On the set of Stargate Universe at Bridge Studios in Vancouver last week, a lucky moment allowed us a very quick sneak peek at the call sheet for Stargate Universe Episode #210, the mid-season finale of Season 2, called `Resurgence.'

It showed who was in what particular shot, and gave a brief description of what was being shot. What we glanced was a list of actors and a very brief description of them interacting with special effects...

Louis Ferreira: An Interview with SGU's Funny Man, Colonel Young (No, Really!)

Whilst SGU has its share of lighter moments, it's fair to say that it has a heavy dose of darkness. A crew, stranded on the other side of the universe, no way of getting back, with a growing power struggle on board, threatening the future of the mission (if they had any to begin with!).

At the end of the first part of Season One, Colonel Everett Young finally went beyond the bounds of the measured, intelligent leader that had kept the fractured crew of military and civilians together. His dour, 'let's get on with this' attitude had been the glue for a group of people stuck with seemingly no hope. It was a fascinating moment, to see the true feelings of a man who seemed to define 'bottled up' - despite the obvious references to inter-military affairs.

Clearly there's more than meets the eye when it comes to this character. He's a fascinating creation from Brad Wright and Rob Cooper, but also from the actor who plays him - Canadian veteran actor, Louis Ferreira. What makes him even more fascinating is the man who plays him could not be more different. Jovial, puckish, quick to emote and the owner of a real live fart machine that he lets off during shooting in Vancouver, he is the joker of the SGU cast and crew.

You'd never know it watching him on screen. Talking to him off screen however...



A brief excerpt:

SFP: In what way are you different from Everett Young?

LF: I am as far away as possible from Colonel Everett Young as is possible to get!

He can stay focused and on track. I'm very scattered and ADD and animated. Young is very military, very stoic, ethical - he operates with a clear sense of right and wrong, he can stay calm in the midst of a storm and take responsibility for the people around him. He takes looking after those eighty bodies on board to heart.

There's not a lot of room on board for joy. We're drinking water and eating mush - it's a survival story, which is what drew me to the part. In years to come (knock on wood), when the acceptance part of the story comes into play, it'll be really interesting to see that shift. All of a sudden where people are redefined. The idea of 'colonel' when you're on a ship with eighty people kind of changes meaning - indeed, almost becomes meaningless. That would be the time where the psychological nature of the character breaks down and I could insert more of my self into the part.

The challenge for me for the first season has been the focus of the man - the bigger picture: survival.

I personally love the comedy and the humour of Stargate's past, but I hope that we infuse Universe with the same humanity as the original shows...

SGU's Writer/Producer Joseph Mallozzi: 'More Space Battles, Aliens'!

Joseph Mallozzi has been working on Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and now Stargate Universe for just on a decade.

Having written dozens of episodes, the writer/producer is one of the key voices that sing in concert with the two Stargate stalwarts, Brad Wright and Robert Cooper.

He has written the upcoming Stargate: Extinction, the movie length addition to the Stargate Atlantis story, as well as (among many others) the classic SG1 episodes ‘Moebius’, ‘Lockdown’, ‘Descent’ and ‘Homecoming’. And 'Wormhole X-Treme'. On SGA, his writing credits include ‘Home’, 'Travelers', 'This Mortal Coil' and the final episode, ‘Enemy at the Gate’.

As executive producer, consulting producer and just plain producer, he has had a hand in hundreds of Stargate episodes.

If you wanted to talk to someone (besides Brad and Robert) about all things Stargate, HE is your man.

So we did. Here's what he had to say:


A brief excerpt:

SGU’s new style has been quite confronting for many Stargate fans, and especially for the more impatient Stargate fans. When you are writing SGU do you find the style more constricting or less constricting than say on SG1 or SGA?

