Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy Talks About Fringe



In part two of Fringe‘s second season finale, Over There, Part 2 (airing Thursday, May 20th @ 9:00 p.m. EST/PST on Fox), sacrifices will be made and both universes may never be the same again after Walter (John Noble) and Olivia (Anna Torv) visit the “other side.” Leonard Nimoy reprises his recurring role as Dr. William Bell in this episode. The actor, who has announced his retirement from both acting and directing, recently spoke with myself along with other journalists about his work on the episode as well as other topics. The following is an edited version of that Q & A. Enjoy!

A brief excerpt:

I’m wondering what it is that brought you to appear on Fringe. Are you watching this show? Did somebody approach you about being on there? Was there a specific role set up for you?

LEONARD NIMOY - I had a wonderful time working on the new Star Trek movie with J.J. Abrams, who directed it. When it was done, he asked me to look into the possibility of playing William Bell on Fringe. I was frankly not terribly aware of what it was all about. I began looking at some episodes that William Bell, the character, had been talked about rather frequently, but had never been seen. I felt that I owed J.J. a favor. He did a great job on the Star Trek movie and treated me extremely well. I’m very happy I did it. The work on Fringe has turned out to be exciting and interesting. It’s a terribly well produced series. The character was a wide open canvas for me to work with. I had a great time doing it. This week’s episode is particularly special for the William Bell character...

As a follow-up to my review of Unspoken Truth last Friday, I was able to interview author Margaret Wander Bonanno to talk about Star Trek and her latest novel! Margaret’s official website can be found at: http://margaretwanderbonanno.com.

A brief excerpt:

Can you tell us a bit about Unspoken Truth in your own words?

It’s a little slice of Saavik’s life that begins with the scene in The Voyage Home where we see her standing beside Amanda at the foot of Mount Seleya watching the Bounty carrying her crewmates depart for Earth.

She’s very young, more traumatized than she realizes following the events on Genesis, and uncertain what to do with her life. In trying to run from her demons, she rushes headlong into what she thinks will be a very ordinary scientific expedition. Instead, she ends up as part of a controversial first-contact mission, and embroiled in the hunt for a serial killer who’s simultaneously stalking her.

I’ve also filled in bits of her childhood and adolescence, as suggested in Carolyn Clowes’ The Pandora Principle. Lots of interplay between her and Spock, Sarek, and Amanda. And, lastly, a bit of a love story, and her final decision about where she wants to go with her life.

So, a mini-biography, in a sense. Not as sweeping as Pike’s story in Burning Dreams, but filling in the blanks between Saavik’s last appearance onscreen, and what other authors (notably Sherman and Shwartz in Vulcan’s Heart) have done with her in other novels.

Candice Bergen, Star Trek Creator Gene Roddenberry Among Hall of Fame Inductees



Candice Bergen, Charles Lisanby, Don Pardo, Gene Roddenberry, the Smothers Brothers and Bob Stewart will be inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2010. Induction gala set for January 20 in Beverly Hills.

Actress Candice Bergen, art director Charles Lisanby, Saturday Night Live program announcer Don Pardo, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, entertainers Tom and Dick Smothers and producer Bob Stewart are the next inductees into the Television Academy's Hall of Fame, Television Academy chairman and CEO John Shaffner announced today.

"Each year, the Television Academy has the privilege of honoring television greats that have contributed to the development and success of this ever-evolving medium," Shaffner said. "This year's inductees have challenged and shaped popular culture, changed television for the better and entertained us royally while doing so. We are very pleased to be able to induct them into the Hall of Fame for their many achievements."

The 2010 inductees, selected by the Hall of Fame Committee, will be honored at a special ceremony on Wednesday, January 20, at the Beverly Hills Hotel:

... Gene Roddenberry created the ever-flourishing Star Trek franchise — 10 theatrical movies, seven television series and numerous merchandising and ancillary businesses — all of which maintain the late producer's vision of the future.

Two-time Primetime Emmy Award-nominee Roddenberry, affectionately referred to as the "Great Bird of the Galaxy," led a life as colorful and exciting as almost any high adventure fiction. It wasn't until 1966, when Roddenberry created and produced the original Star Trek, that he found his voice in Hollywood. Once Star Trek debuted on television, it developed a loyal following as fanatical viewers grew to love the starship Enterprise and its crew.

Roddenberry served as a decorated Second Lieutenant during World War II, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal...

A Star Trek story of female inspiration

"To boldly go where no man has gone before." That was the end of the opening narration for the iconic Sci Fi TV series Star Trek. The modern narration now touts "where no one has gone before." With the new Star Trek film garnering such buzz, SheKnows thought we would take you back to the beginning.

Star Trek the TV show ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969. Back in the era of go-go boots, the Vietnam War and bra-burnings, with the exception of one Russian cosmonaut, women weren't ‘going’ into space. In fact, women rarely even went into the boardroom unless it was as a secretary to take notes.

A very notable exception to that rule is my mentor and friend Dorothy Catherine (DC) Fontana.

... Fontana is currently teaching screenwriting to the Fellows at the prestigious American Film Institute in LA while actively continuing her writing career in various media including online series, video games and comics. She recently was inducted into the American Screenwriters Association Hall of Fame and, in 2006 was honored by the She Made It program for outstanding women in radio and TV at the Museum of Television and Radio.

With the new Trek film coming out this week, SheKnows.com felt it was especially appropriate to chat with this inspiring, amazing woman about her long career and gather some entertaining classic Star Trek insider info on cast, costumes, make-up, pranks and fave episodes etc. Let's go back to yesteryear. SheKnows: Of the characters that you created for classic Trek, which one is closest to your heart and which one was the hardest to get on paper and get right?

