Stargate Universe - Pink Paper Magazine: Ming-Na Interview

At Pink Paper Magazine:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

"My husband was super thrilled when he found out I was playing a lesbian"

Ming Na was Deb in ER and the voice of Mulan. Yes, Disney's Mulan. Now she's playing gay as Camille Wray in Stargate Universe.

Darren Scott
Pink Paper Magazine
12 January 2010

A brief excerpt:

Working on a show like Stargate Universe, how does it differ from something like ER?
Ming-Na: "Well I’ve been so impressed with Sci-Fi and MGM, with a station that’s a little bit smaller there is a great deal more support and a comfort that you get from the executives of MGM and Sci-Fi. They’re friendly, completely approachable, super-supportive. I mean, right now, MGM will be showing a 90 second trailer in movie theatres which is fantastic. It’s amazing support. It feels like a big family. That’s one aspect of it. Another aspect of it is that the whole Stargate franchise has been around for 15 years. They have Brad Wright and Robert Cooper and the crew and the writers have all been involved for many, many years. It’s just such a well-oiled machine and they’ve embraced all of us newbies with open arms and there’s a lot of comfort so I’m really thrilled about that. Most of the time you’re there biting your nails thinking ‘oh God, I hope they like it and god, I hope they enjoy it. I hope the numbers come in’, and so on. Of course, we want big numbers and I think at the same time they’re excited to see the show air in general."

Stargate - Home Media Magazine: MGM has Stargate Surprises Planned for MGM's 85th Anniversary

At Home Media Magazine:

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

Six Questions: Eric Doctorow

By Thomas K. Arnold | Posted: 15 May 2009

Eric Doctorow is the longest-serving studio chief in Hollywood's home entertainment sector. He became president of worldwide video for Paramount Pictures in 1994, and has been keeping close tabs on the business ever since, most recently as GM of MGM Worldwide for the past three years.

In the midst of MGM's 85th anniversary, Home Media Magazine sat down with Doctorow to gain his perspective on several big issues, opportunities and challenges that face us today. Fifteen years after he first became a worldwide home entertainment president, Doctorow possesses a vast body of institutional knowledge — and continues to be one of the home entertainment sector's top movers and shakers.

HM: MGM celebrates its 85th birthday this year, a year after Warner Bros. What special events or releases do you have in store to capitalize on this milestone?
Doctorow: For the coming year, we have a number of cool releases planned: A 40th anniversary edition of Hair, an all-new special collector's edition of Spinal Tap on Blu-ray Disc, and a 30th anniversary edition of Mad Max. We have a couple of "Stargate" surprises planned. The entire "Rocky" collection will also street on Blu-ray in time for the holidays. And, finally, we have some neat gift sets being planned for later in the year.

~~**~~**

NOTE: Stargate: Universe premieres on the SciFi Channel (US) (or Syfy) in the Fall of 2009 (most probably in October). The Stargate Atlantis Region 1 Season 5 DVD Box set is scheduled to be released June 30 '09; Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods - Final Cut DVD has a release date of July 21 '09; and the Stargate Atlantis: The Fans Choice DVD has a release date of August 4 '09. The third Stargate SG-1 made-for-DVD movie and the Stargate Atlantis made-for-DVD movie are both currently in pre-production stages.

MGM HD - Win a United Artists 90th Anniversary 30 movie gift set

At MGM HD:

(Click on the white UA 90th Anniversary Sweepstakes button on the right hand side of the page.)

One winner will be chosen for each day of February.

For over 90 years MGM's sister studio United Artists has become synonymous with great films. MGM HD wants you to be a part of the UA legacy! Enter now for your chance to win a United Artists 30-film Deluxe DVD Gift Set!

United Artists was established in 1919, founded by four of the biggest stars in early Hollywood: Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and D.W. Griffith. The studio became best known as "the company built by the stars" because of its famous founders and the set of independent filmmakers that distributed their films through UA. In an era defined by the classic Hollywood studio system, where most studios owned their own production, distribution, and exhibition operations, UA was unique in that it gave filmmakers and actors creative freedom and control over their own pictures, while also giving them a share of the film's profits.

The complete rules:

A few excerpts:

* The United Artists 90th Anniversary Sweepstakes begins at 12:00:01 a.m. Eastern Time ("ET") on February 1, 2009 and ends at 11:59:59 p.m. ET on February 28, 2009.

* The Promotion is open to any individual who is, as of the beginning of the Promotion Period, (a) a legal resident of one (1) of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia and (b) the age of majority or older in the State where such individual permanently resides.

* Limit one (1) entry per person and per e-mail address during the Promotion Period.

