Five questions with Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly of Syfy's 'Warehouse 13'

Wednesday, Jun. 30, 2010

by David Martindale

Now that Eddie McClintock, one of the stars of Syfy's Warehouse 13, has experienced what it's like to have a hit TV show, he doesn't want the feeling to go away. "How about a 15-year run?" he asks. "I think there are enough story possibilities to keep us going that long." McClintock stars as Secret Service Agent Pete Lattimer alongside Joanne Kelly as Agent Myka Bering. It's their job to chase down cursed, haunted and bad-juju artifacts and to keep them locked away in a top-secret facility in South Dakota. Season 2 of Warehouse 13, the highest-rated series in Syfy history, begins at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

A brief excerpt:

How gratifying is it that the show has become the network's biggest series ever?
Kelly: You create these things in a bubble. You have no idea if people will be welcoming or if they'll enjoy it. So it's an incredibly validating feeling to have people respond the way they did.

McClintock: This was my 10th pilot. People kept telling me not to give up. Not that I ever entertained the notion of quitting, because I don't know what else I would do. But it's great to finally get one that made it. I can't believe how lucky I am.

Upping the Ante In Stargate Universe Season Two

SFXCLUSIVE The show's producers tease where they'll be taking the story on the characters in the second season.

Stargate's Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper

Things reached a nadir of bleakness by the end of the first season of Stargate Universe with the interstellar thugs known as the Lucien Alliance taking over our heroes' ship by extreme force, leaving the good guys quite literally on their knees, and a defiant Colonel Young dealing with the news that ex-lover TJ (who was carrying their child) lay dying elsewhere on the ship. But that could all be a afternoon in the park compared to what the producers have lined up for season two, they reveal in an exclusive interview in SFX198.
Long-running Stargate stalwart Brad Wright promises that escaping from the Alliance is going to be a messy business. "When you try to adopt a more realistic tone, where frankly we don't win every time, then there have to be real world repercussions like death and injury and loss. You can dig deeper into characters and the deeper you dig the repercussions can get bigger. We are going to some places with these characters, and already have really, that we would never go with the heroes of our other series..."

For more of season two news, including some of the production team’s plans for new baddie, Simeon, played by Heroes’ Robert Knepper, check out the full interview in SFX198.

PASADENA, Calif. - Actor Saul Rubinek, who plays the obsessed techhie on Syfy's "Warehouse 13," confesses he shares his character's mania.
"He's a man who's been at the warehouse for 30 years and has no wife and no kids and has a love-hate relationship and is married and obsessed with this place. He left Juilliard as a concert pianist and became really good at cryptology and got recruited and never turned back, and maybe wishes he did," he explains in the lounge of a hotel here.

"Where I relate is I've been married 20 years this coming September. I have a daughter in college. My son is just finishing his first year of high school. And I do have a life - thank God I have a life - but I might NOT have..."

The Gates - TV Guide Online: Janina Gavankar Interview

At TV Guide Online:

(Please follow the link for the complete interview.)

Gates Star: Next Episode Will Be "More Dark and Intense"

Jun 24, 2010
by Gina DiNunno

Janina Gavankar from Stargate Atlantis' "Whispers."

After last week's premiere of ABC's The Gates, it's clear that there's more to the show's upscale community than white picket fences and soccer moms. There's the high school teen who needs to keep his anger in check so he doesn't accidentally turn into a werewolf. Then there are the witches who work their magic under the guise of holistic remedy makers. And let's not forget the married vampire couple, the Radcliffes, who've already drained and dumped one unfortunate contractor.

Could there be even more otherworldly residents lurking in the picture-perfect neighborhood? Turns out Deputy Leigh Turner may have also something to hide. Actress Janina Gavankar reveals how things are amped up in the next episode (Sunday, 10/9c), what her character is up to, and why she thinks The Gates is unique from other supernatural shows.

A brief excerpt:

TVGuide.com: With all the supernatural shows out there, what makes The Gates unique?
Gavankar: One of the reasons why this is such an interesting show to me is because we put a very human spin on a supernatural theme. It's a great analogy for the immigrant experience. There's the idea of leaving everything behind and trying to make it and assimilating. These really big universal themes that we play with are human conditions. There really is something in it for everyone. The parents are going through normal parental issues. There's the younger high school element. Puberty sucks and everyone feels that they're different in high school. But that, coupled with having to worry about your hormones because you might have a werewolf flare and turn in the middle of homecoming? That's awkward!

Stargate Atlantis' David Hewlett Reminisces About "Grace Under Pressure"

Photobucket

David Hewlett (Dr. Rodney McKay) and Amanda Tapping (Col. Samantha Carter) in "Grace Under Pressure." Photo copyright of MGM Entertainment.