Fontana: Well, I loved Amanda and Sarek, Spock's parents really and the character that Jill Ireland played in This Side of Paradise. Journey To Babel is my absolute favorite show that I wrote because everything went so well on that one. It really was fun. It was mostly a bottle show and so we could spend money on good actors and get the party scene right, all of those things.

SheKnows: And then getting Jane Wyatt to play Amanda was so great.

Fontana: Oh, she was so lovely, so wonderful. Mark Lenard (who played Spock's father Sarek) was very imposing -- a good actor that died too soon. But they had a little chemistry going on between them, too, because you could feel that they liked each other as people and that came across in the characters, I think...

It’s the movie Star Trek fans have been waiting for, JJ Abrams’ take on the origins of the Starship Enterprise crew as they meet each other for the first time. Casting the younger versions of such iconic characters was not easy, and perhaps the hardest role to fill was Captain James Kirk, but Chris Pine does a superb job.

A brief excerpt:

JJ has said that he gave the actors liberty to recreate the characters, what qualities about William Shatner did you try to encompass?:

I used the script that Alex Kurtzmen and Bob Orci wrote as kind of my bible, and that gave me my back story in the sense of who this guy was and why he was who he was. I did go back and watch the series, and what appealed to me about William Shatner’s performance, and what I could use without hitting people over the head with a bad impression, were little physical characteristics, the way he moved about the deck of the ship, he’s got a very theatrical quality that made me smile every time I watched it.

Zachary Quinto Interview

In the new Star Trek movie, which chronicles the early lives of Captain James Kirk, and the half-human Vulcan, Spock, there are two actors embodying the character of Spock, Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who has been playing the role for over 40 years.

A brief excerpt:

Did you study Leonard to see how he played Spock?:

Leonard and I watched a couple episodes together and talked about his experience shooting those episodes, but aside from that I felt that it was incumbent upon me to determine my own relationship with this character. That was the mandate that J.J. set forth very early on in the process. We were expected to use the foundation as a point of entry into our experiences with the characters.

JJ ABRAMS:

Casting the movie was a huge challenge and we were incredibly luck to find these actors. I’ve never had to cast something that pre-existed it, where the actors have to take over these iconic roles. I said to all the actors, ‘Please do not do impersonations of any of these actors. This is all about you owning it, and the only way it’s going to work is if you are free to do your own thing.’

There’s no doubt about it: Zachary Quinto has some very big ears to fill in the new Star Trek reboot. But, perhaps logically, the Heroes baddie makes for an ideal younger Spock in a performance that has earned him praise from no less than Leonard Nimoy. Ian Spelling caught up with Quinto on the eve of the nationwide release of Star Trek.

A brief excerpt:

The Shatner-Nimoy-Kelley chemistry was key to much of the success of the original Star Trek. How was the Pine-Quinto-Urban chemistry?

The entire cast chemistry is, safe to say, really genuine. Everybody in this movie does such a great job, it’s exciting to watch. All of us came from different experiences but there was such a unity right away. And I think that comes across, I really do.

Chris [Pine] and Karl [Urban] are both hysterical. I think the work Karl does in this movie is exceptional, a really, really great embodiment of Bones – he’s made it his own, yet pays a clear respect to DeForest Kelley.

Actually everybody made me laugh my face off! J.J. Abrams is hysterical. John Cho is one of the funniest people in the world. And Simon Pegg - you don’t come much funnier than that! This is a cast with real humour and zest – they’re people who really love life.

Setting a New Course

He successfully rebooted “Mission: Impossible” for the movies. Now producer and director J.J. Abrams—the supermind behind Alias, Lost and Fringe—is bringing another iconic ’60s series to the big screen. Only this one comes with tons of intergalactic baggage. “Star Trek,” a hip, sexy, high-octane prequel about the maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise, stars newbie heartthrob Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, and Zachary Quinto (Heroes) and Leonard Nimoy as the younger and older Spock, respectively. It hits theaters May 8, more than 42 years after it debuted on NBC. Will the masses give a hoot? Though Gene Roddenberry’s rose-colored vision of tomorrow earned global devotion and spawned a multibillion-dollar business—including five TV spin-offs and 10 feature films—enthusiasm for Trek has been on the wane for years. Abrams, who grew up preferring George Lucas’ take on outer space, talks to TV Guide Magazine about his new film and why even nonfans should boldly go to the multiplex and give it a try.

What made you—an admitted non-Trekker—think you were the right man for this job?

As a kid I loved Star Wars because it was pure fantasy and disconnected from everything we knew. Star Trek wasn’t my thing. But when the opportunity to make this film came along, my perspective shifted greatly. I came to realize that—unlike Star Wars—the universe Mr. Roddenberry created is all about us. Not only is his vision still relevant, I would argue that it’s more relevant now than ever.

In a new exclusive interview with TrekMovie we talk to the original Spock about returning to the role, fan concerns about canon, Shatner, Fringe, Quinto’s Spock and much more. TrekMovie: There is so much talk about you and Zach and how you guys are like adopted father and son. He says he made the role his own, which is true…Once you mentioned that he did something that blew you away. I am curious now that I have seen the film, what was it that you went ‘oh that is really interesting’?

Nimoy: His relationship with Uhura, he played something that I was quite touched by. So did she for that matter. They both were terribly available for each other. I was really affected by his final moment with the Vulcan council when he rejected their invitation to go to the Vulcan Institute, and the way he said "live long and prosper."
