Stargate Atlantis - Stargate Novels: Nightfall is launched

From a Fandemonium Books e-mail announcement:

Dear Stargate fan,

James Swallow
is back with another action-packed Stargate adventure — STARGATE ATLANTIS: Nightfall.

For more info

Well-known for his Warhammer and Star Trek books, James is also a huge Stargate fan. The theme of his latest book may be deception and lies, but the writing is as true to the characters as only a true fan of the show—and über-author—can get.

James's previous Stargate novels are Stargate SG-1: Relativity and Stargate Atlantis: Halcyon and they have proven hugely popular with our fans.

From the back cover of Nightfall:

The rock of Aegis…

Deception and lies abound on the peaceful planet of Heruun, protected from the Wraith for generations by their mysterious guardian — the Aegis.

But with the planet falling victim to an incurable wasting sickness, and two of Colonel Sheppard’s team going missing, the secrets of the Aegis must be revealed. The shocking truth threatens to tear Herunn society apart, bringing down upon them the scourge of the Wraith. Yet even with a Hive ship poised to attack there is much more at stake than the fate of one small planet.

For the Aegis conceals a threat so catastrophic that the Atlantis team must risk everything to eliminate it from the Pegasus galaxy...

Stargate SG1 / Atlantis - GateWorld: Author Sally Malcolm Audio Interview

At GateWorld:

STORIED SUCCESS

GateWorld talks with Sally Malcolm

Since June of 2004, U.K.-based Fandemonium has regularly published full length, original Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis novels, including Elizabeth Christensen's 2008 Scribe Award winner, "Stargate Atlantis: Casualties of War."

Sally Malcolm is the joint-owner of Fandemonium, along with her husband, Tom, and she is the publisher's Chief Editor. She recently joined GateWorld for a discussion of Fandemonium's history, their process in working with MGM, and their future goals as a company. Sally also talks about writing her own Stargate novels and watching Michael Shanks perform "Gift of the Gods," the script Sally wrote for audio book publisher Big Finish.

You can learn more about the many novels Fandemonium has published in GateWorld's Books section, and visit their Web site at StargateNovels.com!

GateWorld's interview with Sally Malcolm runs about 25 minutes. Listen online at your leisure, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe now to the iTunes podcast! The full interview is also transcribed [at the link above].

A brief excerpt:

GW: You mentioned that you work closely with MGM. Can you talk to us about what the normal process is like in submitting a book to MGM, and then how you work with them as the book is being written and is ready to be published?
SM: Sure. The first thing we get [from the author] is a one-page outline that comes to me, and if I like it and think we haven't got a book too similar, I'll ask for a 4,000-word outline of the story, which goes to MGM. They look at that and make sure it ties in with the feel of the show, and hopefully there's not too much of an overlap with upcoming episodes. Although, we have recently had a problem with a book that is going to be published soon by James Swallow -- and it's an excellent book, and we are publishing it and it's a wonderful book -- I'm not going to say what, but there's an element to it which has recently appeared in an episode.

Stargate SG-1 - Fandemonium Books: SG1: Hydra Available!

From a Fandemonium Books e-mail announcement:

STARGATE NOVELS: New book out for Christmas

STARGATE SG-1: Hydra
ISBN: 978-1-905586-10-3

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat… And if you’re looking for the perfect stocking filler for your favourite Stargate fan, then look no further -- STARGATE SG-1: Hydra is available from our website now!

Holly Scott and Jaimie Duncan are back with another fantastic STARGATE SG-1 novel, a story that pits our favourite heroes against an enemy who knows them inside out. Literally.

With a deep thread of psychological drama, STARGATE SG-1 Hydra explores the shadows within O’Neill, Jackson, Carter, and Teal'c while weaving a complex and compelling tale of action and adventure.

From the back cover of Hydra:

The faces of evil

Rumours and accusations are reaching Stargate Command, and nothing is making sense. When SG-1 is met with fear and loathing on a peaceful world, and Master Bra’tac lays allegations of war crimes at their feet, they know they must investigate.

But the investigation leads the team into a deadly assault and it’s only when a second Daniel Jackson stumbles through the Stargate, begging for help, that the truth begins to emerge. Because this Daniel Jackson is the product of a rogue NID operation that spans the reaches of the galaxy, and the tale he has to tell is truly shocking.

Facing a cunning and ruthless enemy, SG-1 must confront and triumph over their own capacity for cruelty and violence in order to save the SGC – and themselves ...

