GateWorld Podcast: The Science of SGU

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

Is it conceivable to power a ship with the stars themselves? Are alien lifeforms like the dust devil and the blue “Space” aliens really evolutionary possibilities? And how does faster-than-light travel work? This week on the GateWorld Podcast we examine the science of Stargate Universe, with a special guest expert on hand to discuss how the television series lines up with real-world science. Astronomer and science fiction writer Diane Turnshek joins David and Darren to talk about all this, and more.

It’s the first of our final three shows of the summer! Stay tuned next week for our discussion of Ancient history, followed by the 100th Episode Bash on August 4.

by Darren Sumner

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

When is a Stargate like an airliner crash? How does Destiny mirror the island? In this week’s podcast we’re putting the Stargate franchise (and particularly SGU) up against one of our other favorite science fiction series, LOST! GateWorld’s Darren and David talk about SGU and character-centric storytelling, flashbacks, and inner conflict and external threats.

We’ll also give our take on the (somewhat controversial) LOST series finale, and why we found it so satisfying. (If you haven’t seen the end of LOST yet, do beware of spoilers.)

(For our previous “Versus” shows, check out Stargate vs. Star Trek and Stargate vs. Battlestar Galactica!)

We’re taking the week off next week as David heads to Vancouver for Gatecon! We’ll see you in two weeks for the first of our final three shows of the summer.

Stargate Universe - GateWorld: Brian J. Smith Interview

At GateWorld:

(Please follow the link for the complete GateWorld interview.)

Leader In Training

Photobucket

by Chad Colvin
Thursday - July 1, 2010

Now well into his second year of filming, Stargate Universe actor Brian J. Smith has brought a definite sense of passion and intensity to his character, Lt. Matthew Scott. He’s a leader in training, a young officer who is called upon to protect the crew of the Destiny and to serve as an example of the best that the ship’s military contingent can be — even (and especially) in the midst of crisis.

GateWorld recently chatted with Brian at the official Stargate convention in Vancouver, hosted by Creation Entertainment. We discussed such topics as fandom and Internet anonymity, Matt’s relationship with Chloe, his character’s potential for growth, and the climactic SGU season ender.

Season Two of SGU is now filming and will premiere this October! Season 1.0 is available on DVD and Blu-ray, and Season 1.5 arrives in July.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

GW: His loyalties are never divided; he’s clearly on Young’s side. But he’s still willing to give that certain amount of whatever to Rush in order — because he feels like Rush is the key to getting home.
BS: Scott is an emotional leader. I think his leadership style is much more emotional, so he’s much more bound to be loyal. He may also be more impulsive in a way, tend to get a little more hot-headed.
Scott comes upon the element his crew needs to survive.

But he’s learning. And even seeing where they’re taking him in the second season is really, really exciting, because there’s some qualities that are coming out in him that I really, really like and I’m glad to see explored. Because right now, him and Greer — they get the dirty work done for Young. Young makes the decision and Scott and Greer [execute it], along with the rest of the military personnel. It’s like Young is the director and Greer and Scott are the assistant directors. We’re the ones that go out and try to make the vision a reality.

So it’s going to be interesting to see if Scott gets to a place where decisions that he makes start to affect storylines, and if he’s able to change the course of an episode or how things turn out. That’ll be exciting to see...

The GateWorld Podcast goes back to the past in this week’s show, taking a look at the Stargate SG-1 Season Four episode “2010″ and the way the first decade of the century had played out in that alternate timeline. But wait! Now it is 2010 … so how does the past decade really compare, within the Stargate universe?

We’ll talk about the friends we lost, public knowledge of the Stargate, the stability and technology provided by the Aschen, President Kinsey, and more. And we’ll ask listeners if you think we are better off now than we were before SG-1 changed the timeline.

GateWorld Podcast: SGU Season One Recap

Photobucket

Wednesday - June 23, 2010

by Darren Sumner

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

The freshman season of Stargate Universe is complete! In this week’s podcast, GateWorld’s Darren and David will look at the first year of SGU as a whole and discuss what we thought worked. How did the second half of the season compare to the first half? Character drama, alien threats, separation from home, communication stones, and more — it’s all on the table as we dissect Season One and decide if it lived up to our own expectations.

But first, we’ll also be talking about the news of writer-producer Robert C. Cooper’s departure from Stargate.

If you are a fan of Doctor Who, stick around after the show for a bonus discussion! Darren has picked three episodes for David to watch, and this week David will give us his newbie take on the show and whether he’s been convinced to keep watching.

Robert C. Cooper departing Stargate

by Darren Sumner

Robert C. Cooper, one of the Stargate franchise’s most veteran writer/producers, is moving on. Cooper will leave Stargate next month, fellow SGU executive producer Joseph Mallozzi announced on his blog.
“I’m not leaving completely, actually — just stepping back to more of a consulting role for the end of this season,” Cooper told GateWorld. “However, my credit will remain Executive Producer. We’ve already developed most of Season Two and I feel very confident leaving the show in good hands.”

