Sanctuary - North Shore News: Ryan Robbins Interview

Web-first projects making an impact

By Benjamin Alldritt, North Shore News August 20, 2010

"Early on, someone said to me 'You're not good-looking enough to be a leading man and you're not ugly enough to be a character actor,'" recalls North Vancouver-based actor Ryan Robbins. "I said 'Well I can ugly myself up a little bit but I don't know if I can get any prettier.'"

Happily, that early assessment was well wide of the mark. Robbins has rarely been idle since he got into professional acting, playing a series of character roles and now looking forward to taking on that leading-man mantle.

Robbins met with the North Shore News just after returning from Comic Con in San Diego, where he represented several local television shows -- Sanctuary, Riese and the upcoming Dream Detective -- at the international pop-culture conference.

"It was absolutely bonkers," says Robbins, who plays Henry Foss in Sanctuary and Rand in Riese. "I'm not really used to the getting-recognized thing. But wow, on the panel at Comic Con, you couldn't see the back of the room. I said 'Wow, our little show (Sanctuary) is pretty popular' and someone said 'Yeah, you're in 183 countries...'"

Sanctuary season three premieres on Syfy (US) on Tuesday, September 28 at 10pm -- this season will have 20 episodes!

Warehouse 13 - Pop Culture Zoo: Lindsay Wagner Interview

Lindsay Wagner On ‘Warehouse 13′, ‘The Bionic Woman’ And Self-Help

By Joseph Dilworth Jr.
Published August 16, 2010

Transcription provided by Katrina King. Katrina is a bionic writer, except without the bionic parts.

Lindsay Wagner rose to prominence in the 1970s after acclaimed roles on Marcus Welby, MD and The Rockford Files lead to her being cast as Jaime Sommers on The Six Million Dollar Man. Originally written as a one-off character, due to overwhelming positive audience response, Wagner not only returned in a subsequent two-part story, but also starred as Jaime Sommers on the spin-off series The Bionic Woman. Since the series’ cancellation in 1978, Wagner has gone on to co-star with Sylvester Stallone in the film Nighthawks and most recently has appeared in the movies Thicker than Water, Buckaroo: The Movie and Four Extraordinary Women. She has also developed a series of workshops and techniques called “Quiet the Mind & Open the Heart”, which help people study their experiences and changing perspectives and how those have affected their lives and happiness. This week, Lindsay appears on Warehouse 13 and Joe talked her via telephone about her new role.

A brief excerpt:

PCZ: Were you aware of Warehouse 13 prior to getting the role?
LW: Actually, I wasn’t, but I think that’s probably a good sign in reference to my career, because I didn’t know about the Six Million Dollar Man either! That show was huge, just like Warehouse 13 is, so maybe that’s a good karmic thing. I just have been so busy doing other things that I’ve been doing for the last few years that I don’t watch much of anything. But when I mentioned it to my son, I said, “Have you ever heard of this? I got a call from this thing called Warehouse 13?” He goes, “That’s a really cool show!” And I went, “Oh good!” So I pulled it up on the internet, ’cause they were off season, and watched a couple episodes, and I thought that’s really fun! what a great concept! I loved the concept, it’s really fun. The performance is there, the writing … the wit … it’s really wonderful.

Stargate Atlantis - SciFi and TV Talk: Rachell Luttrell Interview

At SciFi And TV Talk:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Stargate Atlantis' Rachel Luttrell Reminices On Relationships, Going Missing And Being The Queen

When, in the Stargate Atlantis series premiere Rising, the Ancients city is in danger of being destroyed, our heroes use its Stargate to travel to Athos, another planet in the Pegasus Galaxy that, if necessary, they might be able to evacuate to. It is there that they meet Teyla Emmagen, the caring and spirited leader of the Athosian race. After one of her own kind betrays Teyla and the rest of the Athosians along with their human allies to the Wraith, she joins with the new residents of Atlantis to stop this parasitic alien race from once again culling the Pegasus Galaxy and, ultimately, reaching Earth.

