Video Blog: Goa’uld Symbiote

May 4, 2010 by David Read

We’re starting off our week with a brand new video blog, this time featuring perhaps the most significant villain ever to Stargate lore — the Goa’uld! These parasitic serpents evolved on an alien world in the Milky Way, eventually taking primitive Unas as hosts and deciphering the Stargate to enter the galaxy.

Check out the little guy which may be yours this summer!

Stargate - Merchandise: Quantum Mechanix: Stargate Coasters

At Quantum Mechanix:

Stargate Coasters - Set of 4

NOTE: We anticipate the Stargate Coasters will be available starting 4.15.09. To be alerted when they arrive, or for possible preorder opportunities, sign-up for the QMx Insider newletter.

Carter: So you built one?
Orlin: Sort of. This won't dial multiple addresses and will only create a wormhole once and probably burn out.
Carter: And you ordered the materials online?

The lab rats at Area 51 are always looking for new applications for the alien technology being brought back to Earth by Stargate Command. Their latest innovation – the Stargate Coaster – a miniaturized stargate with its event horizon permanently fixed in place, resulting in the perfect solution for keeping your hot or cold drinks from damaging table surfaces. A problem we could only solve using advanced alien technology.

The Stargate Coaster Set comes with four (4) mini-stargates each measuring 4.57" (11.6cm) across. The stargate design is exactly screen-accurate and was taken from the CGI files used to create the visual effects for Stargate SG-1. Each glyph and chevron is perfectly reproduced, hand-cast in resin and hand-painted with a detailed paint job and weathering. The event horizon is semi-transparent blue with a rippled surface, just like the big 'gates.

So tip back a frosty one in honor of the brave men and women who every day risk it all to protect humanity. And when you set your drink down, do it in style with a Stargate Coaster – just $29.95 for a set of four.

Exclusive Sneak Peek: The Official Companion

Attention Stargate fans! Read below for an exclusive excerpt from Stargate: Atlantis The Official Companion Season 4. Now available for purchase, this is the official companion to the fourth season of Stargate Atlantis, packed with behind the scenes interviews, an episode guide and scores of photos, including a 16pp colour gallery. A must have for all sci-fi fans!
"Dead and buried and turned to dust a long, long time ago, along with everyone you ever knew. There’s no way of knowing what the state of human civilization is - whether it even still exists." - McKay

No season of a television show ever runs completely smoothly - it’s a huge machine with many cogs, some of which are bound to need maintenance now and then - but Stargate: Atlantis’s fourth season held more challenges for the producers than most. For a start, co-creator Brad Wright, who had been running the show since its launch in 2004, had finally decided that he needed a break. It was well deserved - having also launched and run Stargate SG-1 way back in 1997, Wright had been working on the franchise for a decade.

Into his place stepped the writing team of Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie. The pair had been part of the Stargate universe for a very long time, having first joined the SG-1 writing and producing team for that show’s fourth season. Since the two shows were produced side by side between 2004 and 2006, Mallozzi and Mullie were also intimately acquainted with the workings of Stargate: Atlantis, and their appointment as show runners made the transition run as smoothly as possible under the circumstances. In fact, they had been preparing for the role for some time.
"Every year Brad would say, ‘I’m exhausted, I can’t do this for another year,’" laughs Mallozzi, "and then he would come back for another year... And come back for another year!" "Finally he decided he didn’t want to do that any more," Mullie explains. "He was tired and he needed a break, and he wanted to do the Stargate SG-1 movies. And basically, we were just there. We were next in line, because we had been semi-show running Stargate SG-1. We had been running our own episodes, and about half the episodes with Robert [Cooper] ..."

Stargate Atlantis / SG1 / Universe - Merchandise: Quantum Mechanix: Replicator Chip

At Quantum Mechanix:

Stargate Low-Res Replicator Chip

This is NOT a replica. It's a real prop.

The “Low-Res” Stargate Replicator Chip was made exclusively for QMx by Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe’s prop shop Artifice Cinematic Fabrication. It’s not a replica. It’s the real thing, exactly as used on the show, and made by the same folks who made what you see on-screen:
"Over the years the replicator pieces have evolved from a single original chip hand- carved in jeweler's wax, based on a concept drawing created by the Art Dept. That first piece was reproduced to create the parts needed for the original replicator bug and the numerous pieces used for the aftermath of the bug’s demise. The current version of the replicator chip is digitally designed for better crossover with the CGI and was produced in a cut sheet form for larger set builds, as well as this polycarbonate 3D print version, used for practical close up camera shots." — Gordon Bellamy, Artifice Cinematic Fabrication (Designer and Manufacturer of Stargate's Screen-Used Props)

Part of a limited-edition run of just 500 chips, the "low-res" replicator chip is 3D printed and prepped in Artifice's shop. Artifice refers to this version of the chip as low-res due to the "roughness" of the printing. These are typically made in quantity for scenes that require piles of inert chips. For close-ups, much more expensive "high res" chips are typically employed.

We place each chip in a velvet bag and wrap that up in metalized tissue paper inside a white translucent box, perfect for isolating highly dangerous samples of Alien technology. Each chip comes with a numbered, "mini" certificate of authenticity inside the box. The entire ensemble includes one chip and costs just $24.95 for a real prop directly from the Stargate prop shop!

The Stargate "Low Res" Replicator Chip is part of QMx's Real Prop series of studio-made collectibles.

WARNING: QMx has made every effort to verify that these chips are inert. We are not responsible for any chips that spontaneous reactivate nor any damage done to your starship as a result. Handle with care.