Cooper’s final contribution to the stalwart franchise will be a stage panel appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, promoting the second season of Stargate Universe (now in production). He also tells GateWorld that he’ll be writing one more episode for late Season Two...

...Stay tuned to GateWorld for more exclusive comments straight from Rob Cooper on his decision to step back from the show, and just what his responsibilities will be for the remainder of Season Two’s production.

We’d like to thank Rob Cooper for his part in more than a decade of great television, and wish him Godspeed in his next endeavor!

Stargate Universe - GateWorld: David Blue Audio Interview

Mister Kino

David Blue Audio Interview

by Chad Colvin

Photobucket

With the first season of Stargate Universe drawing to a close, who better to tell us everything is going to be alright (Season Two is just around the corner!) than David Blue? The actor plays Eli Wallace on the series, and has quickly become a fan favorite both on screen and behind the scenes.

GateWorld sat down with David at Creation Entertainment’s official Stargate convention in Vancouver. We covered everything from his relationships with other cast members, to Eli’s character development so far (and still to come), to the fan reception of the show.

GateWorld’s interview with David Blue runs 15 minutes, and is available in audio. It’s also transcribed [at the link above]!

A brief excerpt:

GateWorld: What aspects of Eli’s life and personality would you like to see explored?
David Blue: We’re on a good way to doing all that. I don’t want it to happen too fast, because I agree with Brad [Wright] and Rob [Cooper] that he shouldn’t grow into things too quickly. I’d love to see him find a way to contribute more, not just be the documentarian. Not just be the guy who’s like, “Ooh, it’s a Stargate!” and start contributing what he knows. Because he is very good at math, he has had training in astrophysics and physics and all these other things. So I’d love to see him start putting it to use.

But the truth is that I know it’s coming down the line. I’ve seen all of the relationships that I’ve been curious about [developing]. All the stuff about his past, when they can they touch on it. It’s the long haul for a character like this. You kind of have to be patient.

“Subversion” kicks Stargate Universe into high gear, paying off some early character and plot set-up from last fall and setting up the two-part season finale. In this week’s podcast we’ll discuss everything from Colonel Telford and the major developments with his character, to Rush and Young and the lengths to which they are willing to go, to the Lucian Alliance and their secret plans. Stargate Universe - GateWorld: Elyse Levesque Audio Interview

At GateWorld:

DAUGHTER OF DESTINY

by Chad Colvin

Photobucket

It’s a crazy time for some of the stars of Stargate Universe. Many of them are just beginning to meet fans of the new series face to face and realize the immensity and dedication there is to the entire Stargate franchise. One for whom this is especially true is the actress playing SGU’s Chloe Armstrong, Elyse Levesque.

GateWorld caught up with Elyse at Creation Entertainment’s annual Vancouver Stargate convention last month, and we were blown away by both her enthusiasm and her energy for the series. In our discussion Elyse talks about her introduction to the industry, how she and Chloe are both similar and different, the Eli-Matt-Chloe triangle, and much much more.

GateWorld’s interview with Elyse Levesque runs over 12 minutes, and is available in audio. It’s also transcribed [at the link above]!

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

GateWorld: Are there any parts of your personality that you bring to her?
EL: Gosh! I think … I think there’s just some stuff that I relate to. The upbringing. An only child. Very close to her parents and her family. I’m super, super close to my parents. I’m a total daddy’s girl. She’s got a much more difficult relationship with her mother than I do with mine. I’m very close to my mom. And I guess, in a way, a sheltered upbringing. I can relate to that. A small city. A lot of love. A lot of protection.

In ways I differ — I think I’m a lot goofier then she is. A lot weirder, probably. You could say that about me. I think she takes herself a little more seriously than I do. But I used to! I used to take myself a lot more seriously. And then I said, “You know what? I’m weird! Go with it!” So I guess the essence of me is similar to her, but maybe it’s a dialed-down me.

GateWorld Podcast: ‘Human’

by Darren Sumner

Photobucket

Visit the GateWorld Podcast page for more about the show!

This week on the show David and Darren are, of course, talking about last Friday’s new episode of Stargate Universe! “Human” gave us a compelling look at Dr. Nicholas Rush’s past and his inner psyche. It also showed us just how far he’s willing to go to crack Destiny’s code. We’ll talk about Rush’s response to reliving his wife’s illness, the Lucian Alliance, and a return from Dr. Daniel Jackson (guest star Michael Shanks). We’ll also talk about the civilization discovered by the team in the B-story, and speculate a little on how the big cliffhanger might be resolved. And we’ll find out what podcast listeners thought of the episode!

But first: GateWorld’s own Chad Colvin pays us a visit to debrief on the Vancouver Stargate Convention, hosted by Creation Entertainment. While Darren and David had to stay home this year, Chad was hoppin’ busy covering all the stage panels, hosting GateWorld’s annual dinner (thanks to Propworx for donating the one-of-a-kind give-aways, plus Sci-Fried Band for more goodies), and interviewing nearly a dozen actors from SG-1, SGA, and SGU. Tune in to hear about Chad’s week, and watch the site for those interviews plus more from the Vancouver event.