As actress Rachel Luttrell grew more and more at ease playing Teyla over Atlantis' five years on the air, her character developed a close bond with her new teammates, many of whom became like family to her. How would Luttrell describe her onscreen relationships with the rest of the Atlantis crew?
"It's funny, but as you were asking that question, and I'm not joking, literally so many faces came into my mind, and the very first one was David Hewlett's [Dr. Rodney McKay]," says the actress. "I loved the relationship that Teyla had with MacKay. It was somewhat irreverent and yet lovable. My character would constantly roll her eyes, even if not physically but sometimes in her demeanor, at McKay, but it was always in a kind of affectionate way..."

From Bionics to Warehouse 13 Medicine with Lindsay Wagner

by Reg Seeton

Lindsay Wagner photo courtesy of Lindsay Wagner's web site.

To anyone who grew up in the Seventies, Lindsay Wagner needs no introduction since Wagner was one of the most popular TV icons of the time as The Bionic Woman. Together with Lee Majors as The Six Million Dollar Man, Lindsay Wagner became a role model of strength for millions of young TV fans in the Seventies. Now an advocate for natural healing practices and therapy, Lindsay Wagner steps into the Syfy world of Warehouse 13 on August 13 as Dr. Vanessa Calder, the physician who treats both the investigative team and the secret government body known as The Regents.

Ahead of the Lindsay Wagner house call on Warehouse 13, TheDeadbolt spent a few minutes with Wagner on a recent conference call to learn more about Dr. Calder and the spiritual connection that Lindsay Wagner has with Jaime Sommers, The Bionic Woman.

A brief excerpt:

THE DEADBOLT: How much of Dr. Rudy Wells [from The Bionic Woman] was there to draw from when playing Dr. Calder?
WAGNER: It never entered my mind to be honest with you. Rudy Wells was more of a physical, technical doctor and Dr. Calder is based around what’s happening today and what is generally referred to as the Energy Psychology or the Energy Medicine field. It’s working with the energy system directly to heal the physical instead of focusing so much on trying to fix the physical only...

Co-writers and BFFs themselves, this writing team wrote a female buddy comedy about two childhood friends who reunite after having gone their separate ways, titled BFF. An actor, Parise frequents the improv scene at Second City and has also written, directed and produced her own feature films. Robin is also a writer/actor and currently starring in SyFy’s Sanctuary, and he wrote a series of Roxy Hunter films for Nickelodeon. Stargate Universe Ming Na: I've never strived to be super famous

AGE is not kind to any actor. But that’s not the only factor working against 47-year-old US actress Ming-Na.

She is also a minority Asian American in white-dominated Hollywood.

Talk about a double whammy.

Macau-born Ming-Na, who moved to the US when she was four, admits that there are fewer roles “written specifically for us as Asian characters” in Hollywood.

Speaking to The New Paper over the phone from Vancouver, she said: “There will always be limitations. But I’ve never strived to be super famous.

“I just love my work and feel blessed to get a part I like. Careers like (The Golden Girls veteran actress) Betty White’s are few and far between.

“Seventy per cent of my characters have not been written for Asians, like Camile Wray (in US sci-fi TV series Stargate Universe). I’ll just keep acting because it pays the bills and keeps me busy...”

Brian J. Smith of 'SGU' 'gates to 'Orient Express'

by Curt Wagner on 07.09.10

Brian J. Smith planned to relax in New York City after he finished filming the first season of "Stargate Universe" last winter.

Before he knew it, he had booked passage on the Orient Express. Well, actually he landed a part in the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," which premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday on PBS (WTTW in Chicago).
"It came completely out of the blue," Smith told me this week during a break in shooting S2 of "SGU" in Vancouver. "I think I was in New York for like five days when my agent called ... I was really intrigued by the character."

Smith plays Hector MacQueen, the multi-lingual assistant to hateful American businessman. They board the Orient Express and cross paths with the famed detective Hercule Poirot--and with murder. (Of course I'm not going to tell you any more about it!)