It’s a completely different animal. In some ways it’s more restrictive, in others it’s less restrictive. One of the things that always appealed to me in SG1 and Atlantis that I felt we didn’t do enough was delve into the characters. When I was writing SG1 I always liked to include those little scene. Say for example, I forget which one exactly, perhaps ‘Lockdown’ when Teal’c and the rest of the team are discussing Teal’c getting his own apartment and what gift they’ll bring for the housewarming. Little instances that suggest that after all the action is said and done, these characters are friends. It added a depth of humanity to characters who are, in some respects, more heroic than the average hero.

In much the same way, when we went over to Atlantis, I always enjoyed the episodes where we could explore the characters. I remember ‘Broken Ties’ was one episode where we got to explore Ronon’s backstory. Showed that vulnerability that made him the warrior that he was, at the same time juxtaposing the introduction of Woolsey, who up to that point had just been the officious jerk IOA character, and through humour, which Bob Picardo was so good at, be able to humanize the character.

Sheppard, Colonel Sheppard. The coolest Colonel in two galaxies. Or is he just a big dork?

We found out in our chat with him on the set of Stargate:Atlantis.

(Turns out not that much of a dork, to be perfectly honest.)

Obviously with the recent news of SGA having its final full season with Season 5, the glory and the glamour of Atlantis will only return in movie-length form, so our trip to Vancouver now has something of a cherished, bittersweet feeling about it. What was interesting about meeting Flanigan was the way his onscreen persona and his off screen persona seemed to coincide. He's likeable, relaxed, easy going, yet underneath it all there's something a little bit more going on.

There may be just a hint of the guy who know's he's smart, but is also smart enough not to lord it over ever one else (a la David Hewlitt's character, Rodney McKay) but there's also the strong streak of 'well, this is who I am, I'm reasonably happy with it, you can take it or leave it', which among actors is not a common trait. At all.So an interview has more in common with a bus stop chat than some kind of weird hypefest.

Hopefully you'll soon get a feel for the real Colonel Sheppard, Joe Flanigan, and decide for yourself...

...Well, what about say, what he does with Teyla (played by Rachel Luttrell) and his response to her getting pregnant, being rather protective of her during Season 4.

JF: "Well, first of all you have to remember that I don’t write this stuff, I act it! I think that, you know... actually, I’ve never thought about that. I guess if she is pregnant, you want to keep her out of physical harm, but if that’s old-fashioned... wouldn’t it be considered insanely irresponsible, not to?!

I think it actually plays as an ‘impatient’ thing, more than anything. I said I should be really tough to Rachel, more than anything. He might be a little old school, but when it comes to men and women... he’s cool."

Ever since you were imprisoned with Todd (the Stargate team delights in naming the nightmarish Wraith individuals with rather mundane monikers) you guys have had an interesting relationship!

JF: "We pick up with Todd and try to do things together, but... surprisingly when plans go badly... we have, let’s say, trust issues! We just generally have fun with the character. The only thing we have to be really careful of is that we don’t get too familiar. There always has to be a freaky element. There’s always something adversarial going on and at any given moment we can clearly kill each other. So no love lost..."

Stargate: Atlantis Season 4 is out on DVD and Blu-ray September 3 (in Australia).

Of course, by 'spycam' we mean the crappy video recorder function on our digital camera. So the quality's not the best. But for that, there's the essential flavour of 'truth'. Here now is the unvarnished reality of Stargate. And frankly - it's awesome!

Martin Wood Interview - Stargate: Continuum

Martin Wood has been directing Stargate for more than a decade - with forty six Stargate: SG1 episodes behind him, and thirty Stargate: Atlantis episodes under the belt, he was the natural 'go to' guy for the creator and writer of Stargate, Brad Wright, when it came to choosing the director for Stargate's first standalone feature, Continuum.

His career includes working on Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, Earth: Final Conflict, Jeremiah, and the new SCI FI series, Sanctuary, starring Stargate's Amanda Tapping, where he is also producing and writing. We spoke to him about directing Stargate: Continuum - and he had a heck of a time!



TIME FOR REFLECTION

One of the big pluses for the fans, despite the huge action scenes, are the character moments. But it's a difficult balancing act with the action and deliberately slowing the pace.

