On the island continent of Mirabilis, in a faraway time, the most coveted element is bloodsteel, a sorcery grade ore that imparts potent magical abilities to anyone who is able to draw it from the earth. The desire for untold wealth and power has drawn much of Mirabilis' vast and disparate populace-humans, elves, dwarves and goblins-to the old port mining town of Black Roc Keep. It has also enticed the evil Dragon Eye (Mark Gibbon) and his ruthless cadre of Brood soldiers, who'll stop at nothing to possess the ore for the purpose of total world domination. Enlisted to save Mirabilis from this lethal insurgency is the venerable sorcerer elf Tesselink (Christopher Lloyd), who has been given a vital directive by the Oracle of the land. He must find the legendary magical Crucible, which is the source of bloodsteel.



To execute this perilous quest, Tesselink gathers an unlikely band of freedom fighters: two humans, Serragoth (David James Elliott), the sworn enemy of the Brood, and Adric (Christopher Jacot), a charming con-man; the imposing goblin Ber-Lak (Dru Viergever); and lastly, the beautiful and fearless warrior elf, Perfidia (Natassia Malthe). Together, this motley, but supremely talented, Knights of Bloodsteel, embark on their dangerous mission. They must fight against the Brood - the dreaded assassins and soldiers of Dragon Eye who are led by the deadly goblin Azenhawke (Gardiner Millar) and his ruthless lieutenant Swope (Peter Bryant). And if that is not enough, Dragon Eye has also unleashed lethal dragons and other horrendous creatures to find the source of the bloodsteel and to obliterate anything that stands in his way.



The future of Mirabilis is in the hands of four brave knights and their courage is tested in ways they could never have imagined.

Knights of Bloodsteel is produced by Reunion Pictures (Lisa Richardson, Matthew O'Connor, Tom Rowe) with RHI Entertainment, (Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr.) distributing the project internationally. Emmy-nominated Sam Egan (Sanctuary, Jeremiah, The Outer Limits) wrote the script.

Tricon sells more Sanctuary

MIPCOM NEWS: Canada's Tricon Films and Television has found more customers for its sci-fi series Sanctuary (13x60'), selling the series into Central Europe and Asia.

Entertainment channel AXN has snapped up the show for Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

Meanwhile, Sci Fi Channel Asia has taken the series to air on its channels in more than 28 countries ...

2.7 Million Tune In For Series Premiere

New York, NY – October 6, 2008 –SCI FI's groundbreaking new original series Sanctuary, which premiered on Friday, October 3 (9-11 pm), was the #1 primetime cable entertainment program among Adults 25-54 and the #4 among Adults 18-49. Sanctuary delivered more than 2.7 million total viewers (P2+), 1.08 million Adults 18-49, and 1.4 million Adults 25-54. With its 2.2 HH rating, Sanctuary is the highest rated original series premiere since Eureka made Channel history in July 2006.

Sanctuary helped to make SCI FI the #1 cable network airing entertainment programming in 8-11 pm primetime with Adults 25-54, and among adults 18-49 the Channel was ranked #2.

SCIFI.com also had record highs. Since measurement began in 2006, Sanctuary is the best performance online for any SCI FI series debut in all key metrics. Sanctuary's web performance boosted SCIFI.com to 1.2 million page views, 208,000 uniques, and 287,000 video streams on Friday, October 3, 2008.

Sanctuary follows the adventures of the beautiful, enigmatic and always surprising Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a brilliant scientist who holds the secrets of a clandestine population — a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans. 2008 Fall Preview: Part I

While it wasn't a fun year, it was an important year for television, which kicked off with a devastating writers' strike that killed shows, affected storylines and reminded the studios that writers have the power to bring Hollywood to a grinding halt. Beyond that, the Internet continued to play an important role by offering episodes online and creating original content that has its own entertainment value, including comic books and Web series that added to the mythology of a show.

While we lost a couple important shows (The 4400, The Dead Zone), there were also some series that never really clicked with audiences (Cavemen, Bionic Woman) and those that could have used more time to reach their potential (Moonlight, New Amsterdam). Jericho proved that while fans may have the power to resurrect a series, they can't always gather the necessary viewers to keep that series on the air.

Fall still remains the prime landscape when it comes to launching new shows. And while cable prefers to launch during other seasons, some of the bigger cable outlets felt comfortable going up against the big networks this fall with series like HBO's True Blood and SCI FI's Sanctuary. The other big development had to do with the resurrection of syndication for scripted drama, thanks to Legend of the Seeker.

One of the main trends in new shows has to be the continued use of a sci-fi or fantasy element in otherwise mainstream shows (The Ex List, My Own Worst Enemy). This blurring of what is sci-fi or fantasy and what is mainstream continues to become increasingly acceptable to the mainstream audience.