Eureka - USA Weekend: Colin Ferguson Interview

Colin Ferguson talks ‘Eureka’ season premiere and reboot

July 9th, 2010 by Brian Truitt

Colin Ferguson is living a charmed life. If only he could take advantage of all of it. The Eureka star is getting all sorts of offers for directing other shows’ episodes, but being a producer this year on his Syfy series, as well as directing an episode in Eureka’s fourth season (premiering tonight), Ferguson just doesn’t have the time. It’s just as well since Eureka — which is “definitely a well-oiled machine at this point,” Ferguson says — is in for some MAJOR changes and a definite show reboot starting with tonight’s episode. The town of Eureka, a haven for genius scientists and their wacky inventions and discoveries, is celebrating its Founder’s Day, and Sheriff Jack Carter (Ferguson) and other townsfolk wind up back in 1947, where they run into a military outfit and one of those Eureka founders, Dr. Trevor Grant (played by former Battlestar Galactica mainstay James Callis). Ferguson is on vacation and spending some time visiting his parents near Toronto before heading to Comic-Con in a couple weeks, but he called in Wednesday to chat about what this season holds for him and what he has in common with the canine population. Read below for our Q&A (WARNING: Spoilery bits ahead, so you may want to hold off reading till after tonight’s episode).

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

What I like about Carter is even though we’ve had three seasons of scientific nuttiness, he still has that youthful enthusiasm for all the things going on around him. Does that cross over for you in terms of enthusiasm for something new from the writers every episode?
It comes from both of us. I think that’s what they saw in me that they see in themselves real well. I’ve always been compared to a dog as a person: “You’re just so like a dog!” Because I am. I’m loyal and I do my thing, and at the same time you’re just like, “What’s that?!” I’m always game for whatever’s going on. I know it comes for me very naturally, and the writers are always so excited. Even if it’s a terrible idea — because sometimes they are, right? — they’re like, “We got this idea! It’s going to be great! There’s this little button and it sticks in your neck…” And we’re going, “That’s a terrible idea!” Everyone is very giving with their enthusiasm and that’s very genuine.

HAVEN Star Emily Rose on Stephen King, Love Triangles and Kicking Butt

July 9, 2010 by Marisa

Syfy debuts its newest series, HAVEN, tonight (July 9) and it’s definitely worth checking out.

Emily Rose plays Agent Audrey Parker, who is sent to Haven, Maine on a case where things aren’t exactly as they seem– and that includes her own mysterious past.

Photobucket

Emily Rose

A brief excerpt:

Audrey also gets kicked around a fair deal in the pilot. Will the supernatural elements of Haven continue to get the best of her?
Yeah, I think that’s the great thing about the story is Audrey sort of finds herself getting batted around by these supernatural things that are happening in Haven. I can speak honestly here about the weather [you see on the show]– that’s reality. I deal with that on a daily basis: wind and rain and freezing temperatures. It’s always a challenge. They should have an acting school– a class– where they change the temperature in the room every five minutes because to do your scenes with all those changing elements…wind machines and leaves. And I had to do a scene in the pilot for the [big] storm and they were literally throwing clumps of dirt at my face. I was going, “I don’t know how to do this!” But yeah, I think you will see Audrey grappling with the powers in Haven and we’ll try and figure out what to do with them.

Stargate Universe - Joseph Mallozzi's Blog: Mike Banas Answers Your Questions

From Joseph Mallozzi's blog update for July 8, 2010:

(Please follow the link for the complete EXTENSIVE blog update.)

Maverick (a.k.a. Mike Banas, P.I.) fires back at ya!

When he’s not editing or working on his deck, Mike Banas is answering YOUR questions! No doubt intimidated by the fact that I would be visiting him to start work on my producer’s cut of Resurgence today, Mike magically turned around that outstanding Q&A we’ve all been waiting for. And it’s a good one. As is Resurgence, is latest labor of love. But you can judge for yourselves when it airs in about ten months.

Over to Mike…

Well, hello everyone. First off I have to thank Joe for the invitation to participate and of course thanks to all of you for your thoughtful questions.

Also, I should apologize for taking so long in answering. I usually get a bit of a breather between episodes to get caught up on emails and what not, but this time I finished Joe’s latest and greatest: “Awakening” and instantly launched into Rob Cooper’sMalice” with no down time.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

Chevron7 writes: “Questions for Mike Banas:1. What was the most challenging episode of SGU to edit?”
MB: I’d have to say, by far, the pilot – Air pts. 1 & 2. It was challenging to edit mainly because we were working with more of a clean slate in terms of ‘look’ for the show. Having no template to work from opened up a lot of possibilities. Since we were all on a learning curve it took a lot of work to find the show’s style. What made my job easier and still does today, is our incredible cast. The performances are consistently spot-on, which allows me to focus on other things while I’m putting the show together.

