SG-1 novel trilogy promises season-arc event

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 (PRODUCTS)

Author Steven Savile talks about next year's big Stargate novel series.

A brief excerpt:

Swedish based author Steven Savile has exploded onto the publishing scene the last few years with dozens of works set in the worlds of Doctor Who, Warhammer, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Torchwood, and his own universes. He has now joined Fandemonium to pen a trilogy of Stargate SG-1 novels set in the middle of Season Five.

GateWorld caught up with Steven to ask him about how the novel deal came about.
"It was an interesting time for me personally," the author said. "I'd just finished writing the Primeval novel and come to the realization that I had said everything I had to say about vampires [the Black Library Vampire Wars series] and had no interest in writing my fifth vampire novel in three years. You get a little worried about repeating yourself -- and there's only so many ways to suck neck, after all! Then I heard that Sally Malcolm was looking for new writers for the SG-1 and Atlantis lines. A few e-mails later we were fast friends and a huge idea was spawning..."

...Stay tuned to GateWorld for our exclusive interview with Steven Savile when the first book in the trilogy is published in early 2009. Learn more about Fandemonium's series of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis novels in GateWorld's Books section, and visit Savile online now at his Web site.

Pushing the dog and finishing McKay

Written by dgeek

Sunday, 31 August 2008 18:08

Greetings strangers!

...Weird shooting the last few episodes of Atlantis, I must say. Cooper's giant episode "Vegas" is going to keep me busy all weekend with the brain stomping amount of McKay dialogue next week...I'm not going to miss that aspect of things...then again, maybe I will! Next up, we're on to the 100th and last episode followed by a fancy 100th episode party that is now serving as the final wrap bash.

I'm getting tons of email with well-wishes and reactions to the cancellation and I really appreciate your kindness and enthusiasm for what we do and did here at Atlantis. Obviously I'm all for you letting me know, but make sure you do the same to MGM, FOX, SciFi, and any channel you've been watching us on...they really need to know how much you want to see McKay...I mean Atlantis...back on TV!

No word on the Atlantis movie yet, but I imagine info will trickle in once the writing department is finished with season five.

MGM/FOX has just let us know that they've decided to hold off on an international release for "A Dog's Breakfast" until February 2009...ARRGH! We've been pushed so many times and heard so many conflicting things now that we're finding it hard to get that excited.

So for the record, the "official word" is that "A Dog's Breakfast" will now be released in the following markets to tie in with the release of season five of ATLANTIS. You should be able to get the film in Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, The UK, and Australia at the same time you're picking up your last twenty episodes of Atlantis...

lots of love

August 31, 2008: The Blue Screen of Death, A Horrific Crime and the Likely Suspects, The Weird Food Purchase of the Day - Guest Edition

I would seem my laptop is not long for this world. Twice, yesterday, I fell victim to the blue screen of death. One second, I'm copy and pasting the day's blog entry into the wordpress window and, the next, my computer is rebooting. I ended up spending most of last night watching Mad Men while I backed up two year's worth of blog entries, scripts, pics, videos, and contacts. It was while I was going through
my photo archive that I discovered a whack o' Whispers snaps I was holding back on, some of which I've posted today, plenty more of which I'll be posting in the days ahead.

**snippage**

And another reminder that if you read The Church of Dead Girls and have a question for author Stephen Dobyns, let's seem 'em. Allie, this means you!

Today's video: The return of The Weird Food Purchase of the Day. In this installment, guest eater Carl Binder samples ox-tail.

Mailbag catch-up:

GrapesofWraith writes: "A quick question - do the stairs at the end of the video lead up to the production offices, or are they in a different building?"
Answer: Yes, they do. The stairs let out onto a corridor. Take a left, and it will take you down past accounting to the art department. Take a right and you'll hit a door (see the production offices walk-thru vid).

Translation: If you're looking to get a question answered, post them here instead of sending me an email.

Ben writes: "And also where do we sit in terms of getting another SG1 movie?"
Answer: If all goes as planned, we should be filming both the SGA movie and the third SG-1 around the same time next year.

PG15 writes: "Good to know we'll get to see the SGC one last time before the Atlantis series…*sniff*…finishes. Does that mean we'll see Walter too?"
Answer: Yes, Walter will put in an appearance before the series ends.

NIMBUS writes: "I'm wondering why the Destiny crew won't be able to land on the new planet and use its Stargate to send a rescue team to a previously visited planet?"
Answer: I can't wait to find out the answer myself.