* PRIZES: Twenty-eight (28) Winners will each receive, subject to verification, one (1) United Artists 30-Film Deluxe Gift Set containing thirty (30) pre-selected DVD titles (chosen by Sponsor in its sole discretion) from the MGM/UA film library (each a "Prize" and collectively the "Prizes").

Stargate SG1 / Atlantis - GateWorld: Author Sally Malcolm Audio Interview

At GateWorld:

STORIED SUCCESS

GateWorld talks with Sally Malcolm

Since June of 2004, U.K.-based Fandemonium has regularly published full length, original Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis novels, including Elizabeth Christensen's 2008 Scribe Award winner, "Stargate Atlantis: Casualties of War."

Sally Malcolm is the joint-owner of Fandemonium, along with her husband, Tom, and she is the publisher's Chief Editor. She recently joined GateWorld for a discussion of Fandemonium's history, their process in working with MGM, and their future goals as a company. Sally also talks about writing her own Stargate novels and watching Michael Shanks perform "Gift of the Gods," the script Sally wrote for audio book publisher Big Finish.

You can learn more about the many novels Fandemonium has published in GateWorld's Books section, and visit their Web site at StargateNovels.com!

GateWorld's interview with Sally Malcolm runs about 25 minutes. Listen online at your leisure, download it to your MP3 player, or subscribe now to the iTunes podcast! The full interview is also transcribed [at the link above].

A brief excerpt:

GW: You mentioned that you work closely with MGM. Can you talk to us about what the normal process is like in submitting a book to MGM, and then how you work with them as the book is being written and is ready to be published?
SM: Sure. The first thing we get [from the author] is a one-page outline that comes to me, and if I like it and think we haven't got a book too similar, I'll ask for a 4,000-word outline of the story, which goes to MGM. They look at that and make sure it ties in with the feel of the show, and hopefully there's not too much of an overlap with upcoming episodes. Although, we have recently had a problem with a book that is going to be published soon by James Swallow -- and it's an excellent book, and we are publishing it and it's a wonderful book -- I'm not going to say what, but there's an element to it which has recently appeared in an episode.

September 21, 2008: The Wrap Party!

Well, MGM pulled out all the stops for the big 100th Episode/Series Wrap Party. The Sheraton Wall Centre was the scene of the festivities that included black jack, roulette, gaming stations, and lotsa food. A huge thanks to Jeff, Theo, and Ramona for organizing the event...

Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright

...Thank you for five wonderful years.

And thanks to you, the fans, for five wonderful years of support.

Well, the party may have ended at the Sheraton but festivities continue here on this blog. I’m collecting questions for Stargate: Atlantis (and much, much more) composer Joel Goldsmith. If you have questions for the maestro, let’s see ’em.

Finish up The Black Company. If you have questions for author Glen Cook, let’s see them as well. I’ll be weighing in with my thoughts on the book in tomorrow’s entry.

Stargate Universe: NBCU: SciFi and MGM Reach for the Stars with Stargate Universe

From NBCU:

SCI FI AND MGM REACH FOR THE STARS WITH 'STARGATE UNIVERSE'

Published: August 22, 2008

New Stargate Series Targeted For Summer 2009 Premiere

New York, NY – August 22, 2008 – SCI FI Channel and MGM Television Entertainment have reached an agreement to extend MGM's Stargate brand with a new series for the Channel. Production on the first season of Stargate Universe, a weekly series based on the popular Stargate franchise, will begin in early 2009, with the show targeted to premiere that Summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and who both currently serve as executive producers on Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

"SCI FI has enjoyed tremendous success with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and we're proud to be the home of the new Stargate Universe," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. "Universe will continue the Stargate legacy of vibrant storylines and compelling adventures, but will re-invent the format in a whole new way."

"The Stargate franchise enjoys a loyal and substantial fan base that welcomes each new installment with fevered enthusiasm," said Charles Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President and Corporate Development for MGM. "We are delighted to be working again with Brad and Robert and look forward to seeing new adventures with the launch of Stargate Universe on SCI FI Channel next year. Stargate Universe will continue the longstanding relationship between MGM's stellar science fiction franchise and cable's premiere destination for all passionate science fiction fans."

Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies said, "Stargate Universe is a natural progression for the Stargate brand and for our network. Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis have been key drivers for SCI FI and we are looking forward to seeing where this next chapter leads, as each new installment of the Stargate franchise further engages the SCI FI audience."

Wright and Cooper said: "In 'Universe,' we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humour, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping off point for telling stories."
After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI. Following its premiere, Universe will assume a regular hourly slot in Summer 2009.

Universe will be distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution.
