Cult Alert: Battlestar finale

Before screening tonight’s tremendously satisfying, super-sized, overstuffed Battlestar Galactica finale (9/8c, Sci Fi) to a select audience earlier this week, executive producer/writer Ron Moore made everyone in the theater raise their hand and take a solemn (well, kinda) pledge not to reveal anything that happens in these last eventful two hours.

No problem. I’d sooner be blown out of an airlock than spoil how things end for these tormented space warriors and the marvelous old dying old ship that’s carrying them to their destiny. Suffice it to say that the finale is a fabulous payoff in every way imaginable. And then some. And then some more. (Therein lies the problem.) In my row alone, there were outbreaks of gasps, laughs, cheers and tears before it was all over.

The best news: The battle scenes are genuinely spectacular, as Galactica’s volunteer crew of humans and Cylons takes on one last mission against Cavil’s rebel Cylon forces: the rescue of human/Cylon hybrid child Hera. The action is thrilling, and the most pivotal twist in the ultimate showdown is as surprising as it is cathartic ...

'Battlestar Galactica's' Final Cylon Is Back This Friday... & She's Talking.

When it was revealed last month that Ellen Tigh was Battlestar Galactica's final Cylon, the fan reaction was decidedly mixed. Understandably so. The character had been dead since season three and some viewers felt the last Cylon should be a more prominent player. However, now that we know Ellen is the one, it puts a few of her past actions into perspective, and yet raises several questions at the same time. KTV reporter Marisa Roffman chatted with Kate Vernon -- who comes back to the show tomorrow night -- to get her take on her character's big reveal, how long she's known about it, how long Ellen's known and why, at one point, she thought she'd burned her bridge with Battlestar...

A brief excerpt:

Fans first suspected Ellen might be a Cylon when Tigh started seeing visions of her while interrogating Six. Was that foreshadowing or was he just feeling guilty about his role in Ellen’s death?

I think it’s both. Saul and Ellen have an ancient relationship now. Now that everyone knows who we are, it’s clear that these two people have been connected and involved and married for thousands of years. And they’re very much a part of each other. So for him to mix with another female that is blonde and blue eyed and tall, it was like an overlay of his tremendous guilt for poisoning the woman that he truly loves and who he truly wants. I think it was part of his grieving process. When someone you love dies, you try and let them go and move on with your life, but you can’t help but have this weird holographic memory of your past lover.

Star Trek veteran and Battlestar Galactica creator Ronald D. Moore discusses religion, revelations and resolutions in the series' final season, which begins January 16.

A brief excerpt:

Q: The build-up to the final Cylon has been unprecedented. How is the revelation not going to be a letdown?

A: It will never be as powerful as the build-up. I resigned myself to that a long time ago. The "Who Shot JR" of it all is an instructive lesson: No matter who it is, it's still going to be a bit of a letdown. But I decided that precisely because of that, it wasn't going to be in the final episode. I didn't want that to become the entire series. I'm sure there will be a variety of reactions. Some people will love it, some people will hate it. But I think when you see how the revelation fits into the overall mythology of the show, when all the questions are answered by the end, then it'll make sense and you'll think, "Oh, well it kind of had to be that person."

A complete primer on the smartest sci-fi TV show ... maybe ever.

April 2, 2008 | When the "Battlestar Galactica" miniseries premiered in 2003, viewers could be forgiven for having low expectations. At the time, the Sci Fi Channel, on which "Battlestar" aired, was a niche cable channel known mostly for "Stargate SG-1" and "Star Trek" reruns, and the show's source material, a cheesy '70s flop for ABC, wasn't exactly "The Sopranos." The series' premise, furthermore, involved enough clichéd science fiction elements -- an evil race of robots, a hotshot fighter pilot and characters with names like "Apollo" -- to make the show's fans wince when explaining it to their friends.

Three seasons later, "Battlestar Galactica" has become one of TV's smartest series. It has won a Peabody Award, made the Sci Fi Channel a semireputable cable outlet and revolutionized science fiction on television. It has proved that the genre, when liberated from the body-hugging Lycra jumpsuits and staid dialogue that have plagued most post-"Trek" science fiction series, can be a vehicle for both scathing political commentary and genuine pathos. The network recently greenlighted a prequel spinoff series called "Caprica," and on Friday, April 4, "Battlestar" returns to Sci Fi after a yearlong hiatus for its fourth and final season.