Stargate SG-1 - Richard Dean Anderson Web Site Updates Aug 31 '08

From a Richard Dean Anderson website e-mail announcement:

Updates at RDAnderson.com:

Two more appendices have been added to the Stargate SG-1 Lexicon. In addition to the Goa'uld Dictionary, you'll now also find an Unas Dictionary.

I have also added what is perhaps one of the most fun sections of the
Lexicon - an index to many of the cameo appearances that have been made on the show.

I have begun working on a summary of the Gatecon weekend, and I will be adding to the Updates and Archives sections soon, probably in segments as they are completed. As with the Avalon [convention] summary, I welcome contributions of photos from other fans who were there. If you have some outstanding photos that you'd like to offer to the site, I'm accepting donations. :) You can reach me at: kate100 @ optonline. net (no spaces)

It was a fabulous and very busy weekend, and more updates will be coming as I slowly return to reality.

Thanks for visiting!

Stargate SG-1 - Stargate Planet: Vena Sood Interview

From Stargate Planet:

(Please follow one of the links for the complete interview.)

GERMAN

ENGLISH

A brief excerpt:

Interview with Veena Soot (08/2008)

Veena Sood was born in Nairobi, Kenia. She's of East Indian descent and immigrated to Canada with her family. She has dual citizenship to Canada and the UK. In Canada, she's based in Vancouver and we're grateful that she's taking some time off her busy schedule to answer a few career related questions for our German website visitors.

S-P.de: In the last episode of Stargate SG-1's season 6 ("Full Circle") you played an Abydonian woman; in 2006 in the episode "Stronghold", you played the character of "Dr. Kelly". How did you prepare for these characters and what could you tell us regarding the shooting of your scenes of these two episodes?
VS: The Abydonian episode was fun because we were playing people from another world. So it was nice to be in different types of wardrobe, and inhabit a new world. For "Dr. Kelly" I basically had to be a straightforward Dr. A part I've done many other times in film and TV!

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - The SciFi World: Josh Friedman & Lena Headey interview

At The SciFi World:

Josh Friedman & Lena Headey interview

Josh Friedman is an American screenwriter best known as the writer of the 2005 film adaptation of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds. Friedman also publishes the blog "I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing". He is now executive producer and writer on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Lena Headey is a British actress who is best known for her appearances in The Brothers Grimm (2005), Possession (2002), and 300 (2006), and playing Sarah Connor in
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

A full transcription of the press conference call from August 28th [at the link above].

A brief excerpt:

Question: Once the premiere airs, the water cooler conversation’s going to be about the first appearance of the liquid terminator, did you end up playing that a little bit sooner than you had ever hoped, having that character appear, and are we at a state in technology where it’s cost efficient for you to try it out on a regular basis?
Josh Friedman: Did we try it out earlier than we wanted to? No. I mean, I think it’s exactly when we wanted to. It sort of was serendipitous. We were working on this character and wanted to introduce somebody who was more of an antagonist, and I didn’t want to do just the basic evil corporate type, so it was a natural progression, and it’s done. It’s expensive to do, but it’s not necessarily anymore expensive to do than an endoskeleton. I mean, morphing technology and GI is something that’s been kind of streamline, I think, in terms of cost over the years since it was first done. It’s still time consuming. It’s more just sort of, it’s just the art of it, just sort of getting it right in terms of the rates of change and kind of what it looks like and the texturing. We went back and forth quite a bit in this first episode because it was the first time that we’d done it.

Question: In the beginning, you talked about having somewhere to go with the character, so could you talk about what the gradual progression Sarah is on this year will be?
Lena Headey: It’s been an interesting season. I feel that Sarah has taken a, kind of a backseat in terms of being proactive and taking care of business. I think that we’re going to see a lot more of John taking control and then becoming, making steps towards becoming the man he has to be to take on his tasks. And I think this season for Sarah is kind of her losing slight control over everything pretty much, and my feeling is that I think there’s a slow madness sort of happening in her because she feels that everything’s kind of out of reach right now.

August 30, 2008: Actress Sharon Taylor Answers Your Questions and We Complete Our Tour of Stage 5.

With the end of production on Stargate Atlantis less than a month away, I'm going to do my best to introduce you all to some of the amazing unsung heroes who have worked very hard behind the scenes these many years. They may not get the all-expenses-paid invites to the overseas conventions but that doesn't mean that their contribution to the success of the show was no less important than the likes of the series regulars, writers, or producers. Over the past couple of months, you got to know the likes of VFX Supervisor Mark Savela, Director of Photography Jim Menard. In the coming days, it'll be Props Master Evil Kenny Gibbs and Director Andy Mikita. Among the many others on my "to pester" list: Composer Joel Goldsmith, Stunt Coordinator James Bam Bam Bamford, Director Will Waring, Playback Supervisor Krista McLean, SPFX Supervisor Wray Douglas, Costume Designer Valerie Halverson, Production Designer James Robbins, and many others. Can't promise they'll all have the time to drop by, but it doesn't hurt to ask - or apply extreme pressure if they prove reluctant (Yes, I'm talking about you, Will.).