“2. How involved are the directors and writers in the editing process?”
MB: Very. During the shooting of an episode the editor cuts the raw footage, or ‘dailies’, alone. We do communicate quite regularly with the director and producers during the shoot but the editor produces the first cut of the show, which contains everything that was scripted. After the Editor’s Cut, the episode’s Director comes in and spends a few days reworking the cut. Often they remember things from the shoot that really grabbed them, like a particular camera angle or line reading. So when he / she is happy we release the Director’s Cut for the producers to watch and then the supervising producer (usually that episode’s writer) comes down to editing to work with me for a few days. After that it’s off to the network for their thoughts then the show gets ‘locked’, which means there will be no more picture changes, that’s when the sound and Vfx folk get busy. The whole process for the editor takes roughly a month for an hour-long episode.

“3. Is there a scene you’ve done in which you’d like a second go at it?”
MB: Yes, plenty of scenes. We have a saying: “you never really finish a show, you just stop working on it.”

“4. Any other job in the production you’d like a go at? Directing?”
MB: Sure. Directing sounds fun.

“5. What do you do for fun in your spare time?”
MB: I like to snowboard (winters off in British Columbia can be amazing).

I am also a T.V and Film addict (I’m watching “The Wrath of Khan” while I’m typing this – Kirstie Alley!).

“6. What music do you like?”
MB: I grew up in the eighties listening to and going to punk rock shows. My tastes have broadened, but I am still drawn to bands that exist more or less on the fringe. Current favs are “Future of the Left” from Wales and “Titus Andronicus” from N.J.

“7. I’m curious about the editing for the SGU ep Lost compared to Pain. The scenes going back and forth between the characters in Lost was more abrupt than in Pain…what was the reasoning behind this? While I liked Lost it felt a bit like a tennis match…Pain I loved! The transition between scenes was brilliant. Thanks for you hard work…you should get on twitter with is..”
MB: Unfortunately I can’t really speak to the editing of “Pain” or “Lost”. We have a three-editor rotation, so I cut every third show. Rick Martin and Brad Rines (two of the best editors in Canada) cut those shows respectively. What I can say is every episode is unique and the script and material more than anything dictates the style.

As far as joining Twitter.…maybe….perhaps….well….the thing is, the idea of spending more time on my computer or phone than I already do scares me.

... Well I think that’s it for me. I thank you all for your awesome questions and I appreciate the interest in what we do. People tend to forget about postproduction because we work in dark little rooms by ourselves like trolls. So it’s nice to shed a bit of light on the process now and then.

Thanks go out to Joe for setting this up. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing editing department:

Jon Anctil who keeps the shows coming and going on time. Troy Mac Neill who manages to keep a very complicated system running well. Bob Dewald whose eagle eye catches every potential problem. Ryan Malone and Steve McLeod for having to deal with me every day. Kerry McDowall who keeps the train on the track. And, of course, Jen Johnson who keeps us all in line.

A brief excerpt:

Your character, Camille Wray, is a bit of an audience splitter. She’s caught between the civilians and the military, tries to be a peacemaker and it doesn’t work out...
MN: "It’s interesting because this is the first character where I’ve had to find and justify her... political ambitions, let’s say. She manipulates but to, I think, the good of the civilians. So she will manipulate situations or befriend whomever she needs to get everyone home. Ultimately her ambition is a good one, because she wants to get home! But sometimes, yes, it clashes with the military and it causes mutinies. I think it’s great fun! Nothing like a little mutiny to get things going! [Laughs]"

Stargate Universe - Collider: Remi Aubuchon Exclusive Interview

Executive Producer Remi Aubuchon Exclusive Interview PERSONS UNKNOWN

by Christina Radish Posted: July 5th, 2010

From Academy Award-winning writer Christopher McQuarrie and executive producers Heather McQuarrie and Remi Aubuchon, Persons Unknown is NBC’s one-hour mystery drama, in which a group of seven strangers must come together to solve the puzzle of their lives.

