THE DAILY REVIEW

Cult Alert: Battlestar finale

By Matt Roush March 20, 2009

Before screening tonight’s tremendously satisfying, super-sized, overstuffed Battlestar Galactica finale (9/8c, Sci Fi) to a select audience earlier this week, executive producer/writer Ron Moore made everyone in the theater raise their hand and take a solemn (well, kinda) pledge not to reveal anything that happens in these last eventful two hours.

No problem. I’d sooner be blown out of an airlock than spoil how things end for these tormented space warriors and the marvelous old dying old ship that’s carrying them to their destiny. Suffice it to say that the finale is a fabulous payoff in every way imaginable. And then some. And then some more. (Therein lies the problem.) In my row alone, there were outbreaks of gasps, laughs, cheers and tears before it was all over.

The best news: The battle scenes are genuinely spectacular, as Galactica’s volunteer crew of humans and Cylons takes on one last mission against Cavil’s rebel Cylon forces: the rescue of human/Cylon hybrid child Hera. The action is thrilling, and the most pivotal twist in the ultimate showdown is as surprising as it is cathartic ...

SCI FI president Dave Howe answers your Syfy questions

by SCI FI Wire Staff
ON 03/20/09

Our story "SCI FI Channel to become Syfy" generated more than 1,000 comments from readers, including a lot of questions about the change. So we asked SCI FI president Dave Howe if he'd like to answer them on SCI FI Wire, and following is what he had to say.

A brief excerpt:

... Why do you hate your core fan base? Don't you know we helped make your network a success? Why don't you want to be associated with us anymore?
Howe: This is a total misperception, and none of us at the channel have ever said this. As I've tried to stress in the first question, we love the sci-fi genre, and we love our passionate fans. And that's why we continue to create shows we hope you'll enjoy. And it's why we're always at Comic-Con every year, bringing all of our stars to meet the fans and speak on panels.

It's worth repeating what I said in the press release for our brand evolution: "While continuing to embrace our legacy and our core audience, we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own that invites more people in and reflects our broader range of programming."

And we totally mean it. We've embraced our core audience for 16 years, and we'll continue to do so. And, what's more, we want to invite more and more people to the party so that they become fans of the genre we all love. We think shows like Battlestar Galactica can and should appeal to a wide audience of both core fans and new viewers alike, an idea that was embraced by Star Wars more than 30 years ago and that continues with shows such as Lost and Heroes today. Our strategy is to be more inclusive, to share great sci-fi shows with more people ...

Today's News: Our Take

Tonight's TV Hot List for Friday, March 20, 2009

Mar 20, 2009

Battlestar Galactica

9 pm/ET SCI FI

While many shows lose their viewership and often get yanked off the air without the benefit of a scripted finale, there are a few that retain their audiences until they get to say a proper good-bye to their fans. Closure is nice, but this is frakking Battlestar Galactica we're talking about! The bell tolls for the series after four seasons with a two-hour episode, in which Adama and Co. launch a desperate recovery mission for Hera. Keep the tissues handy.