MW: "Originally in the script, Brad had much bigger scenes written than what you actually see now. Robert Cooper convinced Brad to cut down a lot of that. Knowing what was in there, I think a lot of fans would have enjoyed it, but also, I think a lot of them would have thought it was a bridge too far. What we saw was our a team not being a team, not being the characters that we know. So when Carter goes shopping, someone recognises her and she says no, no I'm not Samantha Carter. It was a bigger beat for her.

I think it was nice to get the taste that we did, but anyway, everything changes so quickly when the Alkesh shows up - we're back to the people that we know. I really liked that. The beats are so well thought out.

When you shoot a TV show, you don't have the opportunity to massage the writing in a way that we did here. A lot of the time you'll get on set and realise 'oh oh' this isn't going to work and you'll tap dance around it or wink at it, or just try to divert the audience's attention. In this case, all the pitfalls are thought out beforehand."

Don S Davis (1942-2008) Has Ascended

The man first introduced to Australian audiences as a crafty Salmon fisherman ("I don't know how he can live with himself!") in an iconic John West commercial and then went on to provide the military-man-with-a-heart in such iconic shows as Twin Peaks, The X-Files and Stargate: SG-1 died Sunday the 29th of a heart attack at his home at Gibsons, in British Columbia. He was 65.

A beloved member of the Stargate SG-1 cast and crew since its inception in 1997, he left the show in 2003 due to poor health, returning for guest appearances. However, he did make an appearance in the latest film, Stargate: Continuum. Fans and friends have always responded well to his generous and warm nature.

He was an accomplished artist and woodworker - his work can be seen at Don S Davis Art.

Christopher Judge is a man who's quick with a laugh, and with a deep resonant voice, it's a booming one at that. Booming. He's not shy of the occasional considered opinion, either.

But for all his success, he is laid back, relaxed and personable, and holds no airs or graces - in fact, the most refreshing and surprising thing about him is his utter candour - as you'll see in Part Two of SCI FI PI's epic interview with the man who is Teal'c.

In this installment, he speaks about (among other things) race relations, Stargate:Continuum, the war in Iraq, Michael Shanks' uncanny impersonations, golf, and why he should have been fired from Stargate SG-1. Something for everyone, really.

STARGATE:CONTINUUM, UNIVERSE & FEATURE FILMS

Comes in handy as an actor. For you though at the beginning, not that much of an issue - although as the show went on, you had to remember more and more lines.

CJ: "When Rick (Richard Dean Anderson) slowed his schedule down in Season 7, when Lou Gossett was on, and Teal'c became an orator, I would look at this stuff - 'this one scene is more than Teal'c talked in three seasons!' (laughs).

It was weird, because that muscle had kind of atrophied, and it took me a while to restimulate it. It was tough for a while."

What was it like 'going back' to Continuum? Did you have to return to a 'bad guy' place?

CJ: "Well the perception of Teal'c before SG-1 entered the scene was that he was a bad guy, but he had been talking to Bra'tac for years (about rebelling against the evil Goa'uld), but he had to keep the facade of the status quo in order to have these back room machinations going on - so in Continuum it was much the same thing - only Teal'c aligned himself with Ba'al, because Ba'al offered him a chance to free his people. So it's still the same endgame, just a different route to get there."

INTERVIEWS - Teal'c Cuts Loose : The Ultimate Christopher Judge Interview

Christopher Judge is instantly recognisable to Sci Fi fans. For ten years, his role as Teal'c on Stargate SG-1 has resonated with audiences the world over. But Christopher Judge the actor is no stoic Jaffa warrior - in fact, the reality could not be further from the truth.

Larger than life, quick to laugh and quick witted, he brings an air of enthusiasm to everything he does.

On a recent trip to the Southern Hemisphere as a guest of First Contact Conventions, he stopped for a moment in between a whirlwind visit to Sydney and Wellington to have a heart-to-heart chat with SCI FI PI.

He talked about pretty much everything you could imagine, from his darkest fears, the highs (and lows) of Stargate, his experience as a writer, the two new Stargate films, his upcoming new series, Rage of Angels, all the way to golf with the kids.

