Stargate Universe - Show Patrol: Brian J. Smith of 'SGU' 'gates to 'Orient Express'

At Chicago Now's Show Patrol (Chicago, IL):

Brian J. Smith of 'SGU' 'gates to 'Orient Express'

by Curt Wagner on 07.09.10

Brian J. Smith planned to relax in New York City after he finished filming the first season of "Stargate Universe" last winter.

Before he knew it, he had booked passage on the Orient Express. Well, actually he landed a part in the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express," which premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday on PBS (WTTW in Chicago).
"It came completely out of the blue," Smith told me this week during a break in shooting S2 of "SGU" in Vancouver. "I think I was in New York for like five days when my agent called ... I was really intrigued by the character."

Smith plays Hector MacQueen, the multi-lingual assistant to hateful American businessman. They board the Orient Express and cross paths with the famed detective Hercule Poirot--and with murder. (Of course I'm not going to tell you any more about it!)

PBS: Video - 'Murder on the Orient Express' Airs Sunday July 11 at 9pm

Airing Sunday, July 11 at 9pm on PBS, a new TV adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express."

From PBS:

On his way to Istanbul, Hercule Poirot is called back to London for a case, and finds transport via the opulent Orient Express train. An ornery American businessman, Samuel Ratchett, interrupts Poirot's luxurious trip with a cryptic plea for help — he's seeking penance, but may be murdered in the meantime. When the train is sidelined by a snowdrift and Ratchett is found dead, Poirot becomes embroiled in one of the most fiendish cases of his career. The suspects are numerous and colorful — an erudite Russian princess, an English colonel, a pushy American matron and a devout Swedish missionary among others. The evidence suggests a shadowy assassin may have boarded the train during a stop in order to commit the murder, but is there an unforgivable evil even closer at hand? Based on the novel by Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express features David Suchet as Hercule Poirot and an all-star supporting cast including Eileen Atkins (Cranford), Toby Jones (The Old Curiosity Shop), Barbara Hershey, Hugh Bonneville (Miss Austen Regrets), David Morrissey (Sense and Sensibility), and Stargate Universe's Brian J. Smith.

For more information on the movie's characters please go to this link at PBS.

Leader In Training

Photobucket

by Chad Colvin
Thursday - July 1, 2010

Now well into his second year of filming, Stargate Universe actor Brian J. Smith has brought a definite sense of passion and intensity to his character, Lt. Matthew Scott. He’s a leader in training, a young officer who is called upon to protect the crew of the Destiny and to serve as an example of the best that the ship’s military contingent can be — even (and especially) in the midst of crisis.

GateWorld recently chatted with Brian at the official Stargate convention in Vancouver, hosted by Creation Entertainment. We discussed such topics as fandom and Internet anonymity, Matt’s relationship with Chloe, his character’s potential for growth, and the climactic SGU season ender.

Season Two of SGU is now filming and will premiere this October! Season 1.0 is available on DVD and Blu-ray, and Season 1.5 arrives in July.

A brief excerpt:

GW: His loyalties are never divided; he’s clearly on Young’s side. But he’s still willing to give that certain amount of whatever to Rush in order — because he feels like Rush is the key to getting home.
BS: Scott is an emotional leader. I think his leadership style is much more emotional, so he’s much more bound to be loyal. He may also be more impulsive in a way, tend to get a little more hot-headed.
Scott comes upon the element his crew needs to survive.

But he’s learning. And even seeing where they’re taking him in the second season is really, really exciting, because there’s some qualities that are coming out in him that I really, really like and I’m glad to see explored. Because right now, him and Greer — they get the dirty work done for Young. Young makes the decision and Scott and Greer [execute it], along with the rest of the military personnel. It’s like Young is the director and Greer and Scott are the assistant directors. We’re the ones that go out and try to make the vision a reality.

So it’s going to be interesting to see if Scott gets to a place where decisions that he makes start to affect storylines, and if he’s able to change the course of an episode or how things turn out. That’ll be exciting to see...

Brian J Smith on what's in store for Stargate Universe and Lt Matthew Scott

By David Bentley on May 26, 10

Photobucket

BRIAN J SMITH is best known for his role as Lt Matthew Scott in Stargate Universe, which airs on Tuesday nights at 8pm on Sky1.

The actor, who also starred in the 2005 film Hate Crime, was born on October 12, 1981 in Dallas, Texas.

So what drew him to Stargate Universe and what he can tell us about what's coming up, for the show in general and for his character?

Here he opens a stargate into the show's success and where it may be headed...

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

WAS IT THIS MORE DRAMATIC APPROACH THAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE ROLE?
BJS: "Yes, for sure, if I'm going to wake up at 5am in the morning and go to set and really, really be invested there's got to be something that interests me as an actor. And I don't know if I would be interested in a kind of a light-comedy type show. Even if it paid really well, I don't know if that would keep me going, I would get bored. This show, it's very, very challenging, the stakes are always very high, and that to me is very attractive and there's something about the character that is really interesting to me and really, really moves me and has from day one. And I'm certainly impressed to see where they're going with the characte
r and certainly curious to see what's going to happen later on this year."