In the fifth season Stargate SG-1 episode 48 Hours, Dr. Rodney McKay is temporarily assigned to Stargate Command to help Major Samantha Carter find a way to rescue Teal'c, who is trapped inside an active Stargate wormhole. The scientist may be an expert when it comes to Stargate technology, but his limited interpersonal skills coupled with his enormous ego results in him getting on everyone's nerves, not the least of which Carter's.

McKay later expresses his sincerest of apologies to the major in Redemption, and the two cross paths yet again in the Stargate Atlantis episode Grace Under Pressure. Luckily for Carter, she is just a figment of the concussed McKay's mind, but her "presence" turns out to be invaluable as he tries to figure out how to escape from a crashed puddle jumper that is sinking further down into the ocean surrounding Atlantis. Despite his character's dangerous predicament, David Hewlett, who plays McKay, has fond memories of this story.
"This episode stands out the most for me for a number of reasons," says Hewlett. "I mean, number one, I got to work once again with Amanda Tapping [Samantha Carter], which was great. Grace Under Pressure was such a unique experience for me in that, while it might not necessarily be my favorite episode to watch, it was my favorite to shoot because it was just so much McKay. It was like a one-man show. Even when they cut back to the Atlantis base, there were people there hoping that my character was OK," chuckles the actor...

Its being run by GABIT events and is made more special as nobody is taking a fee, and all the proceeds from ticket sales are going directly to “Sanctuary for Kids” the charity set up by Amanda Tapping, Damian Kindler & Jill Bodie, which the show supports throughout the year. It’s being run by GABIT events.

... TLOEG: Regarding your character in Sanctuary, did the producers give you Declan’s back story, do you get to make it up or is it something that was a group effort? Can we expect to see more of Declan’s back story on screen?
RL: When I first met the producers at audition I was given an outline for Declan which informed my characterisation. Since then I’ve been fortunate enough to be given great freedom from the producers to develop Declan who have supported my character decisions as an actor. Back story really is a group effort, partly expressed by the producers but fleshed out in my own mind to inform my own acting decisions.

Sanctuary - SciFi and TV Talk: Christopher Heyerdahl Interview

Sanctuary's Christopher Heyerdahl - The Beast Within

It was over 120 years ago that Montague John Druitt became a suspect in Jack the Ripper's serial killing of eight prostitutes that were carried out in London between August and November 1888. A teacher at Blackheath's boy's school, he was dismissed from his place of employment shortly before committing suicide in November 1888.

Who would have thought that Druitt would resurface, albeit in fictional form, on the hit Sci-Fi TV series Sanctuary. He and his former lover, Dr. Helen Magnus, were part of a group of 19th century scientists called "The Five." Their experiments with pure vampire blood gave each of them an Abnormal power, Druitt's being the ability to teleport. His body was later taken over by a homicidal energy creature that drove him to commit the Jack the Ripper murders.

Photobucket

Druitt made his debut in a series of eight 15-minute Sanctuary webisodes, with veteran stage, feature film and TV actor Christopher Heyerdahl cast in the role. Because this is a character that has lived considerably longer than the ordinary human being, he wanted to try his best to get that as well as several other things across in his performance.
"Whenever you're creating a character for the first time, especially one that you think so highly of after reading the script, your number one concern is making sure you do him justice," says Heyerdahl. "So with John Druitt I started out doing a lot of research into the time period that he came from, and then through the past 150 years that he's spent on this planet and compared it to the nearly five decades that I've been here. It's a perspective that is very particular.

"There are quite a few octogenarians and even older individuals who live in the same building as I do in Vancouver. I spoke with a number of them about how peculiar life is when you've seen so much and in a world that has changed so dramatically, certainly in the last 80 or 90 years. You then try to bring all that into the relationship between Druitt and Magnus [Amanda Tapping], which has experienced an awful lot, too. He knows that she brought their child Ashley [Emilie Ullerup] to term, and in the webisodes he's been searching and searching for her for pretty much 120 years..."

Robert C. Cooper, one of the Stargate franchise’s most veteran writer/producers, is moving on. Cooper will leave Stargate next month, fellow SGU executive producer Joseph Mallozzi announced on his blog.
“I’m not leaving completely, actually — just stepping back to more of a consulting role for the end of this season,” Cooper told GateWorld. “However, my credit will remain Executive Producer. We’ve already developed most of Season Two and I feel very confident leaving the show in good hands.”

Cooper’s final contribution to the stalwart franchise will be a stage panel appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, promoting the second season of Stargate Universe (now in production). He also tells GateWorld that he’ll be writing one more episode for late Season Two...

...Stay tuned to GateWorld for more exclusive comments straight from Rob Cooper on his decision to step back from the show, and just what his responsibilities will be for the remainder of Season Two’s production.