However, the most notable trend this season involves where the new series ideas are coming from. Most of the new shows are based on foreign television series (Eleventh Hour, Life on Mars, The Ex List), novel series (True Blood, Legend of the Seeker) or a past television show (Knight Rider). Only four scripted series offer original material (Fringe, My Own Worst Enemy, Valentine). We'll throw Sanctuary in the original category even though it started life as a Web series, since the original creative team is still behind the series.

And, as always, irony plays a part this year. Considering it takes years to get a series on the air, how odd that we end up with two shows about cutting-edge science gone wrong (Fringe, Eleventh Hour) in the same year. Or shows about organizations that download personalities into people so they become more effective spies, only to have the personalities become aware that they are not who they think they are (My Own Worst Enemy and Joss Whedon's midseason entry, Dollhouse).

All in all, it seems like a good season with enough variety, even among the similarly themed shows, to give viewers something to sink their teeth into. And better yet, when we add these new series to the continuing shows (Stargate Atlantis, Primeval) and the returning shows (Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Terminator, Smallville), it adds up to a great fall season where our biggest issue will be "How do we find the time to watch it all?" And that's not a bad problem to have.

New Shows

Sanctuary

SCI FI, Fridays, 9 p.m. ET/PT
Premieres Oct. 3

Sanctuary is billed by SCI FI as the first television series to feature live actors against primarily virtual sets, along the lines of 300 and Sin City. While it began life as an eight-episode Web series, the television show features a two-hour premiere that starts at the beginning of the story. While investigating a murder case, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) begins to suspect the explanation offered at a murder scene. Will soon discovers that his suspicions are right. When a woman named Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) approaches him, she takes Will to a place she calls the Sanctuary and tells him an amazing tale. According to Magnus, the world is filled with Abnormals, fantastic creatures that are the stuff of fairy-tale books and incredible legends. The world needs to be protected from some of them, while others need to be protected from the world. Magnus has made it her mission to find and study these creatures, and to offer them sanctuary if they want it. She is joined on her mission by her fearless daughter, Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), a loyal butler who looks a lot like Bigfoot and their technical wizard, Henry. As Will learns more about Magnus' world and her nemesis, John Druitt, he must decide if he can "dare to believe in the unbelievable." Sanctuary is executive-produced by Tapping, creator Damian Kindler, Martin Wood and Sam Egan.

The Outlook: SCI FI's big new sci-fi entry, Sanctuary, offers to put Amanda Tapping back in action in a very different role than that of Stargate's Col. Samantha Carter, and that's a good thing. Beyond that, it's dripping with mythology and has loads of action and extremely cool visuals, not to mention some nicely drawn characters. Along with Fringe, Sanctuary has more of a fully realized world than any of the other fall offerings. Taking up residence on Friday nights, the series should be an excellent match for Stargate Atlantis. With 13 episodes ordered, look for Sanctuary to do very well for SCI FI.

Sanctuary Bridges Real, Fantasy

Damian Kindler, creator and executive producer of SCI FI Channel's upcoming supernatural series Sanctuary, told SCI FI Wire that he strove to make something that bridged the real and fantastical, with a graphic-novel style that hasn't been seen before.

"I felt there was definitely room for something that bridged the gap between very real ... drama shows on the edge, like The X-Files--which took drama to a new place and said, 'Oh, we can make dramas compelling and character-based, but with a very strange tone to them'--and ... the all-out fantasy stuff, like Heroes," Kindler said in an interview at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly
Hills, Calif., over the weekend.

Kindler, a former writer on Stargate SG-1, added: "I feel like Sanctuary has the ability to be like a really cool graphic novel you've never seen yet. ... It's got [a] graphic-novel feel and look and tone and attitude and visuals, but you've never seen it before. It's not like, 'Oh, they did a crap job at adapting it.' It's not
adapted from anything."

...Sanctuary, which is also executive-produced by [Amanda] Tapping, Martin Wood and Sam Egan, is shooting 13 episodes; it debuts on SCI FI in the fall.

This time it's with Sanctuary, a series that is pioneering some new techniques for television production. Tapping plays "Dr. Helen Magnus," who "has dedicated her life to tracking abnormals, exotic creatures that hide among us. Aided in her mission are her fearless daughter Ashley, her new recruit, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman."

Although Tapping has said she'll likely play Samantha Carter in some iteration of Stargate in the future, she talked about what it was like to leave her regular role behind. "It's like leaving home. I used this analogy earlier today. It's like you have the option of—and I did have the option of going to a community college and staying in my parents' house, i.e., the Stargate franchise or traveling across the country and getting a dorm room and going to a different university, which is
what I've chosen to do. I've just chosen really weird roommates."