Surprisingly candid and approachable, this is the first part of an epic two part (possibly even three part) interview with 'the world's most recognisable black man', Christopher Judge.

FROM ACTOR TO WRITER

But now of course, you have the experience of being a Sci Fi writer - where they expect you to know stuff that you're making up as you go along! Fans will know that you worked on several episodes as a writer, specifically with Jaffa storylines, but this has given you many opportunities, including your new show, Rage of Angels.

CJ: "I was kind of a cut-up the first five years, and I think I was having too good a time. Brad Wright and I were always very good friends and he knew that I always wanted to go more the writer/producer route and he said to me 'why don't you get serious and write something?' anything? well, come in with a couple of pitches and we'll see what you've got.

We'd always had pitches for shows about Amazons, but they always seemed a bit like Wonder Woman type of thing, so I came up with concept of these women under one particular God who so wanted warriors that he would kill off the children until he got a boy - which lead to one of their princesses spiriting their children away and so on.

The way a normal story is written - you pitch an idea, if the writers like it, then they all sit in a room and they break the story. Break the beats, break the acts, break everything. And then you basically write the dialogue. I asked Brad - 'would you mind if I didn't do that, because I would really like a real assessment if I have a future in this or not'. And he said 'sure'.

So I actually turned it in early. Then we went on summer hiatus and I didn't hear anything from Brad or Martin Wood, who I'd also given a copy to, and also to John Smith. And nothing. So I'm just sitting there thinking 'guess I'm an actor'...

Then on the Saturday before we were to go back to work, there were three messages on my phone. And they swear they didn't talk. Brad, Martin and John each saying how much they enjoyed it, blah blah blah. Structurally, Brad definitely fixed that, but for the most part, we pretty much shot what I wrote, which I learned is not the way it always happens. As a writer, especially as a TV writer or film writer, you can't be 'married' to the work or take it personally. The whole thing, I really owe to Brad Wright. Even Rage of Angels.

We were at Martin Wood's wedding, we had gone outside for a smoke - well I was smoking - and he said, 'if this show ever ends, what are you gonna do?'. And I said 'I'd really like to star in an hour drama, not a sitcom, and have it be viable'. And he said 'you know you're going to have to write it yourself - no network is out looking for that'.

And I said 'yeah, I kinda figured that'. So the week of the 200th episode, that's when we learned we were cancelled. Four days later I had written Rage of Angels."

Walking around Bright Lights Studios in Vancouver you quickly understand the massive scale of production that a major Sci Fi TV show requires to get to air. 9/10ths of the entire studio are currently turned over to Stargate: Atlantis, and with a combination of permanent and 'swing' sets on several massive sound stages, the sounds of activity are constant. One day an 'indoor' forest will exist next to a village, the next day a spaceship will spring into existence.

In another building, the costume department is entirely self-contained, 95% of all the costumes on the show are built from scratch - including 'building up' of alien leather. There are so many costumes made for the show that only the ones used for the current season can be kept on site.

One interesting surprise - the boots used on Atlantis are for the most part, Blundstones - they often have a special covering on their soles designed to reduce wear and tear on the sets and to reduce noise.

In a small red brick building past 'The Village' stage, the visual effects department gets about two months from go to woah on each episode - (whilst working on about 12 episodes at a time) to produce the 40-50 vfx shots required for each 44 minutes of Stargate: Atlantis.

After our first day on The Daedalus set of Stargate:Atlantis to chat with the stars of the show and to talk to creator Brad Wright and star Ben Browder about Stargate:Continuum, it comes as a bit of a shock that the next day was even better - walking into the gate room of Atlantis Base was something of a Sci Fi fan's dream - but it's not just the context of being there - it's the sheer physicality. It's a massive set.

More info to come on who we spoke to and just what went down - and what's to come in the Stargate universe (ahem) soon. In the meantime, here's some more up close and touchable photos from the iconic set.

From what the cast and crew have said, (and what we saw at the one and only screening of Contniuum) It looks like the wait for the release Season 4 Atlantis and Continuum in a few months will be worth it.

