Don S. Davis 1942-2008
Don Davis, the man behind the iconic General Hammond, sadly passed away on June 30th, leaving a body of work to which few actors could lay claim. As well known for his work as Major Garland Briggs in Twin Peaks, and as Scully’s father in The X Files as for his work on Stargate SG-1, Don managed to squeeze a lifetime of roles into his 20-year acting career. In this issue, we commemorate Don’s passing with commentary from those who knew him best, and from the man himself.
Jack O'Neill's guide to space exploration
This pearl of wisdom could only come from Major General Jack O’Neill – when it comes to exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new life and new civilizations, he’s something of an expert. Studio Head Dan Elggren, Creative Director Chris Klug and Art Director Howard Lyon talked to the X-Play team about production of the game and the upcoming beta.
Elggren took a character through several environments of a pre-alpha build and played through an assault on a drug lord stronghold on the alien planet Lucia.

The winner of the Unlock the Gate competition visited the Stargate Worlds development studios at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment today!
Dennis Allen of Northern California spent the entire day rubbing elbows with the men and women developing the upcoming MMORPG. He received SGW gear, an exclusive look at the latest artwork, saw worlds being built, had lunch with the department heads, and even got to play in a starting zone of the game!
SCI FI Channel [NOTE: it was a MGM Stargate contest] ran the Unlock the Gate contest during the second half of Stargate Atlantis Season Four, from January 4 to March 7, 2008. Dennis beat over 130,000 entrants to win the visit the studio!

But they're not the guys living in mom's basement, they're the creative team at Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, and in less than a year, the science fiction universe they're building in an office park in east Mesa will come to life for an eager worldwide audience.

But the fourth quarter of 2008 will mark the first time fans can control those characters and live the story through a massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
All that familiarity and the expectations that come with the franchise put the game's designers at Cheyenne Mountain in a unique position, and not just because the 100 people who work there are on something of a professional island in Arizona.

That includes a contest, running through March, which allows intrepid fans the chance to have their own character integrated in the game, in addition to breathing life into the stale exterior shots seen on TV.

Doug Lundberg runs one at http://www.keenandgrave.com and said that Stargate fans are buzzing about the game, but other gamers are hedging their bets on the game's success.
"For Stargate, I think it's going to be a niche market, but there is a market out there for sci-fi games," Lundberg said. "Right now, most of the market is for fantasy games, like World of Warcraft or Warhammer, so people are desperate to go and play a sci-fi game. So Stargate definitely has potential."

Stargate Worlds, the Massively Multiplayer game, is now in full-on production in Phoenix, Arizona, and GateWorld continues to bring you insider looks and interviews with the team bringing the MMO to life! Recently Carl Coss, the head of the animation department, recently took time with GateWorld editor/Stargate Worlds community manager David Read to discuss where his team is currently in the project.
Carl tells us about the excitement of being involved in the decision-making of the project, leading a team of animators, and trying to find time to animate himself. From animating a Goa'uld symbiote to a rudimentary Asgard walk, it's all a day at the office at Stargate Worlds!