Stargate SG1 / Atlantis - Update on Big Finish Audio Dramas

At author James Swallow's live journal update for November 23, 2008:

(Please follow the link for the complete update.)

Jaffa Fight Club

... This week just gone I've been in the recording studio working on the second series of Stargate audio adventures for the good people at Big Finish productions [Click Here to learn more].

First Prime is my third script for the audios, a Stargate SG-1 story featuring Christopher Judge as Teal'c and guest-starring Noel Clarke, the aforementioned ex-boyfriend of Rose Tyler, star of Kidulthood, Adulthood and a blazingly talented actor/writer/director.

Part of First Prime's plotline involves Teal'c and Noel's character Sebe't fighting with staff weapons, but without Chris in the studio, someone had to be his radio stunt double for some of the combat scenes - cue Jim. And so, I got to be Judge's stand-in, snarling and grunting, making oof! and rargh! noises. It's nice work if you can get it.

Apparently I was so good at it - or maybe it was just that I was the only spare body in the studio, who can say - that when Neil Roberts (who recently appeared in my Doctor Who audio Kingdom of Silver) came in to give his sterling performance in the forthcoming Stargate Atlantis audio The Kindness of Strangers, I got tapped once again, this time to play Doctor Carson Beckett, in lieu of Paul McGillion. Everyone was very generous about my attempts at a Scottish accent.

From James Swallow's blog, Red Flag, update for June 1, 2008:

http://jmswallow.livejournal.com/59190.html

Stargate SG-1: Shell Game available now!

As mentioned [previously], I recently wrote a Stargate SG-1 audio drama starring Claudia Black (in the role of Vala Mal Doran) and Michael Shanks (as Daniel Jackson) for Big Finish Productions; I'm pleased to say that the direct digital download release has just gone on-line several weeks ahead of schedule, and is available for purchase by clicking here. I believe the CD version is currently being pressed and will be in shops by the end of the month.

http://www.bigfinish.com/trailer/487fae87-9a84-4ef5-8587-52f3e143ade2.mp3 )

I'm really pleased with the way Shell Game turned out; there are some great performances from Claudia and Michael, good work by our audio ace Steve Foxon, a neat cover by Alex Mallinson and some spot-on direction by Sharon Gosling. I'll be returning to Stargate audios in the coming months with an Atlantis tale called Zero Point, featuring David Nykl (as Radek Zelenka).

I'm pleased to be able to post this new piece of cover art today, freshly approved by MGM. A big round of applause for our designer and art hero Alex Mallinson...

Stargate Atlantis / SG1 - Big Finish: The Missions Continue

From Big Finish Productions:

http://www.bigfinish.com/news/STARGATE-SG-1-AND-STARGATE-ATLANTIS

BIG FINISH NEWS

STARGATE SG-1 AND STARGATE ATLANTIS

(25/02/2008)

THE GATE IS STILL OPEN, THE MISSIONS CONTINUE

BIG FINISH PRODUCTIONS TO LAUNCH A NEW RANGE OF FULLY AUTHORIZED `TALKING BOOKS' FEATURING THE ORIGINAL STARS OF STARGATE SG-1 AND STARGATE ATLANTIS TELEVISION HIT SERIES

LONDON -- UK-based Big Finish Productions, which specializes in producing high-quality audio drama and talking books on CD, has signed an agreement with MGM Consumer Products to release a new range of licensed audio books based on the record-breaking TV series Stargate SG-1 and its sister show, Stargate Atlantis.

An initial series of six productions will be released monthly, beginning in April of this year. Each release will feature a new story read by one of the regular cast members of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis along with a supporting actor. The productions will be available on a single CD and as an MP3 file as part of Big
Finish's new online download service.

The first title in the series is Stargate SG-1 Gift of the Gods written by established Stargate novelist, Sally Malcolm. The SG-1 adventure, read by Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson), unravels the mystery of the Stargate Command and its connection to an alternate reality.

Shanks, a Sci-Fi and Stargate fan-favourite, was delighted to take part in the first instalment of this new series and stated: "Sally's story is incredible and it's fun for me to have Daniel Jackson kind of pop out again. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I can't believe no one has thought of it before!"

Writer Sally Malcolm believes Daniel Jackson was the perfect choice for the first drama: "Daniel was an obvious choice as the lead because his voice is so strong and distinctive, and because he's a historian and a chronicler of events it worked beautifully to have him tell the story. He's also a very empathetic character, so through his eyes we get to observe the feelings of all the other characters which gives the story a more rounded emotional resonance".