As for today, I'm happy to turn this blog over to actress Sharon Taylor who went from a "blink and you'll miss her" appearance as a replicator in Progeny to a recurring role as gate technician Amelia Banks...

SG-1 cast remembers Davis

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30 (ACTORS)

Happy memories of late actor Don S. Davis were shared at Creation Entertainment's Chicago Stargate convention.

A brief excerpt:

Cast and crew of both Stargate series, along with millions of fans worldwide, were shocked to learn of the passing of veteran actor Don S. Davis earlier this summer. The man who brought to life the character of General George Hammond clearly had an effect on the people who met him -- from cast members who worked alongside him for years to people whose lives he touched just in passing.

Creation Entertainment's Official Stargate convention, held August 22-24 at Chicago's Wyndham O'Hare hotel, was dedicated to the actor's memory. Davis had originally been scheduled to be a guest there prior to his untimely passing. Attendees of the con who had met Davis were offered a chance to take the stage themselves briefly Friday afternoon to share their memories of the late actor. Many of the attending celebrities also mentioned him during their time on-stage...

Stick with GateWorld for more updates from Creation's Chicago event in the days to come! Interviews with Alexis Cruz, Tony Amendola and a brand-new sit-down with Michael Shanks are coming soon. And keep it locked to GateWorld as we bring you more reactions from Atlantis cast members on the cancellation of the series.

Opening a black hole on 'Stargate Atlantis'

Sci Fi Channel cancels swashbuckling spinoff, but a new series, 'Universe,' is on the event horizon in 2009.

By David Tischman, Special to The Times

August 31, 2008

THE Sci Fi Channel canceled "Stargate Atlantis" this month, less than halfway through its fifth season. And indeed, the episodes have been disappointing so far, with no new plot twists to enhance the show's wormhole-jumping science fiction mythology. The big cast change -- adding "Star Trek: Voyager's" Robert Picardo as the city's new administrator -- hit with all the power of a phaser set on Blah.

But science fiction fans are loyal, even when our heroes are treading water -- the box office receipts for "Revenge of the Sith" prove that -- and the next batch of episodes in what is now "Atlantis' " final season do get better. Much better. In fact, the midseason two-part finale (airing at the end of September), features a very smart (very big) surprise...

Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa), Lt. Col. John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan) and Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) from 'The Queen,' scheduled to air Friday, Sept. 12 at 10pm on the SciFi Channel.

...Simply put, "Stargate Atlantis" is the best comic book television we have; not as well written as "Heroes," but with more swashbuckling fun -- and with the American can-do attitude of a space-faring "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (an artifact that could possibly be found in the Pegasus Galaxy).

The new episodes of "Atlantis" continue to air until the end of 2008, with a finale set for the series' 100th episode. The show will live on in syndication, and in original DVD movies (as "SG-1" has done successfully). A new "Stargate" series, "Stargate Universe," with new characters, has been announced, and is set to premiere sometime in 2009.

In that new series, the cast is trapped on a ship at the edge of the galaxy, with no way to get back to Earth. That sounds a lot like "Star Trek: Voyager" -- the least popular of all the "Star Trek" spin-offs -- which spent seven seasons replaying the tragic notion that the crew was lost in space, unable to reach home. But sci-fi fans know how that turned out. Just ask Robert Picardo.

Stargate Atlantis' 'Inquisition' is scheduled to air Friday, October 24 at its new time, 9pm, on the SciFi Channel (US).

Scene from the big Ronon vs. house cat battle sequence in episode #20.

We're #1! Well, we were anyway. The #1 pirated show on BitTorrent last week, beating out the likes of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, Psych, and Mad Men, and up from #6 the previous week. No actual hard numbers provided in the report, but one can't help but wonder whether all those illegal downloads have been hurting the show's ratings. The 30% bump Atlantis receives from the Live+7 numbers suggests that our viewers are tech-savvy (not all that surprising considering they are SF fans) and make use of alternate viewing resources such as Tivo, DVR, iTunes and BitTorrent. Exactly how this affected the show's ratings is debatable and, at this point, of little consequence, but I just thought I'd mention it.

Meanwhile, we've still got a show to produce. Identity is shooting, Enemy at the Gate is prepping, and various cuts and mixes abound...