All of them have been taken from their families and have arrived in a deserted town with no recollection of how they got there, and they must rely on each other to get out. While being held hostage, the strangers are constantly watched by security cameras with no idea who or what is behind them, and every attempt to leave is thwarted by unforeseen circumstances. At every turn, these strangers are threatened physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Showrunner Remi Aubuchon recently talked exclusively to Collider about developing the 13-episode series, figuring out how to gradually reveal the show’s mysteries to viewers and what he loves about the sci-fi/mystery genre. He also promises that fans will be freaked out by the end and that they’ll never see it coming.

Photobucket

Photo of Remi Abuchon courtesy of Joseph Mallozzi's blog

A brief excerpt:

... What is your involvement with “Stargate Universe”? Are you on that as a writer?
Remi: I’m on it as a writer and a consulting producer. I’ve always liked that show, and I was happy that they were looking for an extra person. It seemed like a good match. I’m having a blast.

... As a producer and a writer, how much can you take on at one time, before you start to feel overwhelmed?
Remi: I have found that I can definitely do two things at once. If I can schedule them properly, I can even try to squeeze in three. After that, I’m gone. I once had a year where I was writing two pilot scripts, working on a show and supervising another writer doing a pilot, and I was afraid, during the whole time, that I was going to piss someone off, and I ended up actually really making myself crazy and mad.

So, I’ve decided that my ideal is two things at once. With that, I’m pretty happy. I’m working on “Stargate Universe” and I do have two pilots that I’m writing for next year, but I’ve told everybody that I have to spread them out. I’ll be done with “Stargate Universe” in October, and I’ll be delivering one pilot script by the end of the year, and then another script by the first of the year. That’s how I’ve done it.

I’ve also been doing this for awhile now. Early in my career, I was just afraid that no one would hire me again, so I wanted to do whatever it was that was brought before me. Now, I’m a little more discerning and want to do things well, one at a time. That’s easier for me.

Stargate Universe - GateWorld: Brian J. Smith Interview

Leader In Training

Photobucket

by Chad Colvin
Thursday - July 1, 2010

Now well into his second year of filming, Stargate Universe actor Brian J. Smith has brought a definite sense of passion and intensity to his character, Lt. Matthew Scott. He’s a leader in training, a young officer who is called upon to protect the crew of the Destiny and to serve as an example of the best that the ship’s military contingent can be — even (and especially) in the midst of crisis.

GateWorld recently chatted with Brian at the official Stargate convention in Vancouver, hosted by Creation Entertainment. We discussed such topics as fandom and Internet anonymity, Matt’s relationship with Chloe, his character’s potential for growth, and the climactic SGU season ender.

Season Two of SGU is now filming and will premiere this October! Season 1.0 is available on DVD and Blu-ray, and Season 1.5 arrives in July.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

GW: His loyalties are never divided; he’s clearly on Young’s side. But he’s still willing to give that certain amount of whatever to Rush in order — because he feels like Rush is the key to getting home.
BS: Scott is an emotional leader. I think his leadership style is much more emotional, so he’s much more bound to be loyal. He may also be more impulsive in a way, tend to get a little more hot-headed.
Scott comes upon the element his crew needs to survive.

But he’s learning. And even seeing where they’re taking him in the second season is really, really exciting, because there’s some qualities that are coming out in him that I really, really like and I’m glad to see explored. Because right now, him and Greer — they get the dirty work done for Young. Young makes the decision and Scott and Greer [execute it], along with the rest of the military personnel. It’s like Young is the director and Greer and Scott are the assistant directors. We’re the ones that go out and try to make the vision a reality.

So it’s going to be interesting to see if Scott gets to a place where decisions that he makes start to affect storylines, and if he’s able to change the course of an episode or how things turn out. That’ll be exciting to see...