As will Season 5!

One of the coolest things about getting to go on set of a major Sci Fi show is sharing it with SCI FI fans.

With our visit on board The Daedalus, we could get right up close and see the kind of detail that you never get to see on air, the kind of 'behind the scenes' details that really define the show, but is never really revealed through transmission.

The first thing you notice about The Daedalus set of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis is that as a space ship, it hasn't been created to look that futuristic - obviously, it's made to look like it was built in the present time, and shares a great deal of the surprisingly analogue technology that you'd find in any state of the art aircraft carrier. The buttons are switches, they aren't just glass panels, there's plumbing fittings and there's more than just a passing nod to the warning labels and signs that you see in the modern US. Navy.

Obviously, however, there are some differences. As you'd expect with Asgard technology!

Things like view screens are in fact that - modern LCDs that work, not just pictograms. The perspex 'map/star chart' boards are exactly as they are on film.

This marks the 200th post since SCI FI PI hit the blogosphere, and what better way to celebrate than to announce that the next few days of manic ramblings, recommendations and reviews will be coming from downtown Vancouver, just minutes away from the set of Stargate:Atlantis.

Not only will SCI FI PI be gathering crucial info on Stargate: Continuum (at the first ever screening) but we'll also be talking to the stars of Stargate, both SG-1 and Atlantis, as well as the 'God' of Stargate himself, Brad Wright. We'll be getting the scoop on Atlantis Season 4, and possibly even Season 5!

Now that Stargate SG:1 has gone on for a decade, and Atlantis for five seasons, and a new show, Stargate:Universe announced, we're visiting Stargate at a time where the unthinkable has happened - a genuine rival for Star Trek in the 'all time' Sci Fi stakes. We'll try to bring back as much info as possible and share it round in as many forms as possible in the coming days, weeks and months.

For Gaters, a real treat - we'll be trying to add photos from the actual sets - not just the usual slick good-looking 'DVD making of' press release kind of photos, but touch it, feel it, smell it, tourist-style up close and personal happy snaps of puddle jumpers, the Daedalus, and of if we can, Atlantis Base.

Matt Reeves Interview - The Director Of Cloverfield Speaks!

Even before its release, Cloverfield was a pop culture phenomenon - now it goes down as one of those rare movies where the term 'instant classic' applies, beyond first weekend hype.

But the film isn't all that it appears, there's a little bit more it than some kids and a handycam and the Hollywood juggernaut that is JJ Abrams.

We managed to track down the film's million-words-per-minute director, Matt Reeves, in his LA office, just a day after he arrived back from the film's final theatrical release - in the home of Godzilla, Japan. He gave us the low down on the film's creation, production, and of course, whether there will be a sequel or not.

JJ ABRAMS LENDS A HAND!

Some people will look at the film and it's style and say 'wow, young director breaks into Hollywood' but that's not entirely the case, is it? You've been friends with JJ Abrams for a long time, you co-created Felicity together. But you did direct this film. How do you feel when it's got JJ Abrams all over the marketing? Do you feel like you're part of a team, or do you feel like you're being overshadowed by some egomaniac?

(laughs) Well JJ is my friend, literally since childhood, and he actually produced my first film, The Pallbearer, and we worked on Felicity together and I love working with him.

In the case of the movie we were making this totally under the radar with unknowns, and the one thing that JJ has really done in the last 8 years is to create this brand around him self, this sense of mystery with Lost and Alias and to some degree MI:3, there's a kind of style that especially the fan boys have kind of got into, that having him - but basically, no franchise, no actors and me not being known at all, then there was no question that the selling point was going to be JJ.

That was so much what I expected as the entry point, but I hoped that as people see the film they realise that I directed the film, and that one of the things now after it's out that people can go 'oh, JJ didn't direct it, that's right', but you know, the whole thing was such a crazy experience - JJ's name is part of what we had to market. Frankly, in that combination, the thing to sell to get people intrigued, was JJ.