We’d like to thank Rob Cooper for his part in more than a decade of great television, and wish him Godspeed in his next endeavor!

Fancast has learned exclusively that the star of yes, ‘MacGyver,’ as well as ‘Stargate SG-1‘ will appear on at least five episodes of the fall series, which stars the totally gorgeous Sarah Shahi (’Life’) as Kate Reed, a top-flight litigator who leaves her firm to become a mediator...

The Farewell Tour! Back On Top! Janina’s New Music Vid!

Stargate Universe creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper

A short and early blog entry today as I’m heading off to the first stop in Robert C. Cooper’s farewell victory tour. ”What’s that?” you say. You didn’t know he was leaving? Well, yes. Sad but true. His appearance at this year’s Comic Con panel will mark his final Stargate-related contribution, so if you happen to be in the San Diego area in late July, make sure to say goodbye and thank him for fourteen years and countless hours of gate-tastic entertainment. But, please – no tears. If you start crying it’ll only be a matter of time before he starts crying as well (the ole softy) and that’ll just embarrass him...

Finally! Office Pics! Yet Another Guest Blogger Announcement! And the Mailbag!

What a difference an idea makes. I’d been spinning my wheels on my latest story, trying to find that elusive through-line that would tie all its narrative elements together – and then, yesterday, I found it. Or, more appropriately, it was presented to me by fellow Exec. Producer Brad Wright. And, just like that, the pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place. Well, more or less. I’m still missing some corner pieces and portions of the sky on the upper left, but I’m in much better shape. Today, I put together a preliminary beat sheet which I’ve started to flesh out. I aim to have a reading document ready for early next week. Have to say, I am very excited about this episode – probably more excited than I’ve been for an episode since Atlantis season 5′s Remnants...

Okay, looks like the guest bloggers are coming up fast and furious. I’ve collected your questions for Jennifer Spence and will be sending them her way this weekend. Next up...

Heather writes: “In my favorite episode “Faith” TJ goes to a river where there is a waterfall. Can you tell me the name of that waterfall?”
Answer: I don’t know whether the waterfall has an actual name, but I do know that it’s located in Widgeon Park, where the episode was shot. According to Carl [Binder], who produced the episode, the waterfall required a bit of a trek to get to – and Alaina, pregnant at the time, was a trooper throughout, making the hike there and back without a peep of protest. Also according to Carl, there are plenty of park rangers in the area who could probably point you in the right direction. Or recover your body if you wander off the trail and happen to encounter one of the many bears that frequent the area.

crayonbaby writes: “Peter DeLuise is back?! Directing possibly?”
Answer: Directing definitely. Episode #11: Deliverance...

Exclusive: Robin Dunne Has Found His 'Sanctuary'

The Syfy series is out on Blu-ray and we chat to one of the stars

By Michael Simpson | Friday, June 18, 2010

Photobucket

Given that Sanctuary is filmed on an ultra-high definition camera, the Vancouver-shot fantasy series seems tailor-made for Blu-ray. It was surprising last year, then, when the First Season came to the home entertainment market only on DVD. Thankfully that has been rectified this week with the release of both Seasons One and Two on BD. Cinema Spy has a full review of those coming up. In the meantime we are marking the occasion with an interview with one of the show's stars, Robin Dunne.

Dunne plays Will Zimmerman, assistant and protégé to monster hunter Dr Helen Magnus (played by Stargate's Amanda Tapping). Magnus runs the sanctuary of the show's title. The unnaturally old but beautiful scientist uses the sanctuary to study and provide a safe have for so-called abnormals. These are mutant beings who might be seen as threatening by 'normal' humanity.

Sanctuary started life as a short Web series. It was popular enough to be picked up by a collection of broadcasters in various countries, including Syfy in the United States and The Movie Network/Movie Central in Canada (later moving to the SPACE Channel). In our chat Dunne discussed what it's like to have been there from the beginning, his character's evolution through the Web series and both seasons that have aired so far (a third is now in production) and why he thinks he has the best job in the world.

Photobucket

A brief excerpt:

CinemaSpy: What are the highlights for Will Zimmerman in Season Two?
Robin Dunne: The two-hour opening is really amazing. We ended on a serious cliffhanger on Season One and that just gets a hell of a lot harder and the stakes just skyrocket. From the get-go Season Two is just a major rollercoaster ride. We do have some amazing episodes. We have a couple of two-handers this season, which are a lot of fun. Amanda Tapping has directed an episode, which is a wonderful episode, and it was a really big treat to work with her as an actor and director. There's nothing that she can't do. Also, stylistically we've done some different stuff [in Season Two]. The shows now look a little different. The scope of the show's going to get a little bigger. And I think because of the stylistic changes the audience is going to get even more of a peek into the show and to see what all the characters are going through all the time. I think definitely it's going to blow your mind.
