coming full circle six episodes later, I completely understand why. The man's juggling a lot of things -- I'm obviously not privy to the long storyline, and he didn't always have the opportunity to share all that with me. But it was good to kind of question some of the directions and choices he was making for my character in the very beginning and seeing it make sense some episodes later.

February 9, 2009: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

So during SG-1’s final season, I came up with an outline for a time travel episode. And not your typical time-travel episode either. Building on a notion Paul [Mullie] once pitched out, I built a story on the idea of the team triggering an accident with the time-traveling puddle jumper (last scene in Good To Be King) which ends up landing them in three separate timelines: past, present, and future. As the story progresses, past events influence the present, shaping the future but both the present and future inevitably shape what has come before as well. Anyway, I had a lot of fun ideas of how the different timelines could affect each other and, rather than pitch it out verbally and risk confusing everyone, I decided to spell it all out in a color-coded outline ... that ended up confusing everyone. Hell, re-reading the thing today, there are elements that leave me confused. But, trust me - at the time, it all made perfect sense.

And so, today, I present to you a story idea that didn’t make the cut, in all of its detailed, multi-colored glory. If nothing else, consider it a fine example of a working outline. Or, better yet, consider it a fine example of a headache-inducing outline that, in the end, failed to win anyone over. Complex, yes. Confusing, you bet. But colorful like nobody’s business!