Warehouse 13 - Pop Culture Zoo: Allison Scagliotti Interview

Searching For Artifacts With Warehouse 13′s Allison Scagliotti

By Joseph Dilworth Jr.
Published July 3, 2010

Allison Scagliotti has been acting for nearly a decade now, appearing in high profile roles on series such as ER, One Tree Hill, CSI and Smallville. In 2009 she was cast in the recurring role of Claudia Donovan on the Syfy series Warehouse 13. The show quickly became Syfy’s biggest hit series and Claudia became a hit with fans. Warehouse 13 begins its second season on Tuesday, July 6th with Allison returning as a full-time cast member. Joe caught up with Allison recently to talk about how she got the role, shooting in Toronto and little bit of what’s to come in season two.

A brief excerpt:

PCZ: Are you at all surprised at the fervor Warehouse 13 has garnered?
AS: Yeah, in the best possible way. From the beginning it took me by surprise, I had no idea what to expect. For one, I started acting professionally when I was eleven and the first three things I did were TV pilots that didn’t get picked up, so I got used to working without anyone seeing it and so I could go to a mall and not have my shirt tugged on by a little kid. When I joined the cast of Warehouse it was sort of the same thing. I expected to go and work with amazing people and have a great time, but I had no idea what kind of fan universe explosion I was going to get into. It was really evident at Comic-Con last year! Fan fervor is nothing to shake a stick at and it warms the heart, really. Every time I go to a convention, and I haven’t been to a lot of them, but the two that I’ve been to I love. I think that the whole fanboy culture, for all of the jokes one can make about it and it is screaming to be joked about, I think it is incredibly healthy. It warms my heart to see cosplay people running around because it’s this group of people coming together to geek out over something they all really like, it’s super positive and a great way for people to connect and meet new people who are into the same things and I like it a lot.

But in reference to the show, as actors we’re really removed from the whole distribution machine. We shoot these episodes months before they air, then they go through the editing process and things are cut or reworked and improved with special effects and music and what comes out in the end is very far from where our heads were when we were making it. One can never tell what someone’s response to it is going to be so it was such an incredible surprise to have the show embraced as much as it was last year and I hope we get the same response this year. I think we will. We seem to have hit our stride, I really, truly believe that. The writers have found the groove and have found out what works. We definitely have the average four million viewers to thank for our season two pick up and the massive product campaign that’s going to be enacted this summer...

Five questions with Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly of Syfy's 'Warehouse 13'

Wednesday, Jun. 30, 2010

by David Martindale

Now that Eddie McClintock, one of the stars of Syfy's Warehouse 13, has experienced what it's like to have a hit TV show, he doesn't want the feeling to go away. "How about a 15-year run?" he asks. "I think there are enough story possibilities to keep us going that long." McClintock stars as Secret Service Agent Pete Lattimer alongside Joanne Kelly as Agent Myka Bering. It's their job to chase down cursed, haunted and bad-juju artifacts and to keep them locked away in a top-secret facility in South Dakota. Season 2 of Warehouse 13, the highest-rated series in Syfy history, begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A brief excerpt:

How gratifying is it that the show has become the network's biggest series ever?
Kelly: You create these things in a bubble. You have no idea if people will be welcoming or if they'll enjoy it. So it's an incredibly validating feeling to have people respond the way they did.

McClintock: This was my 10th pilot. People kept telling me not to give up. Not that I ever entertained the notion of quitting, because I don't know what else I would do. But it's great to finally get one that made it. I can't believe how lucky I am.

Upping the Ante In Stargate Universe Season Two

SFXCLUSIVE The show's producers tease where they'll be taking the story on the characters in the second season.

Stargate's Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper

Things reached a nadir of bleakness by the end of the first season of Stargate Universe with the interstellar thugs known as the Lucien Alliance taking over our heroes' ship by extreme force, leaving the good guys quite literally on their knees, and a defiant Colonel Young dealing with the news that ex-lover TJ (who was carrying their child) lay dying elsewhere on the ship. But that could all be a afternoon in the park compared to what the producers have lined up for season two, they reveal in an exclusive interview in SFX198.
Long-running Stargate stalwart Brad Wright promises that escaping from the Alliance is going to be a messy business. "When you try to adopt a more realistic tone, where frankly we don't win every time, then there have to be real world repercussions like death and injury and loss. You can dig deeper into characters and the deeper you dig the repercussions can get bigger. We are going to some places with these characters, and already have really, that we would never go with the heroes of our other series..."