Playing the new BSG boardgame

Some of the SFX team got their sticky hands on the new Battlestar Galactica board game last month. It's surprisingly complex, with stacks of pieces, including little plastic vipers and Cylon raiders, plus loads of different card decks. There's a 32-page rulebook and a wide board representing different areas on the Galactica, Colonial One and various planets. Cardboard counters represent civilian ships and Cylon basestars.

... The game is for three to six players and is published by Fantasy Flight Games for £34.99. There is a review in SFX 178, on sale on Wednesday 17 December.

Stargate SG-1 - Fandemonium Books: SG1: Hydra Available!

From a Fandemonium Books e-mail announcement:

STARGATE NOVELS: New book out for Christmas

STARGATE SG-1: Hydra
ISBN: 978-1-905586-10-3

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat… And if you’re looking for the perfect stocking filler for your favourite Stargate fan, then look no further -- STARGATE SG-1: Hydra is available from our website now!

Holly Scott and Jaimie Duncan are back with another fantastic STARGATE SG-1 novel, a story that pits our favourite heroes against an enemy who knows them inside out. Literally.

With a deep thread of psychological drama, STARGATE SG-1 Hydra explores the shadows within O’Neill, Jackson, Carter, and Teal'c while weaving a complex and compelling tale of action and adventure.

From the back cover of Hydra:

The faces of evil

Rumours and accusations are reaching Stargate Command, and nothing is making sense. When SG-1 is met with fear and loathing on a peaceful world, and Master Bra’tac lays allegations of war crimes at their feet, they know they must investigate.

But the investigation leads the team into a deadly assault and it’s only when a second Daniel Jackson stumbles through the Stargate, begging for help, that the truth begins to emerge. Because this Daniel Jackson is the product of a rogue NID operation that spans the reaches of the galaxy, and the tale he has to tell is truly shocking.

Facing a cunning and ruthless enemy, SG-1 must confront and triumph over their own capacity for cruelty and violence in order to save the SGC – and themselves ...

Stargate Atlantis / SG1 - Merchandise - Quantum Mechanix: F-302 Tech Specs Poster

From the QMx Insider e-mail newsletter:

The much-anticipated Serenity/Stargate con in Burbank this weekend is a major milestone for us, featuring the largest number of new products we've ever introduced on a single day, plus our biggest product launch ever: We're talking 25 x 38 inches here!

But it just doesn't seem right to leave all the loyal Insiders who couldn't be in LA completely out of the festivities. So, while nothing can beat the pure joy of spending two days surrounded by like-minded individuals on a quest to have as much fun as possible, perhaps this will soothe the sting a bit.

During the run of the November 21-23, 2008 convention, all QMx Serenity, Stargate and Black Market Beagle products will be 10 percent off when you enter this code into the coupon field on our online store: CREATION. And ordering for a few of our hottest new products will open a couple days early - just so you can get the discount on them, too.

We're extending the same discount to folks who make it to the show as well. Just tell the QMx person at the booth "I'm an Insider," and they'll take 10 percent off your total purchase price.

If you can, be sure to drop by the show and say "hi." Nothing makes us happier than meeting our customers. And you never know. We might just have a surprise or two "flying" through the booth.

F-302 Technical Specifications Poster

This high-resolution rendering, taken directly from the CG files used to produce the visual effects on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, marks the first time such detailed images of the F-302 have been published. View this beautiful ship from the top, bottom, side and front. Pore over callouts showing all the major systems and weapons.

The F-302 Technical Specifications Poster measures 17 x 22 inches and is printed on 100-lb. satin-finish paper. It retails for the low price of just $14.95.

F-302 Strategic Fighter Replica

The F-302 is the culmination of Stargate Command's effort to develop a strategic fighter/interceptor to challenge Goa'uld dominance of the air. Based on the successful X-302 prototype, which was reverse-engineered from the Goa'uld Death Glider, the F-302 is Earth's first true production starfighter and is our first line of defense against extraterrestrial threats.

Now you can own your own F-302 screen-accurate replica, taken directly from the Stargate SG-1 CGI files.

Firefly / Serenity - Big Damn Heroes Lithograph Set #1 - Now Available

From Quantum Mechinix:

Mal, Inara, Kayee and Jayne Immortalized!

Serenity: Big Damn Heroes Lithograph Set #1

$29.95

We love our captain – and the rest of Serenity's crew. That's why we called on Steve Anderson, one of the best portrait painters in the business (and creator of the Battlestar Galactica Starbuck and Number Six portraits), and asked him to capture the Big Damn Heroes in a special series of lithographs. Being a big Browncoat himself, Steve gladly agreed to take on the daunting task of capturing the personality, character and spirit of each BDH.

The result is a breathtaking series of museum-quality 13" x 19" lithographs, printed on 100-pound, satin-finish paper. The first set – featuring Mal, Inara, Kaylee and Jayne – retails for just $29.95. That's right, four lithographs of Serenity's crew, painted by one of the most renowned portrait artists working today, for just under $30.

The Fate of the Human Race Hangs in Your Closet

You know, we have never worked so hard to bring y'all a shirt before. After the extensive background checks and possibly some wiretapping (how do they know we like bananas on our pizza???), we get stuck on a Space-A flight out to Colorado, escorted to the facility itself by several well-armed airmen who probably have better things to do than babysit ThinkGeek Merchant Monkeys. We make it through multiple checkpoints, into the tunnel, and to the final cardswipe before we see our target. It's right off the visitors' waiting room, wedged between the barber shop and the Class 6. The store that has the official Stargate Command Insignia merchandise. We present to you... the t-shirt.