Stargate SG-1 – Gift of the Gods is directed by Sharon Gosling who also serves as producer of the talking books series and has written several books on Stargate. "I was so excited when Michael said he was interested in being involved," says Sharon. "He was one of the first actors to say yes, not only to providing the lead voice for a story, but also to being a 'supporting voice' in one of the later releases as well. As a result, we were able to have one story set in season
three, with the `original' team, and one set in season ten, featuring Daniel and Vala (Claudia Black)". Also confirmed for the new audio books is Torri Higginson with further names to be announced.

Sharon Gosling and James Swallow have contributed two stories for the audio series, with Sally Malcolm also contributing a further story.

Each Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis release will cost £9.99 on CD or £8.99 to download. The CDs will also be available in bookshops as well as specialist outlets such as Tenth Planet, Forbidden Planet and Galaxy 4.

Stargate SG-1, the longest running Sci-Fi series in American television history, aired for a remarkable ten seasons. The show enjoyed a milestone 200th episode and Stargate Atlantis its spin-off series, is currently in production on season 5 and will celebrate its 100th episode this year.

Stargate Atlantis / SG1 - More information on Stargate Audiobooks

From the Official Stargate SG1 / Atlantis Magazine, issue 20, page #9:

Stargate SG-1

Audio Books Are Go!

Big Finish Productions:

http://www.bigfinish.com/

and MGM have partnered up to produce a series of Stargate SG1/Atlantis audiobooks read by the cast themselves, and written by your favorite Stargate fiction authors! Big Finish, best known for producing classic Doctor Who audio adventures with the original cast, have commissioned a series of one hour dramas, featuring one main and one secondary character. The inaugural recording took place on October 29 at a very exclusive location in West London, attended by writer Sally Malcolm, producer/director Sharon Gosling, the Official Stargate Magazine and one Michael Shanks!

In the country for his recent Collectormania convention, Shanks was only too happy to spend a little time with long-time alter ego Daniel Jackson.

"Sally's story in incredible and it's fun for me to have Daniel Jackson kind of pop out again. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I can't believe no one has thought of it before!"

The first audiobook to be recorded was "Gift of the Gods," a Daniel-centric story involving the Goa'uld, and alternate reality and a mysterious and beautiful box.

Writer Sally Malcolm believes Daniel Jackson was the perfect choice for the first drama.

"Daniel was an obvious choice as the lead because his voice is so strong and distinctive, and because he's a historian and a chronicler of events it worked beautifully to have him tell the story. He's also a very empathetic character, so through his eyes we get to observe the feelings of all the other characters, which, hopefully, gives the story a more rounded emotional resonance."

Claudia Black has already signed on to read "Shell Game," by Stargate fiction author James Swallow, and Producer Sharon Gosling is in discussion with other Stargate regulars for future releases.

"I was so excited when Michael said he was interested in being involved. He was one of the first actors to say yes, not only to providing the lead voice for a story, but also to being a "supporting voice" in one of the other releases as well. As a results, we were able to have one story set in season three, with the "original" team (Michael's impressions of his fellow cast members are brilliant), and one set in season 10, featuring just Daniel and Vala."

Due for worldwide release in April 2008, "Gift of the Gods," will be available on CD and online download. For more information on the Stargate Audiobooks to go:

Stargate Atlantis / SG1 - Stargate - The Audio Adventures

From Fandemonium author James Swallow's live journal:

http://jmswallow.livejournal.com/

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

21 December 2007 @ 12:06 pm

Stargate - The Audio Adventures

I've been keeping this under wraps for a couple of months, but now the news has broken thanks to actor Michael Shanks (see Here) and the release of issue #20 of the official Stargate Magazine.

It is with great pleasure and not a little enthusiasm, I can say that Big Finish Productions, known for their excellent Doctor Who, Tomorrow People, Sapphire & Steel, 2000AD and Dark Shadows audio drama series are bringing the worlds of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis to the audio realm - and I'm one of the writers.

More information will be up on BF's site soon; six titles (three SG-1, three Atlantis) have been announced for 2008. It's my understanding the plays will be available via download or on disc. There may be bonus content on the discs; but don't quote me on that.

**snippage**

If you'd like to know more, as mentioned there's a piece in the new Stargate Magazine - and issue #20 also features "Outsiders", an SG-1 short story by me...