From Medical Examiner to Master of Science Fiction...to his latest show for SCI FI Channel

To writer and producer Sam Egan, it sometimes feels like he has been in Hollywood since prehistoric times. It hasn't been quite that long, but his resume is substantial enough to demonstrate a career that spans more than four decades.

In 1971 he graduated from the University of California (Berkeley) Graduate School of Journalism. Not long after that he was working in television. His subsequent credits in that medium include the series Quincy M.E., The Incredible Hulk, The Fall Guy, Automan, Cover Up, Snoops, Manimal, Second Noah, The Outer Limits, Northern Exposure, Stargate SG-1, Jeremiah and Masters of Science Fiction. While he was working on them, several of these shows received awards and nominations (particularly The Outer Limits, which received nods for Emmy, Saturn, Gemini and Leo Awards). He has also occasionally worked in features and written articles for "Rolling Stone", as well as edited the arts magazine "The Every Other Weekly".

Throughout his long career, Egan has lost none of his creative enthusiasm and it seems like he has always been ready to embrace something new. Currently he is working on the Vancouver-shot series Sanctuary, which makes the leap from the Internet to the SCI FI Channel later this year. Egan has joined a production team that includes Stargate alumni Damian Kindler, Martin Wood and Amanda Tapping. It seems like the perfect job for a man who has an impressive pedigree in genre television and an interest in new modes of media delivery.

CinemaSpy recently had the opportunity to catch up with Egan in Vancouver and discuss his career, his work on Sanctuary and his thoughts on what the future holds for visual entertainment.



A brief excerpt:

Michael: How did you get involved with Sanctuary?

Sam Egan: "Well I was a bit of a latecomer to the project because it had already had a presence on the Web for some time and had really made a mark and had become quite a popular Web presence. It came to the attention of the SCI FI Channel in the States and TMN [The Movie Network] and a couple of other networks in Canada. When the prospect was raised for taking the show from a Web product to a television series, I was flattered to be approached by the creative team that had been nurturing the show for the past year or so, Damian Kindler and Amanda Tapping and Martin Wood, as well as Mark Stern at the SCI FI Channel, who was Vice President over there and someone I go way back with from my Outer Limits days, and I just immediately gravitated to the project. I'm a huge fan of Amanda Tapping and have been for some time. And the concept I thought was so strong and the execution — even on the Web — was really, really powerful and showed a huge amount of financial commitment, which I felt was great. So they had me at, 'Hello,' basically."

Michael: Can you give us some idea of the ways in which the new series will be different from the series that was originally put onto the Internet?

Sam Egan: "Well there are certainly going to be significant overlaps and anyone who has seen the original eight webisodes will be familiar with what they see in the series. Certainly the concept is the same. I should say, though, that we have really sort of wiped the slate clean and said, 'What is the best television show we could make based on this underlying material?' So virtually everything, and I use the word advisedly, is being reshot. While we have some elements that are straight out of the original episodes, for the most part everything has been reinvented and honed and fashioned and tweaked for the series. So certainly fans of the Web series will be very comfortable and already have their feet wet in terms of getting to know the world of Sanctuary, [but] I think there'll be plot surprises and a lot of new storytelling elements that will completely draw them in and expand on initial themes and characters and storytelling that was first shown to them on the Web. For people who liked the Web series, they're going to have their mind's blown by the television series. Not that there may be not be a diehard fan or two who says, 'Wait a minute, why did you change this? This worked perfectly in the webisodes?' But that's one of the joys of with - working for, I should say — the sci-fi community because they are such devotees to what they do love and they're never shy about expressing their opinions. Frankly, I love that about the sci-fi audiences, and it always fun to read the blogs and meet them at conventions. Fanbases are something we really treasure and we think we can really expand upon the fans that we've already accrued through the Web series."

The Movie Network and Movie Central commission cutting-edge new original drama series Sanctuary



TORONTO, Feb. 4 /CNW/ - Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (western Canada) have commissioned 13-episodes of one of the first television series ever to be conceived from an Internet-based concept. Initially developed as eight broadcast-quality webisodes from the creative talent behind Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, Sanctuary is an original drama series that is also the first to be shot entirely on green screen.

Commissioned by and airing on The Movie Network and Movie Central, the series has also been green lit by the SCI FI Channel in the U.S. which will broadcast the series day and date with the Canadian broadcasters in fall 2008.

Using next-generation visual effects through 3-D green-screen technology, the series is set in a mysterious and supernatural world and follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) and her fearless and somewhat reckless daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), as they study and try to help the strange, terrifying and monstrous creatures that populate their world.
