Is `Waverly Place' the next `Hannah Montana'?

Wizards and magic and mayhem – yes, please!

Wizards of Waverly Place is full of magic, portals, cauldrons and potions. The Disney Channel show (airing on Family Channel in Canada) centres on a not-so-typical New York City family. By "not-so-typical," what I really mean is the kids possess magical powers.

.. Alex (Selena Gomez), Justin (David Henrie) and Max Russo (Jake T. Austin) are siblings who inherited their magical gifts from their dad Jerry, played by David DeLuise. Their loveable pop helps hone their magic skills in the Magic Lair, as long as they don't use them in public or without supervision. Right, like that would happen.

... Although it's a children's series, parents enjoy Wizards of Waverly Place too. I had a chance to talk with the show's TV dad (who has two daughters in real life) while he took a break from watching the filming of an episode.

... Before I could talk to him about the show, my curiosity got the better of me; I wanted to know what magical power he would want. The goofball takes this seriously and says, "I think I would have to go with flying. Just because I live in L.A. and there's so much traffic. I wouldn't mind flying, and picking up my kids and flying home."

... While in Vancouver with his brother Peter (we've seen him in Supernatural and Stargate SG-1), Peter asked him what he thought of the part. "I was like, `Oh my god, I love it! I would get to be a kooky dad teaching his kids about magic. It's perfect,'" says DeLuise. "And he's like, `I think you answered your question.' I did not know that it was going to be what it is. And, I'm really happy to be a part of it. I have a lot of fun. My days are filled with joy now. It's weird how things happen ..."

.. Wizards of Waverly Place airs weekdays at 7 p.m. ET and weekends at 10:40 a.m. ET on Family Channel.
